Well, that's obviously not true, but the GF is in my view a hard class to play when it gets really tough.
The normal leveling up experience in my view is a doddle, you barely need to use the shield and you go through the mobs like a hot knife through butter, but it's a lot harder in a dungeon with tons of add spam. But one on one with just about any enemy the GF is a beast.
The Man-at-Arms does the "over the shield while blocking" attack which is a taunt, and that's pretty much all he does, so you end up fighting them for the mobs attention. Anyone with that pet out in a 5 man dungeon is just making the GF feel like he's not needed.

Tank bosses/minibosses, leave the trash to the CW. Slot enforced threat, threatening rush and fighters recovery. Done.
I don't even bother with enforced threat, I prefer into the fray.
Besides, all the companions are going to be dead about 30 seconds into a boss fight anyway.
Actually as was stated ages ago the Man-At-Arms may have an attack that looks like a GF stab but it is actually a hard taunt. If you don't believe me watch it over ride Knights Challenge (GF's only Hard Taunt). This is why it's so stupid pretty much they can run up hit an attack and force aggro. But watch as soon as that drops off they lose aggro.
We tested this numerous times while leveling in my guild. We would run up and that guy would either drop dead or not get aggro till he did that stupid attack. Then we couldn't get the moves off him even if I Knights Challenge right after.

So it's actually a pretty decent companion to help with the trash?

Wait, you mean Aggravating Strike didn't get threat back to you either?
Wait, you mean Aggravating Strike didn't get threat back to you either?
No, still dies instantly vs decent mobs.
Compared to 2k+ stats from stone/cat...
1. Aggravating strike is not a taunt like you would see in other game, the description said taunt only for description, it's not an hard taunt, it's more exactly a high-threat attack, often it will result as a taunt, but it's not a 100% reliable taunt. Enforced threat is better at "taunting" it generates by experience more threat since the +(35?)% threat from encounter patch, i had better mileage with it.
2. Companions at lower level are better at holding threat since they have a hard taunt, no matter how much threat you do, he will always take back the aggro. But the companions lacks 3 crucial aspects that the GF has (or normally has).
A. Able to turn the mobs so they don't face the party and your melee dps.
B. Able to step out AoE attack (red circle).
C. Able to soak up high-damaging strike.
Pre-60 most dungeon are companions friendly, but starting late 50, more so for epic dungeons, a companion tank is not only a sub-optimal choice because of low survival, it could get people killed by turning the mobs on the party.
My suggestion for low-level new tanks annoyed by those companions:
-Let them tank, and use combat advantage to do more damage, experiment new ability, maybe even supportive ability like into the fray, they will keep the aggro be assured, you don't have to worry. Don't stress about loosing aggro to companions it's normal.
-Getting the aggro back after the companion hard-taunt could be a way to get experience at generating high amount of threat in short period, they will eventually take it back, but try to get used at regaining aggro, fast.
-If you are really annoyed and feel useless, ask politely for those companions to be dismissed. Most people will agree without arguing, my main is a GF, and my mage has a tank companions, if the tank asks me to dismiss it, i do it, but considering the higher level content before epic, most actually enjoy i send him on a brute or caster in the back, while we focus another target.
Furthermore, i think stone/cat is the pet everyone should aim for at 60. I could see some argument for the Kelemvor blue priest companions as an alternative, since he rarely gets aggro or aimed in an AoE because he almost never get into melee range comparing to the standard cleric. The other option would be the angel, but we will only knows next year ^^.

you overestimate the companions.
We get silly, brainless punchbags, while TES gets werewolves...no fair.
