Screen goes black with nvidia 6600 gt

On my wife's comp, Launching up the game, for few seconds i see the login screen and then screen goes black and display adapter dies. Tried several different drivers for this card now and nothing seems to help.

At worst it rebooted the whole comp.

Running out of options.

Directx and drivers are up-to-date. using Win XP sp3.

    Okay managed to get around it to the character creation by minimizing all settings, though it still freezes on char creation if taking too long.

    Ive got the same problem, as soon as i enter character creation screen, my comp reboots. When it reboots, at te first screen i can see "Secondary IDE channel no 80 conductor cable is installed", does this have anything to do with this problem you think?

    Possibilities:
    gpu overheating
    northbridge overheating
    not enough power from the power supply
    motherboard dying (I think this would be probable in your case... but I have a broken ati card that reboots the pc when any 3d app is loaded so who knows)
    bad ram (use memtest86+ or the microsoft test that is supposedly better to check)


    @holywind: if you have an agp ati card use the 7.7 catalyst drivers. uninstall your current ones, run driver sweeper in safe mode, then install in normal mode.
    if you don't have an agp ati card, then see the first part of my post...

    Also... your 80-conductor message from the bios shouldn't cause any big issue but the performance will be lower. I would say to go find or buy a better cable but IDE is dead, everything is SATA nowadays.
