How is it that players get like 3,000 armor defense?

good armor, good shards, and good ornaments?

(i forget what my defenses are, i don't have access to the game right now. pretty sure my mag defenses are in the 3k range, or thereabouts. my pdef's less than 1k, though, even after sharding all garnets. goes with being AA...)

Um. 3k defence is quite low for a high level character.

And there's your problem. At level 32 you're not going to get that sort of defences without some serious cash expenditure.

Take a browse through pwdatabase, see how the numbers go up.

at your level? hmm... my 3x chars use mainly quest rewards, with some self-crafted pieces and mob drops; i didn't bother buying armor from other players until much later. but i don't think any of my 3x chars have that sort of defenses, either --- note when i said i've got it now, that's on my level-62 main. i barely bothered sharding anything when i was 3x, and still don't on my alts. those levels go by too fast to spend much coin or effort on gear, even for a casual gamer like me.

if you just can't game without such defenses, troll the AH for good gear and be prepared to spend. i know there are legendary armors for that level range; i've seen a few (a very few) people using it.

or use pwdatabase.com / pwcalc.ru to plan out your gear and then see what parts of it you can afford. this is more pre-planning than most folks are willing to spend on such an early stage in the game, but i guess there's no reason you can't get yourself used to the process.

Suppose I succeed in leveling to 105 (which isn't easy, with all the **** that one-shot kill me). How should I build armor defenses? Also, I should add I'm an occasional cash shopper.

you want to plan out your equipment more than 70 levels in advance? me, i'm having trouble guesstimating what i'll be using ten levels ahead of time...

i wouldn't worry about it if i were you. you don't even get into gear progressions ("to get that piece, you need to first get this earlier one") until level 60-70 or so with the early TT equipment anyway; until then, just use what seems best out of what you come across.

Um. higher level players can wear higher level armour.

Compare a fairly average piece of level 30 equipment:
    http://www.pwdatabase.com/pwi/items/4876
    (pdef: 468)

Against a fairly average piece of level 90 equipment:
    http://www.pwdatabase.com/pwi/items/14926
    (pdef: 1532)

Add to that the bonus from your strength and vit and better skills that boost your defence, remember that you get six slots that usually have pdef in them, and you should be looking at 8-10k defence without even trying, as a heavy armour user.

(Light armour the numbers are smaller, but since I get 5k as an arcane user, 3k shouldn't be hard to hit.)

And on top of that, you've got the ability to refine your ornaments, and each shard can give more defence - you're looking at about 1k more defence just from that.

In short: Buy better gear, level up so that you can wear it.

At level 30... let's see what we can get you.
With... fairly silly, but not utterly ridiculous gear:
    http://pwcalc.ru/pwi/?char=ae4acf5863a1da90
    1086 pdef unbuffed.
    1703 buffed.

You can do a bit better than that, but at your level, not hugely. (There's a fairly big jump when you hit 45 and another at 60.)

Edit: You can easily double those numbers by going heavy armour, but I assume a sin does'nt usually want to do this.

Edit2: You're on a PVP server? Yes, people can and will kill your low level backside. No, there's no way round that.

How does one refine ornaments? How does one acquire ornaments? What are shards and what are they used for?

    How does one refine ornaments?
See the Refining section of the PWI wiki for info.
    How does one acquire ornaments?
    You can either:
    1) Buy them from a Craftsman NPC (gets you vanilla one star versions).
    2) Make them at a Craftsman NPC (gets you one, two, or three star versions, possibly with bonuses, but you have to have a high enough Craftsman level and the materials to make them).
    3) Buy them from another player, usually through the Auction House, their Catshop, or from "advertisements" in World Chat.

Ornaments include necklaces, belts, and rings. You can see a full list of them at the Perfect World Database site (PWDB) in the Items menu under "Accessory".
What are shards and what are they used for?
Shards are gems that are put into sockets on armor and weapons that give various stat bonuses. For more information see the Socketing entry of the PWI wiki.
