How to split stacks ?

So whats the trick to breaking a stack of items in your bag. I think I've tried even shift/alt/cntrl click you can think of and have not found a way to say break a stack of 50 coal into 2 say of 30 and 20.

    Hold alt and drag it to a different bag slot. There will be a split dialog. You will see.
