Installation Failure

A couple months ago I tried downloading and installing the game. Since the game requires SO MUCH SPACE, because it's poorly put together (uses an initial installation file, that unpacks to multiple package files, plus ANOTHER installation file, then creates the actual game after installation) I had to delete a great deal of things off my Hard Disk. With 8GB free after the download, I deleted the unpacking file, and begin installation.

All four package files were present, and had been extracted properly from the extraction file after the download. I ran a check, which took just as long as the installation, so I had to wait about 3 hours just for it to tell me "Installation Failed" at 99%. The exact message was (and I have a screencap of this): "Failed to create C:\Program Files\Perfect World Entertainment\Perfect World International!"

I have redownloaded this game three times prior to this possibly final attempt.
The first instance of this was a couple months ago, where I spent about 3 days trying to get the game to install properly. Since my friend loves this game (And she normally doesn't get this into games) I tried again just a few hours ago. Before each download I deleted ALL previous files of Perfect World, I deleted as much as I possibly could off of my HD so I would surely have more than enough room for it, and everytime, before the download begins, it tells me I don't have enough space and I should delete more. I cannot delete more, there's nearly 10GB free space, and while I know this isn't much, I'm on an older CPU since my laptop broke, and I can't give anymore space.

What I want to know, is why the requirements are so misleading as to say I only need "2.5GB", when it's telling me 10GB is not enough free space, and why when I have 8GB of free space left for the INSTALLATION ONLY, it fails at 99%? How in the hell, is a 2.5GB file, creating 8GB, and for that matter, why is this game three times bigger than World of Warcraft?

The final install clocks in at 2.54 gigabytes (2,736,125,759 bytes). Most of this space is made up of textures, meshes, models, terrain data, and music. There's really no way to reduce those attributes past the current without reducing the quality of the game's appearance. World of Warcraft, with expansions, takes ~8.7 gigabytes of hard drive space after install, and requires at least 10 gigabytes for a safe installation.

The use of intermediate installers is not unusual. It's not how I would have done things personally; but for a large installer and a bandwidth-limited web server, it's rather understandable.

If your friend is able, try moving entire Perfect World Installation from "C:\Program Files\Perfect World Entertainment" on her computer onto a thumb drive or burnable DVD (or even series of CD-Rs), or across a computer network through the Windows File Sharing to "C:\Program Files\Perfect World Entertainment" on your computer. This is not a supported method, but it does work in many situations.

For Windows XP, Windows will take 1-2GB+ of disk space for itself for virtual memory and swap files.

For Vista, Windows may take 4-8GBs for virtual memory and swap files, depending on a variety of factors.

While you have the game extracting, it will double itself on space, onto your hard drive.

Once the game is extracted, you can delete the zipped file you originally downloaded (like from a torrent) to help make space on your hard drive before you start the install process.

Having less then 12 to 20 GBs of space remaining on your computer hard drive isn't recommend personally by me, because there are so many things that can happen depending on what kind of software you have installed on your computer, your PC specs, etc.

Having 10GB or less is cutting it kind of close.
Do you need help learning about patching the game, installing it, changing antivirus/firewall settings, changing network settings, learn how to use a computer, keeping your PC maintained and more?

Have you tried installing to a different directory, such as C:\Games\Perfect World International

Downloading from the torrent with a robust torrent client like utorrent would help eliminate the possibility of a corrupt download, as it has built-in error checking.

But it sounds more like a directory ownership or installation rights issue, since it's trying to get everything to the right directory. Are there any other user accounts on this system?

It's gotta be an ownership issue. Can you tell me what the Security settings are on your Program Files directory?

If there's a pre-existing Program Files\Perfect World Entertainment, make sure that your copy of the installer is somewhere on the desktop or Documents folder, and delete the Program Files\Perfect World Entertainment folder.
