How exactly do you add friends?

I'm curious as to how, if I'm doing it wrong, because so far, it doesn't seem to be working. I've opened up the Friend List thing, and clicked add followed by typing the exact username, and I've also tried the person's character name. In both cases, it said the user can't be found, despite them being online at the time and on the same server. Is there something else I should be doing, or what?

    The character's name must be typed exactly, including any capitalisations etc - is that something you tried?

    Yes, I made quite sure to try them with complete capitalization, and still couldn't manage it for a while. It finally worked, but only seems to work if they're online at the time, otherwise they don't get the message that I had requested to add them to my friends when they go on, which can be limiting as most of my friends live in different time zones.

    It seems to send out a "friend request" that will time out if there isn't a response. Presumably this is some sort of security/privacy measure to ensure you give your permission for someone to know you're around.

    you have to send a request to them, then they have to send a request to you, once you both accept the requests you are added to each others friend list.
