New GF PvE tank needing build help

HI

I hit 70 2 days ago and obviously my build is not right so I have just been playing around with nwcalc.

nwcalc.com/index.html#/gf?b=2xhn:yu8tjz:dn8j:6jgwh,13j3k05:1000000:1zz5xv7:1000000&h=0&p=ivn&o=0

was hoping that someone much smarter than me could give me some feedback as to the build and what can be improved and why.

Cheers in advance

I should also add that I am not a Human so do not have the extra 3 points

    Build is legit.
But is still depends what race You play.
It is 'bout ability scores and perks given by race.
For instance, dwarves seem best GFs in case of giving +2 CON *AND* +2 STR. They are more immune to knockbacks, while Human can roll one chosen +2 AS and has 5% more defense than other races.
It also depends how You roll later on AND progress through levels.
CON is obvious, but i'd want to know:
-What race (optionally which Ability Scores pack You picked)
-Your AS progression through levels - DEX gives more deflection for instance annnnd
PERSONALLY decided to go full CON and DEX on my human.
I treat myself with high defense cap and 23% def. chance.
STRENGTH should add to guard meter, as was displayed on old wiki, but naah, only stamina/guard gain.
It adds damage naturally, but, as someone wise said: "Tanking is renouncement of Your damage in case of superior protection skills." ...that didn't sound that bad as I quoted ^^

Answer, please, these two questions and we can then discuss your build more widely.

P.S. If you REALLY have to, contact me by sending in-game mail on my handle.

Hello i too have few question.
Im back to nev, and have 3 characters but i like GF. I prefer play GF BUFF, but now i have few questions about GF BUFF.

    1. is plague are still best options? Pure is enough or trans give me more?
    2. Which skill now use to orcus? For buffs and keep agro?
Now i have "shield talent"/"enhanced mark", "enforced threat"/"ITF"/"Commander strike", "VM"/"fighter recovery" But sometimes i have problems.
    3. Now i have 70% DR negation is good or soulforged is better?
    4. Now HP is more important than deff or deflect?
  • sulajplsulajpl Member Posts: 77 Arc User
    1. Try faetouched. Trans enchs have additional effects, try to read and consider if it is in pay.
    2. Every GF has problems sometimes so keep to Your fav tray / playstyle, even actives are picked well here.
    3. Nega MR. Getting over 80% DR is pleasent i think.
    4. HP and Deflect are now MORE important then deff. This order.

1.) p.fire is the most cost efficient enchant, keep it at pure, trans has no real advantage.
2.) Enhanced mark (combined with off-hand power). Since you are IV, might as well use your ferocious reaction.
3.) You already have close to max DR, chances are you will also have additional buffs that add to your defense so Negation will become pretty useless, at least for PVE.
4.) Max your DR first, then head for HP. Having high DR and guard completely counteracts the effectiveness of deflect. This is the same reason why you should ditch Devoted Protector for Crushing Pin (+10% damage for your party against mobs hit by your control powers).

@bluerawrer#1559 About your build, consider using commanders strike. I've been using the following rotation in FBI for preview : ITF - KV - CS. Using threatening rush to mark mobs for CS. I can contribute an additional 10% to the party's total damage with CS alone. I don't know if you need trample the fallen though. I'd also take Griffon's wrath for Crusing Pin. Frontline Surge is also an option for procing Crushing Pin against a group, also adds an additional mob control option just in case your group needs it.

Finally, you really should consider getting Daunting Challenge and United, these two feats will protect your party for an additional 15% damage.

What's the best race for just straight tanking?

What's the best race for just straight tanking?

I would go with human. I prefer to have the 3 extra heroic feats compared to any defensive bonuses or stats the other races give.

@oliboyph thx your answer was very helpful.
    Last 3 questions.
    1. I have giant beetle but maybe now better is Savage Pllar Bear?
    2. Bonding now is important for gf's buff only for pt. dung?
    3. What do you think about this armor enchantments: "Shadowclad" or "Briartwine"?

    1. Giant Beetle is not that useful these days, at least with savage polar bear you can victims preservation bonus which is pretty good for tanks.
    2. No, bondings do not help you with buffs anymore. I use them primarily for recovery now.
    3. Go with soulforged, you can even keep it at lesser for the moment. Combined with lathander's set, you and your party get healed up for a hefty amount of hp every time you get auto-revived. Briatwine is terrible, you'll only reflect back around 100 damage.

Ok about lathander set i must buy it, before i use CON belt. I saw soulforged lesser will be good options. But why greater or Trans soulforged was are expensive? They dont have poverful bonus, and what do you think about "Shadowclad"?

Because the cooldown and hp returned for soulforged improves as you level it up, and for most classes that is a very big boost. As GF you can also benefit from the reduced cooldown, but I would suggest spending your AD on other gears before improving soulforged.

Shadowclad stacks chances of deflect and then clears your stack the second you end up deflecting an attack. It's not really particularly useful for GF tanks. You will deflect attacks often enough just because of the natural deflect chance you get. It's going to be seldom that you actually get to that 8-stack deflect that will proc daze, which is what other classes like about shadowclad.

Thanks for the response. When I am on later tonight I will take some screenshots in response to the questions. I would like to wait tanking t1 dungeons until I am confident with my build. I've been working on tyranny and elements campaigns. I'll be farming some skirmishes too. I'm about to join a good guild this weekend who will give me help.

In contrast to min maxing I picked a tiefling as I was more interested in the race yes I know the 3 points would have been awesome but hey...

Well, if you are still starting out, stamina will probably be your biggest problem. As long as you have your ToD, IWD, Sharandar, and Dread Ring boons you should be good to go, even at minimum item level.

Constitution is not needed. I respec'd and changed 30 Con with fire buff, to 25. I lost 5k HP and 5% action gain. But got to put 5 and 5 in Dex and Strength, which give 3 bonuses each, 1 being stamina regen. Action point gain still is close to 30%. Also the 3 points for being human really doesn't help a tank so much, at least I don't think. I don't waste the 15% on threat gen, as if you run with knight's valor, or a few other skills, your threat gen is no prob. The best race would be Metallic dragon born, 3% HP, 3% power, 3% crit, 3% incoming healing bonus, but very difficult/expensive to get. The Seldarine belt gives +2 con/+2 dex, and is fairly cheap. I had a negation enchantment, but 3% stacked 10 times seemed to already be pushing me over 80% damage resist. The shadowclad, besides deflect, gives damage resist of 4% stacked 8 times past rank 11. And they're cheap, 180k for rank 8.

I have taken Strength and Con so maybe another mistake on my part there. I did take some screenshots last night but haven't uploaded them onto my laptop yet and I'm really busy the next few days so may have to leave it. I have the seldarine belt. I don't have Sharandar or Dread Ring boons yet. I'll add some updates soon.

Why did you get Dex? That only gives small AoE resist or resistance ignored. It's always best to stack up on the stat you need. Seladine set is ok, but I prefer Lathander's because of the Recovery you get. My ITF cooldown right now is only 7.5 seconds.

No, you do not see the Icons for these feats, but they work.

Dex also gives deflect chance, with the AoE resist and resist ignored. I'd rather have 5% extra deflect, 5% AoE resist, and 5% armor pen over 5k HP and 5% action point gain. Constitution is the main stats, and does 2 things, and the HP is a joke. I had 40% action point gain. I'd rather have the deflect/AoE resist/armor pen over 5k life/5% action gain. My ITF recharge was around 8.5, now it's around 9-9.5 secs.

Next question, today i want buy lathender belt. But i see 2 type: Lathander Belt and Greater lathander Belt which one is better?

You mean 2.5% deflect? It's .5% per 1 Dex. Anyway deflect isn't very good for tank GFs. Your Defensive Resistance combined with guard effectively reduces damage reduced by deflect by 96%. Normally it's only Conqueror's that want Dex.

    Thx

Check the level requirement, you want the greater Lathander's belt. lvl 70. Of course blue is better since it's already upgraded.

Sorry, 2.5% deflect, 5% armor pen, 5% AoE resist vs 5k HP and 5% action gain. Still going Dex over Con from now on. From all the different thoughts on here, I've seen some say Deflect is more important now, and others say HP and Def. Mine is around 40% deflect now, 30% stamina gain, 27% action gain, and AoE resist is around 30% I figure. It'll be better to see when x2 refine hits and I upgrade. But the HP bonus from constitution is a joke, 4% x5=5K total? And Con only has 2 bonuses, regardless if it is the "main" stat. I was worried it would drop me 15-20k HP, not 5K. Easy choice now.

That's true though, Con bonus is not that good. I actually put more importance in STR and INT. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that Defense and HP is more important the deflect. I've tried doing every sort of combination and builds in FBI on preview, and the most secure build is from Defense + HP. Even at 200k HP I still get reduced all the way to just 5-10k hp, every little bit will help when the content gets too hard. Even if you don't add stats/feats to your deflect stats you will still end up with 25% deflect chance anyway.

Barthos. Enjoy your site. It has been helpful in getting my original main up to snuff for my regular group. Do have a question though. As I hit 70, and started replacing gear from either the trade bar merc or blues from AH as a starting point, it became apparent I am not sure where to focus secondary stats at. Any advice?

i.e both items might have def and deflection, but 3rd stat might be power, regen, or AP. Is there a good rule of thumb (Like Def then HP then Recovery) for prioritizing the secondary stats? Or is it more a personal investment? Came up also when choosing a boon in Ele Evil.

    Hello again
Lately i dont have to much time to play but today i do few dung and i have little problem, my stamina ends very quickly. I remember after mod 10 it worked better, but when i come back to play i change few skills. Now pls tell me this mod also changed stamina regen?
I still use skills for my stamina and use shield talent.
And how you now hold orcus? After patch i all time use "steel defece" and in this 6 sec i use all my buffs and other skills. What now?

Main offense stat to focus on is Recovery. Just slot all your offense slot with silvery. You'll still end up with some Power and arm pen for dealing damage to gain threat.

There have been no changes with stamina. Check your boons, you may have replaced your Stamina regen boons with something else. steel defence is still pretty good with Orcus, it's just a little shorter. The Idea is to catch Orcus' hits. If you see him swinging hold bring your shield up. After a few times you actually remember his rotation so you start doing this instinctively. If you see green orbs coming pop Steel Defense and run. After that, just go back to him with shield up.

Yes you are wright i change boons and now it's ok. When i change boons i too change stast. Now i use CON (for HP) and STR. Earlier i use INT/DEX and CON and in boons use action points gain, when i quick got 100% action pkt. i all time use daily skill and have bonus from "steel defence". Now i dont like SD i prefer other skills (now i use "shield talent" and "enhanced mark") so i dont need use all time daily. But after patch i do orcus 1 time with good pt, and i I'm afraid maybe now without SD i will have little problem with this boss.

You should just try, if you have a problem without SD just pop it back in.
