Need Help With Sisters of Strahd Bats Mechanic

This is one I thought I knew how to work but I seem to be wrong. I'm getting killed by the bats during the sister fight almost as soon as the arrows appear.

What should I be doing when these appear?
Is less than a second of reaction time adequate to perform whatever action I should?

Being alone kills me, being grouped up seems to kill the group. At least I know during the Strahd fight to stand on the candles (not that it matters because those bats don't do damage like they used to). I'm a bit lost here.

    Yeah, it’s a bit buggy. It’s not a shared damage event like it used to be.
    As a dps, the healer is your only hope. Damage comes too fast and too long for a stone or potion to help.
