Why the illusion of rolling stats?

No matter how my times i have rolled i can't exceed 80 points of total stats and worse roll is 76.

Is it easy to increase later and and is there a stat cap?

    From how I understand it, to stop people from getting all 20s or all 10s, they set up the rolling so that you are rolling a random number between 1 and 12. Depending on which number you get, you get an array of stats designated for that number.

    You get stat increases every 10 levels outside of 30 and 60, +1 to all at 30, and +1 to all at 60.

    The potential arrays are actually a set of point-buy arrays, to keep everyone balanced.

    The illusion serves a few purposes:
    One, it lowers the point of entry for players new to DnD. Literally any stat array the game allows you to take is reasonable, so players who "guess wrong" aren't gimped.
    Two, it simplifies the interface significantly.

    I actually would prefer to be able to choose my array from a dropdown. I think it would serve the game well if there was an "Advanced" option there to do that, so that beginners aren't overwhelmed but veterans can pick the array they want and move on. It could work just like character creation does. Everyone starts with a random basic appearance they can pick from a set, and then people who want to can click customize to get exactly what they want.

    That said, it's not that big a deal. I've been able to get the array I wanted within 30 seconds every time.

    There are players new to D&D???? OK i know many non-U.S. probably are :).

    And yes i wish there was a drop down to select since INT seems to have the least non-class effect.

    It's actually really annoying. Since there really is only a few combinations (especially if you're going for the max primary stat), that it just seems needlessly annoying clicking and clicking until you hit one of the few good combinations.

    Just give a pool of points and let people fill them. and if there isn't much of a difference, then don't even offer choice in stats.

    I understand its traditional, and it gives the feeling of rolling a character, but its such a small feeling and quickly loses its novelty.
