You cannot change appearance of an item to another item that is bound. So what you need to do is buy say a green item on the AH, make sure you DO NOT equip it, and now you can use the appearance of that green item on your equipped epic.
Refruckingtarded I know.

Not true. I had a bug before a patch or two ago where i couldn't change appearance, either it didn't show up in the pull down, or it would just show an X when i tried to drag the item to the new appearance spot. Since then, it still doesn't show in the pull down, but i can drag new looks in fine. It always worked with greens for some reason, but higher didn't, now it does the drag version fine on bound, unbound, and all ranks, doesn't matter if it was ever worn.
Does this make the item disappear? I have an armor item I would love to use on all of mine in the future (or at least till I find a better one) can you use the same item over and over as an appearance?

Only if they aren't bound.
For example, you use your level 10 armor to change the appearance of your level 15 stuff. The level 10 is destroyed.
Now the level 15 has the appearance from the level 10.
Then you use the level 15 to change the appearance of your newly acquired bind on equip level 20 armor. End of chain. When you get your level 30 you won't be able to use that level 20 bound armor to change the look.

Really I've used bound items to change appearences on my armor
I just did one using a bound item, and it worked fine, however it did consume the item as well as cost a bunch of astral diamonds.

it seems the CTA items are all bound items and if you try and use them on an item that is not bound to you it will not allow you to change the appearance of the unbound item you are trying to change

The thread is ~10 months old, so kind of a necro.
GOR! This game seriously lacks for documentation... So the item is destroyed in the process?!?!?!?
The item being destroyed in the process is pretty clearly stated when you change appearance though.
