Against a physical immune boss, which is better:

- Using Metal attacks.
- Using 5 a/s with Blazing Arrow on.

Assume standard R8 / demon / 5 aps build.

Also, how would Death River Toxin (et al) factor into it?

Using metal attacks is far more effective especially when you consider that you can demon spark them. 5aps elemental buffs receive no bonus from spark.

In my opinion, this choice should depend heavily on which boss you are fighting, your cultivation and the composition of your squad.

Specifically, if you are fighting haunted headless, he gets nasty when someone pulls aggro from range. You should be in melee range (and you should be prepared to survive his aggro) if you have any chance of pulling aggro on him. And metal attacks will do much higher damage than claws or fists on him. However, your extra heals (and, if I recall correctly, purifies) and damage immune time and (if you are sage) damage reduction from triple spark can be good things when fighting him.

Or that has been my experience from fighting him twice, once with two clerics and no barbarian, fighting him from range, when had well under 10 minutes left on the instance timer and the other fighting him with one cleric and a decent barbarian with hours left on our timer. And using an elemental damage apoth would speed up the battle with claws (and so would a wizard buff) but would also mean you could not use apoth for survival if things go south (but if you are using claws and you are the main damage source, that is going to be a long battle and making it fast might radically reduce opportunities for things to get crazy).
