WTF are Protections?

Directly to the right of the happy little Sun (PWI Boutique) is something that when clicked says Protections then has 3 clickies for various things like faction etc. I ran a search here and found nothing on this subject so what exactly does it mean?

    I haven't tested this myself, so other players should correct me if I'm wrong. I believe those decide whether you can attack faction members, white names (to prevent gaining infamy), or all types of PvP-enabled characters, or hit them with AoE attacks.

    More or less what Gattsuru said. It determines who you can attack when PK mode is enabled.

    But b/c you're on a pve server, I'm not sure that it would do anything for you.
