Im still a bit new so have much to learn
But ive hit 60, and started Sharandar & Dread Ring
Currently my gear is mostly blue, with Main and Off Weapons of Mulhorandi origin, and also got some purple cloak/neck, my enchantments are rank 4 with a couple of 5's
My stats arent great but roughly speaking i have 2.5k Power, 2.1k Recovery,1.4k Crit, everything else is under 1k
My problem is this - I can afford 3 pieces of gear from Sharandar, but wearing each of them would lower my crit by 250+ each piece
The only things that will improve are my Power and Recovery which i feel are plenty high enough, at least considering the type of gear i can find and use
The Dread Ring gear doesnt seem much better
So i guess my question really is, are these the only choices i have?
I dont have the diamonds for any decent gear off the auction, yet
I dont really run dungeons, had bad experiences in them early on, which i wont go into here.
Im not bothered as to how long it may take me to get new gear, im just a little disappointed that hitting 60 and unlocking gear from Sharandar and Dread Ring feels kinda pointless
Do those vendors show more stuff as i progress?
Drake and Unicorn seals may eventually get me what i need, but thats a slow path, which im fine with, just wondering what (if anything)am i missing in the short term
Just letting you know you're not the only one in that kind of position. I recently got to Lvl 60 and everything I recieve in Dread Ring and Sharandar are useless. I'm basically stuck at 6.2k Gear Score and I need a minimum of 8.3k to join the Epic Dungeons that drop the loot I need.
I have heard the only other real choices you have are buying or maxing out enchantments to Epic. Also do lots and lots of dungeons especially if Dungeon Delves is on. You will get some good gear doing this and if it doesn't benefit you it would probably got for a few K on the Auction House.

Sharandar gear is pretty bad, same with the DR gear. I would suggest doing Gauntlgrym for coins(your current stats are fine for the T1 dungeon) and farming coins to get the GG gear set.
You can also get the T1 archmage gear for not a great deal more than the cost of the crummy DR/Sharandar store gear. The 10k, 20k price on that Illuybreusfsudfn stuff is ridiculous given how poor it is in comparison to T1 or even well selected blue gear.
I would have to see your gear setup before offering any more in depth advice however.
If you have no other options, then maybe unicorn/drake could maybe do in a pinch, but they have no set bonus. The jewels work well though.
As Tang said, the PVP sets for CW's are actually decent with the GG set being the better of the two. Also, if you are farming grym coins in GG dungeons you have a chance to get CW loot as well.

For a CW, it's actually not that difficult to get into a mish-mash of T2 auction house purchases fairly cheaply. Go shopping after Dungeons Delves, when people are flooding the market with items for quick sales.
Head - Firegiant Coronet
Arms - Thickgristle's Armwraps, Hulk's Unyielding Bracers, Arcane Overseer's Gloves
Feet - Boots of Domination, Arcane Overseer's Slippers
Off Hand - Lord's Talisman of the Dark
I have found all of the above at buyout prices under their 8k salvage value. Prices on some of them will fluctuate with availability, but some of that stuff is so common you can find a cheap one pretty much any day, if you time your shopping right.
The Dread Ring orb from Phantasmal Fortress (Thayan Zealot) probably has higher base damage than the cheapest thing you can get off the AH, but if you have really bad luck with drops, you can shop for a Burning Shard of Elemental Fire (don't pay more than 10k).
Epic CW torso pieces are harder to come by cheaply, but you can hope for a lucky lair drop in Death Forge for that, or just not worry about that one thing being blue. Or get the cheapest Infernal Cloth Armor you can find, but don't expect to pay less than what it would salvage for.
My budget CW's gear is rounded out with a Demonweb Wrap and a Belt of Arachnid Mastery (under 6k each). Her rings are just level 60 blue ones chosen to help balance her stats.
If you hold out for the free weapon and armor from Dread Ring lairs, you can get everything else for under 2 days worth of AD refinement. It's not a set. It's not BiS. But it's not actually that bad either.
Do Karru/FH/ToS/SP during DD to get the chests. Do them until you have 4/4 High Vizier set, then you will have the best CW set in the game and be at least of some use in parties.

Thanks for the good advice folks, least now i know my options
Quite a few of you missed that i dont really do dungeons, but do want to start pvp, which im no doubt seriously under-geared for
Also all those abbreviations mean nothing to me, as i said im still new enougfh that i havent learned the jargon
Ive really just played through the game, unlike with other games havent even found any newbie guides, just build guides (and i do my own feat selection, not cookie cut fotm)
The FAQs and guides i did find seemed to jump straight from basics like "how to install the game" to "builds" and "AD farming"
So i dont even know what gauntgrym is, dungeon? pvp? solo? forced team of a-holes that kick you before the loot is given? Or even where/how to access/enter it
As for those other abbreviations... may as well be in Dethek, Thorass or Auld Wyrmish
I do appreciate the effort though, think i should go try to find some basic game guide and learn the lingo and decipher the rest of the suggesstions, before bothering with much more playing
For example "Do Karru/FH/ToS/SP during DD" only has 2 words in it i understand "do" and "during" And if i knew what the abbreviations meant, i doubt i'd know where to find/enter them
Assigning feats, picking powers, using the right powers in the right situation, i figured all of that out, but i have massive gaps in my knowledge of the mini-games and stuff
Hope i dont sound ungrateful, all answers really are appreciated, no matter how bewildering or confusing some are
to the off topic guy - you scroll down the thread list at bottom you click "post new thread", and sig and stuff is through the user cp, which is at top
Click on K. After a minute of contemplation all the abbreviations will make sense.
Click on L it will show current and near future events. DD is Dungeon Delve event during which every dungeon also gives a special chest to every member. That chest has a decent chance to contain the best set gear item for your class.
Karr - gloves, SP - head, ToS - armor, FH - boots.
Maybe you should learn the game first though.

Thanks again guys, you all been a great help
"Maybe you should learn the game first though."
Yup thats the plan, i can play it fine, i just missed out on my usual FAQ cram session before playing, i guess it just downloaded too fast to give me chance, and since then ive been too busy playing
The main thing was learning what is out there, where and how to get it, doesnt bother me if it takes me years, as long as i know im heading in the right direction, now i know that im a happy bunny,

Study Grimah's Comprehensive Wizards guide in the guide section at the top of the thread. All will become clear.
Just play along, when u are unexp having better gear doesn't help much.
But as a cw there are 3 things you want to acquire:
1. A stone.
2. HV set.
3. Perfect Vorpal.
If you are good your cw would shine with really little gs or gear as long as you have the above 3 things(Vorpal is not that important, it is just a booster). If you are unexp you can be 15k -16k gs and still give surpar dmg.
I use rank6 and rank5. My dmg is ungodly only beaten by top tier gwf and cw who actually use rank 8/9 or even 10s with companion and stuff. It all comes down to the right build and knowing to play your class.

(Note - this post got looong - my apologies
Ive tried to summarize it in an analogy at the bottom for the TLDR types, but without the explanations that ive detailed before im not sure how much sense it will make. My advice is NOT to reply if you cant be bothered to read it all, but its up to you)
Was going to let this thread die, but as its getting replies i'll continue, was also going to post much of what ive written below in a new thread on General discussion, but it cant hurt here, its getting attention, and if there is some forum <font color="orange">HAMSTER</font> wants it moved because its in the wrong place then so be it
I now have all purple except my boots, so gear isnt much of an issue atm, and some people were right, gear cannot compensate for skill, Dread Ring wasnt that hard for me in all greens, its just faster now
Someone said "when you are unexp, gear wont help"
Well im not exactly unexp (by which im going to assuming is meant "inexperienced")
Ive played MMOs since UO launched (15-16 years ago)
What i havent played much of is "WoW-like games" which im told by friends this is (they wont even come try a wow-clone)
Ive never played WoW, nor any of the wow-clones
So this whole having events handed to you every 5 minutes and spoonfed content is what is new to me
Im used to grinding and earning things over years of play, it may surprise some players (and certainly some devs) that i LIKE to grind and earn things slowly over time
I didnt try to hit level 60 in just a few days, it just happened, i'd have preferred it took me 3 months to hit 60 and another 3 to get purple gear, i'd have learned as i levelled then
What is confusing to me is all thiis instant gratification, and constant stream of things to do
Bear in mind the two games ive played most (UO and SWG) didnt even have quests, so certainly not quest rewards, nonetheless i played each of those games for over 5 yearrs, and wasnt bored of the lack of "things to do"
Whilst i am not opposed to having all these events/content, i do find it totally bewildering
I guess its goes back to as a kid we would happily play with stiicks and a puddle all day, my grandaughter knows all about apps and smartphones (she teaches me) but she knows nothing of climbing trees and splashing in puddles, how sad
Im going off on a tangent a bit, but it was to make a point, that im an old <font color="orange">HAMSTER</font>, and this is a very modern game
I came here because i was a DM of D&D/Forgotten Realms first and second editions for 15+ years, and because its still several months until The Repopulation launches
So inexperienced? Nope, i have about 35-40 years of gaming experience, nearly 20 of those on a computer
But for a game like this, yes im a total noobloid, but my experience helped with "playing" just not with the culture shock of this type of game
I can play the game fine, learning the skills and powers was easy to me (they are very basic), learning to dodge and stuff came naturally (though was new to me), im not really having a problem with "playing a wizard", switching builds/powers to fit certain fights etc is all easy
The gaps i have in my knowledge are because the FAQs/Guides iive found seemed to go from "Neverwinter will be a free to play mmo, it is currently in beta"
straight to "Here is a uber endgame build for wizards"
type of guides, with nothing in between
What i would like is a BASIC guide
It is only because of trial and error that i figured out iit was WASD, and though it surprised me, the mouse buttons dont control my movement, but instead are my basic attacks. Now some of you are thinking "Oh come on, loads of games are WASD" Maybe they are, but ive always either used a different preset keymap, or rebound all the keys myself, in every game ive played holding down either the RMB or both mouse buttons made me move - so you can see how different this game is to play
There must be a guide somewhere that says "to move use these keys" etc, and though that may be too basic, it may go on to other less basic things
I guess what im saying is where is the basic manual? If this was a on-the-shelf game where is the equivalent to the manual that wouldve come in the box?
Because when i look i find a plethora of NWN/NWN2 manuals, but for Neverwinter all i find are endgame guides and pre-launch FAQs.
There is - i should point out before others do - a google result called something like "14 newbie guides for neverwinter", but they have this gap, and many of them are not guides but 3 lines in a forum post or something written during beta.
These include such errors as "Right click a playerr to get a context menu and invite them to group" well for me right clicking the mouse is an attack - so theyre pretty wrong/outdated (aka totally effing useless)
Im assuming that such a manual would also teach me about the Homepage ingame window - which up until reading replies in this thread i had been instantly closing assuming it was an advertising thing to sell me Zen
Im not stupid, im not new to gaming, i am retired from work, so have much time and inclination to learn and play, i just cant find the perfect guide.
I have to add, in previous games ive not really needed them, but something about this game makes me feel like a fish out of water, it is all so very unnatural to me, automatically finding groups and being teleported to dungeons, just feels wrong, you are now surrounded by strangers and your characterr didnt have to fight his way to the dungeon entrance...
Ive so far rejected all guild invites, because so far theyve all been blind invites
Who invites people they dont know to be such a close part of their gaming life?
I expect to at least be asked about my gaming expectations, and expect the guild to tell me theirs before i join them, but a simple "Hello, my guild is recruiting, would you be interested in learning more about us?" is how i would do it, and have done it
Am i being too old fashioned? Are manners and courtesy now old fashioned things to be dispensed with in a modern fast moving world?
Id prefer a guild with less "kids" in - not an age thing but a maturity thing, also a guild that isnt totally wrapped up in constantly running dungeons or pvp to the exclusion of social interaction with guildmates. You know the sorts, the only interaction between players i organizing the next raid or pvp pre-made
There is no friendship in such guilds, there is simply the using of one another to further personal goals not achievable by solo play
Is this guild inviting me filled by religious fanatics who think "bad language" is immoral? Or are they right wing racists? Do they fill guild chat with drama and arguments about nothing? Do they act like sensible human beings, showing restraint sometimes, but allowing "bad language" if not used as insults? (BTW ive encountered all 4 of these types in the past)
I cant possibly know these things from a blind random invite, and they cant possibly know these things about me
However had i accepted one such invite i may have learned more basics... of course the experience may have soured me completely to the game too, as randomly grouping for dungeons nearly did, the two random dungeon groups ive joined almost made me quit, in the end i settled for quitting dungeons
So, not even sure what my real point is now, but for the TLDR types, i know how to play my toons, it seems its the game i really dont quite understand, and im amazed that all of you seem to know exactly where to go and what to do at any given level
It never occurred to me to go back to Sgt Knox once i hit 60 (last time i saw him was for my artifact quest at 15th-20th), but of course he told me about GG, but apprently i cant go there unless in a guild, which i guess explains blind random guild invites.. as mentioned above i will only join certain guild types, so how to find them? accept all random invites until i find one i like? I wont do that for the same reason i dont bite each apple in the grocer's before buying apples, and besides anyone who recruits that way is NOT the right guild for me
Hmm, that became quite a lengthy post, even for me, and its certainly strayed away from a "wizardly" topic
But with the way people were misunderstanding my noobishness for ineptitude, or lack of player skill, i felt i had to explain what im looking for, and what i already have, and ego comes with difficulty to me so saying "im good at this" was very hard, i am not a bragger
I kinda feel like someone being given a classy sports car to drive, and though i can drive it, keep it on the road, and get to my destination without killing myself, maybe even win a race, it doesnt help me understand what the seatbelts, indicators and windscreen wipers are for, what the sat-nav or cd-player does, or even how to operate the electric windows...
Kinda hoping that analogy sums up the entire post for the TLDR fans

*snip*
But as a cw there are 3 things you want to acquire:
1. A stone.
*snip*
What kind of stone? What is a stone? (in this context) How do i not know what a stone is when i know what a HV set is, a Vorpal ench is, heck until your post mentioning GS (which took some googling) i didnt even know what a gear score was, or that they are meant anything other than for settling pissing contests like children might argue about
It all comes down to the right build and knowing to play your class.
With as much humility as can be conveyed on the internet, i think thats the ONLY thing im not lost or confused about, i CAN play my wizard - i doubt i'll win any duels or pvp contests as i havent tried that yet, but PvP is partly why im here, so i will do
The bits im NOT clear on are how you all know about and understand things like Gear Score, how you all knew that going to GG is a good way to get purples, i only knew about Sharandar and the Dread Ring because in my first hour or so i went around and talked to every NPC i could find, and made a mental note for later, then went back once i hit 60
Whats hard is the things i dont know about - i dont know about
So how can i ask for them to be revealed or explained?
I just feel there are some massive gaps in my learning of this game
Gear Score, i didnt know about, Gauntgrym i didnt know about, if i hadnt been a nosey **** i wouldnt have know about Sharandar and Dread Ring
Now you mention "A Stone", and by the way you said it im guessing its something obvious that pretty much everyone except me knows about
Which i understand is a mile away from the OP i made, but as it took me literally 2 mins after reading the first few replies, to grab some purples, im almost embarrassed that i even made the OP

These are classed as augment pets and pass all their stats to the user. Thus if you have gear that gives a bonus of 1000crit, 1600HP and 200 arpen on an augment pet, you get those stat buffs directly added to yours. These do not influence gear score, but your will regularly see people in /lfg saying things like 15k CW +stone to indicate that they have their stats augmented by such a pet.
Because of the rapid pace of levelling in this game it isn't uncommon for people to hit 60 and still not know that much about the game.

I too am an old "<font color="orange">HAMSTER</font>". My advice to you is the following, which I hope does not come across as anything other than my trying to help you. The single best guide for learning a Wizard (stats, gear, enchants, "stones"....) is in the guide section at the top of this forum: Grimahs Comprehensive Wizard Guide. You will learn a lot about that which you seek. Also, there is a Neverwinter Extended Faq that may help you as well. I, like many on these forums, had the benefit of playing Neverwinter before the expansions, so once we got to 60 is was easier to understand that you geared up through the dungeons, Auction House, GG, because we had very few options. Now you add Sharandar and Dread Ring, Boons/campaigns, Active Pet Bonuses...etc. I did, and still do, a lot of Forum reading.
Tesyra, I am also new and in the same position as you (like many others I suppose). This game is rather new and as such, many things need to be done yet. I hope that in the near future Neverwinter comes up with a good game guide in which all kind of things are well explained, keeping in mind that new players are not familiarized with abreviations and terms that for old players are normal. As it is now it's rather difficult to find the right answers to many questions. They are often vague for new players and often they contradict each other (like p.e. which is the best set up for a particular class and so on).
As for the guild I react like you do. I reject blind invitations. I haven't got yet any guild invitation in a proper manner so I am guildless too, lol. I heard of a guild for mature players but I dont remember the name.
As for dungeons I don't do them neither. I have done a couple but I stop doing them because I dont like that senseless running and especially the lack of proper communication among the party members.
I suppose that like everything in life all is a matter of time. So in time we will learn how it works. I hope, lol.
Good luck!
Just wanted to put this out there for the newer players. Its not perfect, because it relies on the community to provide information, but its definitely a good start and there is some really useful information.

Just wanted to add more thanks
And say - Ah yes ioun stones, i did know all about ioun stones and the cat, as i said there are many things i DO know, but many gaps too, and one such gaps was you saying "stone", that lack of "ioun" made me wonder if it was something else, like for example a nickname/realname for some uber wizard weapon (much like Excaliber is some uber sword weapon in myth)
I am accumulating the info, the Wiki (actually there seems to be 2 at least, but thats not unusual for an MMO), the forums and wherever i can, its just all a bit piecemeal, it comes in dribs and drabs, and doesnt always come in the order i need to know it
The extended FAQ however was one of the things that prompted me to ask fdor a decent guide, it seems very lacking... it explains all the things that anyone can easily figure out and still seems to focus an awful lot on mentioning Zen (im guessing originally to calm fears of P2W prior to launch), it skips over some other basics (i never saw it mention WASD movement), and pretty much fails to answer any of the Q's i would FA (frequently ask - not the other thing)
Im sure ive missed things, perhaps at the time they didnt apply to me so i moved onto another guide, so im going to go re-read a few of them
Think i read the Comprehensive Wizard guide, or at least some of it, think thats how i knew about ioun stones and the cat
And 100 forum points to anyone who read my overly-long post

I'll say a bit about guilds.
The ones that do blind invites are generally just looking to get or keep their numbers up. You're right; they don't care about you, other than the fact that whoever sent the invite saw that you're not already in a guild. They don't really expect you to care about them either. I don't know about drama, but I wouldn't expect them to have any kind of unified agenda other than the idea that quantity makes for a superior guild.
You will see some guilds posting recruiting messages in zone chat. Some of them come across as very earnest. Some of them are getting the word out that their guild exists for players who speak their language or are in their time zone.
There is a guild finder tool on your social menu in-game (O). You can search by language, time zone, keyword, etc. You can look for a "mature, friendly" guild.
These forums also have a guild section where there are both recruitment threads from guild officers, and looking-for-guild threads from players. This allows for a much more in-depth introduction than the text limitations of game chat, and you can get a feel for things like silly vs. serious, willing to help members learn and gear up vs. only interested in recruiting players already geared and capable for end-game content, etc. Links to websites like enjin also help a lot with really identifying the right fit.
There are some really terrific helpful guilds out there that put the emphasis on camaraderie and helpfulness, but these also aren't the types of guilds that tend to advertise a lot or recruit aggressively, being built on a foundation that does involve friendship.
I played for months before I decided which guild I wanted to apply to because I felt it was the best place for me, and I'm very happy because we suit each other just fine. I'm sure I wouldn't feel the same way if I'd just accepted the first blind invite I received, so definitely take your time looking to make a proper connection.

There is a guild recruitment section on the forums that you can go and read up on various guilds until you find one that suits your personality and play style. I would never join a guild on a blind invite. Ever.
A quality guild will be a great place for you to meet like players, team up and try your hand at Epic dungeons. They will help you gear up, and get you involved in Gauntylgrym and PvP as well if that's what you want to do.
I looked around for a while until I found Grievance, and it was a good fit for me, so I'm glad I took my time and really sought out a group.
I would agree, in most games your better gear will be coming from the dungeon grinds, simply because it is harder, more time consuming, etc. Pick one dungeon, study it to death, then run it until you turn blue and a symbol of pain forms on your forehead. Then my friend, you shall be worthy of the gear you earned from the dungeon. 8-)

to the off topic guy - you scroll down the thread list at bottom you click "post new thread", and sig and stuff is through the user cp, which is at top
The gaps i have in my knowledge are because the FAQs/Guides iive found seemed to go from
"Neverwinter will be a free to play mmo, it is currently in beta"
straight to
"Here is a uber endgame build for wizards"
type of guides, with nothing in between
What i would like is a BASIC guide
What kind of stone? What is a stone? (in this context) How do i not know what a stone is when i know what a HV set is, a Vorpal ench is, heck until your post mentioning GS (which took some googling) i didnt even know what a gear score was, or that they are meant anything other than for settling pissing contests like children might argue about
With as much humility as can be conveyed on the internet, i think thats the ONLY thing im not lost or confused about, i CAN play my wizard - i doubt i'll win any duels or pvp contests as i havent tried that yet, but PvP is partly why im here, so i will do
The bits im NOT clear on are how you all know about and understand things like Gear Score, how you all knew that going to GG is a good way to get purples, i only knew about Sharandar and the Dread Ring because in my first hour or so i went around and talked to every NPC i could find, and made a mental note for later, then went back once i hit 60
Good luck!
