People who butcher the english language, aren't cut out to make a decent mage, imo.

Mages/wizards have the lowest hp among all classes, therefore be prepared to die often for the first 40 or so levels, especially since you will have low physical defense and almost all low-level mobs deal physical damage. Once you obtain your pushback skill, things become much better. Leveling is not a problem if you find the right mobs (magic air/water mobs are best). However, you will struggle with some quests unless you have good non-mage friends.

Mages are extremely equipment dependent. If you have good gear (need money/time commitment), you will be strong. Otherwise, I'd suggest playing an archer if you like damage dealers, or venomancer or priest if you like magic casters.

    Attribute wise, for every level:
a pure mage would +4int, +1str - highest damage, lowest health- probably best at very high levels (90+)
a hybrid mage +3int, +1str, +1con - slightly lower damage, slightly higher health (most people start with this build, then restat to pure at higher levels, once equipment gives enough health. However, restat requires lots of money)
a light mage +3int, +1str, +1dex - balanced physical and magical defense, much easier to level at early stages and may have advantages for pk/pvp at later levels. However, hard to restat if you want to go pure later.

Level 18 - 25 is the worst mage experience ever. You have to run for 10 friggin minutes to get to your quest mobs, only to die after killing a handful. Then you run back. Then you die. Then you run back... Shall I continue? xD Just don't quit around here cause it's too hard. Like Ladyrain said before, things do get easier after you get your pushback.

Playing as a full int mage, I would actually seek out melee mobs to level on. Timing my skills right, especially slow and knockback ones, I could kill them while only taking a single hit myself. After two mobs, I could use Cold Dew to regen the lost HP and it was very efficient. :D

Ranged mobs are instant death though. You'll get butchered. Don't try. ;\

Mages are also at their best in a full party of six, or a duo with a Blademaster. I dunno what it is, mages always seem to click with them, haha. They can tank a couple mobs while doing decent damage, you can heal them if they need it, and you stand back and bomb the **** out of the mobs. It's fun.

    Here's a post I found helpful.

there are 2 builds if you go robe armor:

con build - minimum int/str for equipment, rest of points into con
pure build - minimum str for equipment, rest of points into int (so you have only 5 con)

generally, people who play mage will go con build in the beginning, since it helps leveling tremendously (you won't die in like 3-4 hits). pure build is risky, but it will pay off in the long run, as you'll deal the most amount of damage (in addition to pure archers).

people who switch over to light armor do so after maybe levels 30+ once you've accumulated enough skills, con, and have a better feel for survivability. light armor is mainly used for PvP in my opinion, as it provides more resistance against WR/WB/EA, and esp. if you have the EP's solid shell buff (% up armor defense), light armor is better. PvE monsters mostly use magic attacks once you reach higher levels, so having robe armor actually is better.

i would do +4 int/+1 con and +3 int/+1 con/+1 str in the beginning (keep str at minimum for robe armor, so around half your level generally). You'll accumulate enough con once you hit levels 40-50, then you can either lay off the con and start going for light armor, or keep pumping con or int. monsters 50+ most use magic attacks.

as for skills...max your beginning 3: rock fall, blazing hierogram, spring rush. those are filler skills between longer cast skills. after that, you decide to go certain elemental paths: water, fire, or earth.

fire - generally offensive tree (+AoE, Zhen)
water - support/assist tree (heal, add-on water damage)
earth - tactical tree (stun, slow, paralyze, blind)

some nice info in this thread

a con on higher level is though, that a mage has only limited uses. Like you might have read in above posts, it is very good against magical mobs, most notable water/fire/metal mobs, and earth to a degree. this is because they can greatly increase resistance against them, or deal extra damage to them, (or both) thanks to the elemental damage.

downside however is, that physical damage is your weakness, most notably archer mobs will be dangerous to kill, as well as one other thing that annoyed me to no end: magic resistance mobs  quite impossible to kill without aid.

This also translates into limited use in helping other ppl, only a few bosses are a piece of cake, the rest is totally impossible for example, you wont often be asked into dungeon parties etc.

pvp however is a different thing, it can be good, but is highly dependant on player skill, and gear.
