Whats a beta key? and how can I get one?

So im new to this whole closed beta thing. it took me a minute to realize that "Closed" meant "Closed to the public" so then i hear about this thing called the beta key. and the everyone can get them. so whats the deal?

    I think they handed beta keys out in MMORPG.com sometime ago. It's ended now, but people got one from there. and now they're going to select people that registered and give them beta keys also. So.... I guess you'd have to wait for it?

    EDIT: ok so I see they're giving out keys in MMOABC now. you can go there and get a key
