GWF tanking ability

I posted that in a reply but want to make a new thread and share my experience with my gwf.
First of all I went Sentinel way (defensive feats).

In my opinion, GWF have the best tanking ability - I have gf, gwf and rouge each at lvl60 and done lots of dungeon runs so I can compare a little bit :).

Gwf has some great feats+passive+unstopable which will apply 92% DR:
here calculations:
deflect for gwf armour is 50%, so if deflect successfull we will have 50% dr.

The feats+passive (Bravery)+passive(feated weapon master) on gwf gives you 15+15+5 = 35% deflect base + your deflect stat = cca 45% to have 50%dr.

Unstopable = 50dr (at full bar), dare shout encounter if full stacks = 50dr

so in total DR, under these conditions: base dr 37%, unstoppable, Dare shout full stacks, as of deflect change: full stacks of feated weapon master (15% deflect), feat (dunno name, but gives you 5%deflect), bravery(15% deflect)):
0.5 * 0.5 * 0.5 * (1-0.37) = 0.083 % Damage taken or 91.7% Damage Reduction if deflected successfuly (45% chance) otherwise 0.5 * 0.5 * (1-0.37) = 0.1675 % Damage taken or 83.25% Damage Reduction

With shout + roar I can maintain unstopable most of the time.
In dungeons I tank much more than GF, and get killed ALLWAYS LAST.
Pretty fun when you almost immortal .

Erm......a tank whose team is dead is a tank who has failed at his job.

    Just sayin'.

It's your job to hold agro so your party doesn't eat floor. If they're on the floor and you're still fighting, then you failed at holding agro.

sorry for confusion, I did not mean I do hold aggro, I am saying with this build you have really good survilabity, and still doing decent dps (not as optimal as pure dps gwf). And lastly, well someone has to die at the end if the group fails :).

I very much agree with this.

Don't get me wrong OP, I'm with you. We have ridinkulous survival if you build right. I love it. But our aggro modifiers are just horrible. I gave up trying to tank or even off tank in PvE. Yes, I out survive anyone on the board but that don't help my team who just got face planted.

my guild has a very active GWF that is doing a great job as filler. sure, he can't properly "tank", sure, he can't really "dps"... however he's a really good cleric bodyguard (holy avenger turned out to be a good choiche for this role), he can get adds off the rogue when he's busy (that would be me), he can get some nasty defense debuff on the boss when the bleed is rolling, he can get some control on annoying adds (knockdown erynny for example) and is the one that can always manage to pick up someone who went down.

jack of all trades master of none but i think 1 in a group can be really useful. just don't expect gimmicky max-dps or max-defense builds will add much to your party.

Fact 1) GWF can be very tough, but can't keep agro, thus can't tank.
Fact 2) Even if GWF could tank, the whole tanking archetype is rendered obsolete by astral shield (and foresight with feats).

Interesting you mention Holy, this is something specifically I've been saving up for when I read the stats. Plague Fire was the obvious choice, but the stats and D buffs from Holy seems a much better choice and this verifies it for me. That's going straight in the Ancient Castle.

This. Number 2 hits it spot on. I have to grind the **** out of DCs to take them down. Last night I went one on one with one arming astral and the fight went in my favor but took a good freaking five minutes.

So much correctness, I cannot stand it.
