I am totally new to Neverwinter but not as an mmo player and I like this game a lot.
I have played EQ2 for 9 ears, GW2 for 4 years and in both of those games the prices in-game are rather moderate.
When I started to play Neverwinter and had my first character to lvl 70 I did not understand how and why all those lvl 70 characters were so powerful and I was owned in lvl 70 zones (I have given up on those lvl 70 zones for now) untill someone told me that I had to buy a lot of stuff to be able to proceed.
When I started to really look at the stuff I needed, I realized how expensive everything is in this game, the conclusion was that I could not afford all this, I do not have bottomless pockets with money to spend and I can be online only for so long every day, I'm not 24/7 player.
Another thing that got me to explode is those special characters classes you can buy online from Arc Games site "Featured Downloadable Content", like "Hunter Expedition Pack" 86,99 Eur about $100 or in my currency 900 skr, I thought at first I had this wrong but not so.
If this is the case that Arc Games must rely on selling everything both in-game and outside it with a pricing like this to survive, then I'm not so sure I can do more than enjoy the game up to lvl 70 and smile.

it took me a good bit to get one character up to a decent gear score. However, i play to enjoy the campaigns and mid level dungeons. its a lot of content and they add more often enough. There is plenty of game after level 70. There are different classes to play through the campaigns with as well. I had a few learning curves, figured out which way to go, found a new guild full of folks with information, and finally got my first character strong enough to go through all the campaigns solo.
I see how people can spend lots of money for killer stuff; but honestly if you play the campaigns more or less in order of release and build up boons, join a nice guild if you want and do a couple dungeons now and then for ad if you like; you can get there in a decent amount of time depending on your play style and time to devote. They have a good number of cool events quite often that can give some nice free stuff (winter, summer, halloween, etc) and nice sales in the zen store a couple times a year and invoke bag coupons if you have it to spend. Even the packs have a nice sale every now and then. All that being if you even want to spend zen or earn ad to convert to zen (without using real $). And if you do wish to earn ad for zen or spend money, VIP is a decent price and can yield some useful stuff.
Neverwinter may not be perfect, but it is a fun cool D&D game. You don't have to buy anything to play the game and make it through those level 70 zones. Start with the easier campaigns and earn the boons, (except at least start Barovia to get quick starting 70 gear - thank you devs for this). Earn astral diamonds and convert it to zen (*which may take a while but they are "working on it"). Earn seals from dungeons and get gear from the previous module (which can still be pretty freaking awesome). Find some folks or a casual guild who can advise or accompany you through the game (without high priced game items). I have found that the game is changing enough from module to module here lately that a best in slot item may not continue to be so in a few months anyway. Cant wait to see what happens to builds and bis after the class balances with the new mod drop.
Anyways, in my opinion, its not really all about how well geared you are or how much money you spend; its how you build and play your character and learning dungeon mechanics. i have built alts in classes i really suck at and can tell you that no matter what i put on the character, bis or not, i am still going to suck at playing that class until i learn it well. Same goes for the dungeons.
The price may be high compared to other mmo, idk. But you can play and enjoy the game without spending much if any money at all. I played for a while before buying anything. If you enjoy the game, keep chugging, find a recent new level 70 guide, find some nice folks or guild or give me a holler. Level 70 is when the game really begins
The "Hunter Expedition Pack" is for the Ravenloft expansion. There will be one for the Heart of Fire expansion, too. These things are only a good value for you if you need the refinement points and other refinement items, and if you like the fashion and other such goodies. I did personally buy the Hunter Expedition Pack and, while I liked getting the boost to completing the campaign, I probably would have been better off to save the money and buy coalescent wards and/or preservation wards when they are on sale.
The best thing you can do is to get into a guild that either has knowledgeable and helpful members and/or is in an alliance populated by such people, then ask questions, get advice, and make the best decisions you can based on your goals, available play time, and willingness and ability to spend actual money.
I to am a casual player not online every day but try to do some runs when I can. Doing the campaigns and running some dungeons is a good advice thx, but I'm still learning the mechanics of the game and that will take time
So yes, I'm going to hold on to my money and only buy thing I must have to be able to advance in game, maybe a little slower than most but I'l get there.

I'll try to look you up when I'm on but the thing is that I'm on mostly day and evening European time between 14.00 and 23.00
2 solutions:
- You are impatient, and spend money to finally understand that the money you spent was worthless
- You follow guild/forums advices and try to earn AD, get profit from double events, spending it in promotion. But must of all, you have to be patient, like at least 3 months of grind. Guild can help you a lot with this, accelerating the process.
As an advice, if you ever wanted to spend money, each year on the last friday of november the zen market is -40%, so the wait is worthy.
Most of the purple mounts can be get in the AH for 3 days of grind after you hit lv.70 if you can max your 100k day limit
Enchants are still expensive but not like they used to be, and gear is much easyer to get
Zen sale tip from "tassedethe13" is really good and "if" you plan to have many toons one account wide mount will help
My tip, play more pay less or you will get bored really soon, i've seen a lot of powerfull guildies left the game after they became BIS and found the game boring...
