I've recently made the switch from a Combat SW to a Trapper PF. My damage has even gone up - a lot, actually - and I'm looking for more ways to improve the damage. Roots are a big part of the damage, and hence my question(s):
I've been wondering about Biting Roots and Control bonus. Considering Roots do their damage per second, and the Strong Grasping Roots have a fixed duration, would control bonus - via Artifacts or via companions - improve their duration and thus the damage? Wether or not this is most efficient, in terms of artifact and companion slots, I'm not really interested in. Combat Advantage artifacts and companions are probably better here, but I'd switch those out during solo play anyway.
Has anyone tested this yet? Eighter with the Wisp or the Cantankerous Mage, or both? I'd really like to hear your thoughts about this. Part of the reason I'm asking this is I want to get together a build that can reliably solo some epics. I've been wanting to try that for a long time, and I want to come prepared, with decent control via roots. There's nothing quite like bunching up some mobs, dropping roots on them, stepping back and dropping the Rain of Arrows of death upon them.
Anyway, thanks.

I hope someone answers this, since I also want to know this...

Wisp definitely works. A ranger in my guild told me today that roots duration went up from approximately 11 seconds (with Master Trapper on) to about 14 seconds by adding the Wisp as an active companion. Times taken by using a stopwatch.
No info about the mage unfortunately...
Le-Shan: HR level 80 (main)
Born of Black Wind: SW Level 80
My trapper HR has rank 30 will-o-wisp (+15% control bonus) and rank 25 cantankerous mage (+15% control bonus). Tested constricting arrow in trade of blades.
With the feat "ancient roots", control duration of constricting arrow increases by approximately 4 seconds with both companions (+30% control bonus).
rank 30 cantankerous mage gives +25% control bonus which, by my estimates, would increase constricting arrow by a little more than one second, compared to rank 25 cantankerous mage.
The damage over time effect "Thorned roots" appears to work during the entire time, except for the final second.
