How to upgrade a water pet?

Have anyone ever tried to upgrade a WATER pet (eg a turtle) or does anyone know how to train a new skill to a WATER pet ? The problem is: I cannot call it on LAND while i'm talking to the trainer.
Does anyone have a hint?
