Hey all, the fan went out on my graphics card ( Nvidia geforce fx 5500 i believe but cant remember for sure) and i was wanting to know if my display will start acting up before my card gets too hot and gets fried, i know the easy solution is get a new card but $$$ is kinda tight atm, and REALLY dont wanna downgrade to my internal intel graphics chip, so was hoping maybe someone could tell me how long it takes for a card to heat up excessively while gaming, and will it give sufficient warning before going out from too much heat?

sorry, but i can't give you a definitive answer
it's really gonna depend on the condition of you card, what you're accessing in game, and a whole slew of other variables....
best to maybe talk to your card vendor?
sorry, mate.

if there is a fan on it, then it's wont last long before it dies when running w/o one.
you will get artifacts on your display when it gets too hot but chances are high it will die after few seconds of artifact showing up.
my radeon 9600 died a similar way =/PW has been endless frustration for me #2

I seriously wouldn't try to run anything on a card w/o any kind of cooling system. The GPU will definitely overheat, maybe slower, maybe faster, but the chance to get it toasted up entirely are quite high.
Why don't you try to get a new fan for your GPU?0 -
^ nvidia 5xxx series are just too old (besides, they suck performance-wise)
GPUs like Nvidia 8600/9600 are pretty cheap atm (at least in germany), but i can understand the "$$$ is kinda tight atm" part - it's the same for me.PW has been endless frustration for me #2

The following is by no means an official solution or recommended solution to your problem.
By doing any of the following, you do so at your own risk!!
If you can't afford the cost of a new cheap card (and PW doesn't have very high needs), see if you can afford a few computer case fans and hook them up so you have a solid air flow passing over/between your video card and the other cards you have plugged in to your motherboard. One or two fans sucking air in, 1 or 2 blwoing air out.
Another temp solution is to get one of those 8 or 9 inch (20.3 to 22.9 centimeters) cyclone fans for cooling yourself down. Open your case so everything is exposed. Aim the fan so it is moving air over the GPU of the video card.
Doing all of this may help you for a few weeks, or not at all. Results may vary.
The problem with any CPU or GPU overheating, is that it can cause damage to your surrounding electronics, which is of course bad. Also,as your card dies, it could short circuit and cause damage to more then a few things in your computer, your motherboard could be bricked too.
See if you can get your hands on a cheap video card to help you get by with your basic computer needs like email and internet until you can get a proper video card for the types of games you want to play is my recommendation.
Check some vendors like www.zipzoomfly.com, www.newegg.com, www.tigerdirect.com
Good luck!!Do you need help learning about patching the game, installing it, changing antivirus/firewall settings, changing network settings, learn how to use a computer, keeping your PC maintained and more?

It won't take very long at all for the card to overheat without adequate cooling. And worse, it'll take ages to cool down again once it does. It's not really worth spending money on extra fans when you can replace the GPU. Leave the side of the case off... and if you have a house fan you can point inside.. that might help a bit, but I really wouldn't recommend trying to play games without replacing the card first. Or, bite the bullet and switch your primary device to the IGP for now. At least then when you're in a position to replace the card, it will seem a little faster...
And typically, they don't give any warnings for overheating. Your system will just completely shut down in the middle of whatever you're doing.
I recommend NewEgg.com too. You can get a new FX5500 for around $30. (presuming it's AGP and not PCI).[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -

Newegg rocks, but the minimal acceptable card is a 6600. Even that will not get you far for most games. 5xxx cards are slower than a geforce 4. Pathetic.
I'd say save up around $130 for a 9600, which is still subpar, but should get you by.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

I have a 5500 card in my spare PC and it can handle most games just fine, as long as you're not over working it.
Yes, you're not going to be able to get amazing FPS rates and be able to play with maxed settings, but with enough dedicated graphics memory, it should be perfectly playable.
Of course, you should buy the best card in your price range. You may be able to get a better deal on eBay.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
well the gforce 5500 fx atually played w****** rather good so it should be enough, but if the card get too hot then theres two possibilities (graphical- core or memory chip). if the main cooling chip (core) get too hot then replace the fan. If the memori chip on graphic gets too hot place a heatsink on it and if necessary apply a small fan like TYSON cooler or sth powerful to bring down the temperature as you dont have much room on your graphiccard to put on sth big or put through a water cooling pipe0

integrated graphics like S3 Unicrome should be able to play the game as it only needs enough of RAM to get the performance and also you can then change the outcome more than with regular graphic cards. Well i personally played even carbon with my integrated S3 Unicrome Pro, but dont ask me how i managed it to work and never crash. I just guess my pc doesnt wanna give up just yet0

Running a video card WITHOUT at minimum the stock cooling will destroy your card.
When I used to play L2 I had an ATI 9800 Pro and the fan died on it. So, I rearranged my desk and ripped off the CD racks and overhead thing so i could have my tower on my desk with the side of the case that can open pointing out into my room. I then put my industrial fan on my desk (on high it can do about 800CFM) and turned it on high. It worked fine for 3 days, then I started getting artefacts. On the 7th day all 3D applications were totally artefacted and could not be used.
The 10th day is when it died and was giving me a rainbow monitor.
In short, spend some $ and get a better video card. Good ones now dont cost an arm and a leg.
Those that dont believe me, I'll be putting up a pic of when that happened xD

i ran PW with a 5500 on a old pc at home as a test and it was really laggy even at low settings with 800x600 ...
Even tho you can unscrew the fan peel off the sticker on the inside and put fresh oil on the bearing and stick something back over the hole, iiits just not worth it. 5500's are just way to old. Try to get a 6600 you should be able to pic those up 2nd hand on ebay for peanuts.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
