    Now see, that's a very respectable position.

    I'm another one of these old fogies who've been around enough boards to know what a failure of a mod is. And trust me, there are many ways to be a fail mod. I've seen mods who act on bias for the stupidest things, refusing to give entire sections of the community the time of day. I've seen mods who hid their idiotic opinions behind a wall of pure holier-than-thou. I've known (and even collaborated with) mods who, while having the best intentions, hold fast to their opinions to the point of flaming a fellow mod who disagrees with them. But perhaps most irritating of all, are the mods who get off on being able to silence all discussion with a single click of the mouse. Some of those mods even employed humor in their locking posts - maybe it was funny to them, but to the people who were having a legitimate discussion in there, it just seemed like a cruel mockery.

    Please understand that I'm not accusing you of any of this, especially the last one. It's just that when I see "we need new moderators," I'm forced to wonder if that isn't just code for "it's time to crack down."

    The PWI forum is one of the better ones I've ever taken up residence on, and quite possibly the best one which is corporate-run. Why? Because, in reference to my last pet peeve up there, we don't crack down on debate and discussion. The mods and GMs here, for the most part, only lock threads that have run their course and devolved into pure flames. Frankie, for his (her?) part, has started off with an effort to pick up where Spoons left off: facilitate discussion, plan for the community events, and maintain order without silence. My only issue with this place is how we never get a straight answer from anyone above the GM's on the gold system.

    But I'll quit rambling in a sec. My point is this: injecting humor into a thread to cool flames is one thing, but we all have to draw the line between what's a flame and what's a legitimate discussion. If you're not careful, your efforts may only serve to devalue a heated, but still civil, discussion. People can believe in something very passionately and debate it while still having tact. But all too often, a mod will mistake passion for contempt and brand them as being "out of line," at which point any humor used by the mod will only seem like mockery directed at the users by a staff member. Thread gets locked, discussion gets axed, resentment is felt by many involved.

    So tl;dr: Humor is almost always a good strategy - just always be aware of when it can be seen in bad taste. Assuming you understand that, I'd definitely support you as a mod. :P

    Long post is long...but I read all of it, and I totally agree with ya. Humor is nice, and yes, there is a fine line between adding a chuckle to a debate, and putting gasoline on the proverbial fire.

    Like you said, I do try to keep a balance, and I'd probably be very wary of my locking power...probably only using it where I see nothing but flames lapping at every side of me.

    Heh, I'd characterize it more as adding gasoline to the fire, then locking it in a safe and throwing the safe down a cliff (and thinking it'll never come back... protip: it always will).

    But yeah... I was reading some old-as-dirt posts on a forum I moderate for a friend, and noticing a big difference in how most of my posts differed from the few lock-posts I had to make. Being serious in a lock post is never a bad thing. Employing humor everywhere else is, likewise, never a bad thing. :P

    (And yeah, I know that sounds silly because I rarely employ humor on this board, but... yeah XD)

    Agreed. I can't imagine myself as a mod and there are several others who, while frequent and well-known posters, would likewise be terrible choices for mod due to varying reasons.

    As to Mr. Miugre's comment, I offer this reply. Who says I'd have to give up my humor and personality just because I attained a new position? Now, giving up being a "borderline" troll, I'll give you that...and I'd happily give it up.

    I've seen how drab and dull the forums have slowly become. Like Hawk said (good to see ya again, by the way, haven't seen your avvy around in a good while), while it's nice that it's not an overwhelming flame-fest in here, forums are put in place for a reason...to incite discussion. Intelligent discussion (or some subform thereof). In fact, I probably spend more time on the PWI Forums than I do on the actual game. Why? Well, the game's gotta kinda stale for me at the moment...not much on my mind, goal-wise, just dailies and whatnot.

    But here on the forums, I actually try and help out every now and again, in my own way. Got a heated thread? Try and derail it a little and calm it down with some humor.     Actually, I never did make my own thread saying that I wanted to become a mod. I have, admittedly, sent a ticket in, but that's a different case. I do remember someone else making a thread showing their support for my cause, though, at that time, the thought of me actually becoming a Forum Mod actually seemed nothing more than a joke, and I just went along with it. Though now, I can actually see the reasoning behind the support.

    Ah, that explains it. I remembered giving my support in a thread and I was wondering if I was just going crazy and imagined it. Originally I went along with it thinking it was a joke as well but it actually did make sense when I thought about it a bit more. =/
