Right now, each class has its own unique main hand and off hand weapon combination. For example, the great weapon fighter uses greatswords and sword knots. For those of us who prefer other types of weapons, there are weapon skins like mauls, great axes, and spears. However, the randomly generated loot and the vast majority of epic weapons are greatswords.
So here's an idea: Why not make weapons randomly come with different appearances? They'd still be functionally orbs, longswords, bows, etc., but now you can get a unique look while leveling. For those of us at level 60, what about changing epic weapons to drop with a random appearance? For example, instead of an Ancient Castle Champion's Greatsword, we might get an Ancient Castle Champion's Greataxe or Halberd or Longspear. They would all have the exact same functionality, but their base appearance would be different. Basically, instead of a specific weapon for each class, we'd have a specific weapon group.
Great Weapon Fighter: Two-handed weapons.
Guardian fighter: One-handed weapons.
Devoted Cleric: Holy symbols which actually look like those of specific deities (see the deity icons in character creation).
Control Wizard: Orbs and tomes.
Trickster Rogue: Light blades, which include rapiers, short swords, daggers, and other light blades in 4e.
Hunter Ranger: Bows and a pair of one-handed weapons that may or may not match.
They don't need to add new models. Cryptic can simply reuse existing models for the random weapons and the epic weapons. What do you think?
