Stronghold PvP armor essentially are Zen market purchases...BiS gear is now pay to win?

I played a round of Stronghold PvP today and noticed this.

At the end the match, I was on the losing team but still got a reward - a Stronghold Lock Box and stronghold coffer coupon.

Prior to today, I was looking at the armor offerings at the stronghold armor vendor and understood that I needed a combination of my stronghold coins, pvp seals and the banners which drop from the Stronghold PvP match.

Today, I had the revelation that I needed stronghold lockbox keys in order to open the lockbox that contains the banners. So far, I've only seen the keys for sale on the Zen Market.

Does anyone know if there's any other way to get these keys? AH doesn't count since that's just someone buying the keys off the zen market and reselling them (for a higher price usually).

If not, then I would say that my discussion title speaks for itself and is the start of a new trend? A bad one at that. BiS gear is now pay to win only.

    Eh, no moreso than preservation wards have always been P2W.

    Also, P2W arguments are generally prohibited or something?

    Fortunately, with AD prices for zen declining, there should no longer be a wait time on the ZAX. Of course, whether or not the stronghold box keys are cost affordable or not is another issue altogether.

    No, this is different than Preservation wards. You had the option (a bad idea) to refine without a preservation ward.

    This time, so far as I've been able to discover, I can only get the banners from PvP. They are only given in lockboxes. You have to open the lockbox with the specific stronghold lockbox key in order to get the banners.

    This is not an option like preservation wards are.

    Im pretty sure since this game caters to losing teams fairly well, this is not the only way to get them and this is probably premature.

    I'm hoping this is premature and that's why I'm raising the question to see if anyone else has found an in-game method of obtaining these lockbox keys.

    It is not premature. It is exactly as planned. Cryptic are letting you know, in no uncertain terms, that if you are not paying, they do not care about you and you cannot advance your character.

    Did you win? I would think the winners would be granted the banners without cost. The Dragonflight give a lockbox for just killing one dragon--but give fangs free if you kill 2 or more.

    This leads to another question--can you solo queue into Stronghold PVP or do you have to go in as a team? I see the Stronghold queue now, just like GG or Domination....

    It has always been designed to solo queue and group queue together.

    Ok. I think I've answered my own question.

    Just played my second round of Stronghold PvP and won. My rewards this time included 3 banners, vouchers for stronghold, and the lockbox containing 2 additional banners and voucher.

    Good news, lockboxes appear to be identical as they also stack in inventory and identical in content (2 banners + 1 voucher).

    So, no, Stronghold PvP gear is NOT Zen Market required purchase.

    Conclusion
    Zen market purchase of lockbox keys allows for an additional 2 banners per reward which also appears to be given whether you win or lose a match (1 lockbox). This is a bonus to the in-game reward of banners for winning. This fits the existing lockbox/purchase key model. This one is just specialized towards Stronghold PvP.

    I actually got a Banner from a loss in my first Stronghold PvP match. I don't know how rare that is or not, or even if it's intended, but an hour long, laggy mess of a loss got me 1 banner.

    It's higher than 500 which was my score this round with a loss.

    If it's like regular PvP, maybe the minimum is 600?

    I confirmed yesterday that while on a losing team and having at least 600 points, I got a free banner along with the lockbox of banners.

    So, no, dragon armor is not zen made armor. But ofc, spending zen would make it faster to get.

    winning a game scores 3 banner, its not that bad considering you get a free T3 armor with just 8 wins, or 12 wins for armor piece :)

    Yes i won a match and get 3 Banners... so is not p2w is pay to be faster.
