Do you think Great Weapon Fighters need bigger swords?

You see them running around. With those huge sharpened hunks of metal... or clubs... strapped to their backs. Especially funny when it's a Dwarf or Halfling running around with one. Anyways...

Will they end up weilding even bigger blades? Like the one a certain blonde spikey haired emotional character in a popular Japanese RPG in the distant past? And how ridiculously large can those blades get before they're more a hinderance than a boon to the Great Weapon Fighter?

Great post Made me laugh, not only that, but you seemed to have angered a few people in the process which is always a plus.

    Keep up the good work

    This exactly. Nicely done.

Personally, the swords are stupid huge. Id much rather see them smaller. But thats not a fight id really want to get into. I know how touchy guys can get when it comes to the size of their swords.

Heck let me tie a halfling to a big stick and swig that around or bash a orc in the face with it. Now that would be an epic weapon.. in more ways than one XD

As a Halfling GWF, my sword often drags several inches underground, if you get my drift.

Whenever I see threads like this I can't help but think of Sanosuke Sagara's Giant Sword.

The swords in Neverwinter are already big. I don't think I could bear to see Sanosuke's Sword enter the mix. That stuff is fine and dandy in anime but absolutely not what I want to see in D&D. :)

Hehe... or even Cloud sword would be too big.

I'd prefer to see the ice axe's placement on your back to be changed to fix the clipping issues than bigger swords.

    Indeed!

The thing that gets me is that when I look at both of those it's not only physically impossible for a human being to use weapons that large due to lever laws the weight of the sword alone would be enough to snap the sword off the handle.

While I feel the swords in Neverwinter are too large that's normal. Honestly if we used anatomically correct swords things would be very lack-luster. Right now the "daggers" the rogues use are short swords. The longswords are two handed weapons. Module 1 is stated to give rogues the ability to use Short Swords too but I have a feeling those will more be along the lines of a true longsword.

The two handed swords are...well they're good mantelpiece decorations!

So truly I'm fine with all that because it is a bit disheartening to use anatomically correct weapons. But anything bigger would destroy any chance at the realism I expect from D&D.

So it won't be long before we see Rogues dual wielding Katanas, except that they're Wakizashis instead?

As for giant swords being unwieldly, I think they'd be more like blunt weapons after seeing this video...

GWF would fit right in to the Kara-Tur setting, a No-dachi Samurai paragon path would be epic.

I dont mind them being bigger or whatever but I think they should lower the atk speed of GWF by like 50% and give them much higher amount of dmg per swing instead, I mean they swing those blades faster then a GF that use a one handed blade and that doesnt make any sense at all.

When you swing the blade with a GF you can almost feel the power but with a GWF its like swinging a toyblade made for a 5 years old kid cuz they doesnt seem to have any weight at all.

Now there is one huge sword that I can see GWFs wielding. Just one problem... the weapon is intelligent. Anime fans will recognize Grospliner, the weapon wielded by the main heroine of the anime/manga "Silent Mobius. While it would be very heavy to everyone else, the sword is bound to the soul of its wielder, so lifting and swinging it would be like lifting and swinging his arm around.

Still, intelligent weapons are trouble. Especially if it's a big sword with a booming voice, evil personality, and an addiction to fresh blood...
