This is probably gunna get fairly opinionated but personally I stick with a DD pet since Cleric already has vast amounts of survivability and there are bosses that'll smash a tank pet to bits (Companion AI after all isn't very bright and they'll stand in AoEs). Overall play style will probably be a determining factor over what is really the best pet for you.

Then again my DD pet is a honey badger and their survivability matches most tank companions but they then don't have the threat/hate that a tank pet does.

I picked tank, he keeps agro on one target pretty well. Only level 19 atm.

cleric for pet, you can then use another DD encounter and still have your heal from Divinity available.
Let's face it, healing is pretty lame and the more you can get, the better.

I use cleric companion because she keeps me alive and I keep her alive, neverending survivability. Also, they don't annoy tanks in dungeons like the man at arms does.

As a level 60 cleric I say take the tank (Man at Arms) And no, we don't have great of survivability :P I had tried the cleric before at lower levels thinking having a cleric pet and my cleric would be great! It wasn't.

    I prefer a "tank" companion.

In Solo play, most pulls involved 1-2 (maybe 3) "tough" mobs and a number of "easy kill" ranged/slow moving mobs.

It's nice to have your companion stay up front and keep one of those tough mobs occupied. Additionally, for bosses in solo dungeons, it's nice to have him up front tanking.

It depends on play style, but I think you'd find it easier to have a tank as a companion.

I got the tank and the dog. Use the tank for just questing out in the world and he holds agrro on a single mob very well. The dog I use for dungeons and skirmishes atm. Level 33 currently.

u need not worry much on the companion for now... cuz they are all capped at rank 15 and there will be bound to have better companion in the future :)

I picked up the dog first, but then saved up and bought the tank. While the dog does more damage, its still a melee, and if you're dodging mobs on the run, it won't get to land many hits. It doesn't hold any sort of aggro either.
Given that its much more efficient to heal another character rather than yourself, and that Clerics have fairly good damage themselves, I found the tank much more effective, even when they are level 12 and you are level 30.

Tank companion + Forgemaster's Flames in Divinity mode = awesomesauce.
And I agree with a reply in this thread, clerics' survivability starts dwindling rapidly from 35+

If companions are capped to rank 15 then why is my companion 21? the level caps of companions are 15, 20, 25 or 30 based off of their tier, epic tier naturally having a level/rank cap of 30.

As far as it goes, I still don't have too many issues soloing dungeons alone and to say cleric doesn't have good survivability is a bit of a joke. If you get into a little bit of trouble just throw out a Divine Sunburst to knock everything back, then cast healing word and sprint out of range of anything. In really bad situations pop a healing potion... like every other class in the game does way more than we have to do. All the way up to level 39 I only died once and that due to there being about 30 demons hanging around one of the sewer pipes you can use in I believe it was Helms Hold.

The only other times I have died have all been in PvP.

I used the cleric companion and just did damage/tank myself, worked much better than using the tank companion.. seems kinda useless except for tanking 1 mob which is completely unnecessary.

my guess is that he is refering to the companion quest at lvl 16, all the companions given from the rewards are at basic rank so they are capped at 15. Of course if he is referring to the BEST companion in the game for clerics that is another topic :)
