Just recently started playing Neverwinter with a cleric. For my second character slot, I want to play a control wizard. I've read through the comprehensive wizard guide and found it informative, but as I'm new to the game, I'd like to know good starting stats to shoot for and perhaps a leveling progression for feats, powers, etc. Just a link to a build would be quite helpful.

There are several builds in this class forum. But in the end (if you play with different builds on the preview shard) you will find that all those builds can be tweaked to your liking.
Also, depends on what you prefer to do once you hit lvl 60. For PvE content, search Thaumaturge builds
    http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?465221-Pure-damage-Wizard-build-Feywild just an example
For PvP, choose Oppressor path only. Though i don't know any up-to-date build for that (i don't PvP).

I would closely follow one of the guides on this forum if I were you, it's kinda easy to screw up your build if you go by ear. These are the ones I like most for PvE:

    http://nw-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?464811-Versatile-Renegade-build-Feywild

Both Thaumaturge and Renegade perform beautifully. If you're interested in PvP more, there are at least 2 guides I know about for Oppressor (thaum/rene quite viable as well though):

There are a few "missing" spells in the linked build, such as SotEA and Shield, which might come useful in PvP for some styles. The feats are still spot on IMO though for a PvP build.

What are good race choices and what kind of stats should I aim for?

Any you like basically. Doesn't matter really in the End, it just makes up 2 points in the stats at most. I went for Sun Elf, but all Elves, Humans and Tieflings are the usual Mage-Type class. I wouldn't go for a Half-Orc or Dwarf, but it depends on the immersion factor you wanna have or if you wanna Max out yout Stats. If you're not sure, Humans are always good with the 3 extra Fear Points and the +3% defense. Other than that, it depends on how you wanna play.

CW will be refreshing after starting off with a DC. I rolled a halfling CW for the lulz and have no regrets, so yeah, I'd agree that you can roll pretty much any race and be fine as long as you're not in it for the min-maxing, more PvP-focused side of the game. I get the impression that's the only place where your race can make a huge difference.

I like them both for different reasons. I have no idea if I will ever attempt PvP. I went with Tiefling for my CW. Just seems to keep getting stronger as I gain power points. I'm following the Renegade build/guide someone linked earlier.

I have a question about gear while leveling. Which stats should I focus on or are the pieces of gear the game suggests as "recommended" good enough?

Crit, Recovery, Power, IMHO. Also by the green stuff from the equipment vendors in Protectors Enclave, if they are better than what you currently have. And always equip the weapon with the highest damage available.

So damage of the weapon over its stats?

Depends on the difference of the stats, but bascially: yes.

After playing for awhile now, I'm starting to get interested in PvP a bit. What would be a decent route to go to be able to do PvE and PvP? My race is tiefling.

If your not too high level, I would probably go with a 16/16 roll on a Human or Tiefling if your really trying to go with the best option.
18int 16charisma for human or 18int 18 charisma for Tiefling. My main has a higher roll in Wisdom, & I just can't bring myself to gear up an alt 60 Wizard, but 16/16 seems like the best base roll to me.

Now that I've gotten a few different spells and abilities, I'm getting confused as to what I should have slotted in my power bar. My wiz is level 32 now and progressing quickly with this double xp weekend. I'm hoping to have her capped before or shortly after it has ended.

This thread has been very helpful for me getting ready to start a new wizard, but since the recommended builds posted were prior to Module 2 wanted to ask if the recommendations for leveling builds have changed due to the update, any suggestions?

Also trying to decide between Sun Elf and Tiefling, any recommendations for a primarily PvE CW?

For you question about build, take a look at Grimah's Shadowmantle Spellstorm Thaum Spec. (PvE) and for your question about race, take a look at Grimah's Comprehensive Wizard guide

ive updated my guide to be more new player friendly. as for PvP. it mostly comes down to gear (having some good HP gear), and power choice (ray of frost is great for pvp) and like any mmo its all about learning how to counter or predict what another class does, a spec wont make you suddenly amazing in pvp.

for gear to level up in, i recommend doing the same with every other class during leveling, stack "of youth" items so you have little to no downtime.

    Thanks for the replies!

For the youth armor, is it recommended that I just look for drops, or should I be using the AH every 5 or so levels to keep things upgraded (though I don't have a ton of AD, so this may be cost-prohibitive)

I'd say go with what you have, don't spend AD below 60, although many items are blow 100 AD so one can buy these.

When you reach 60, post again and we will tell you what gear you'd want and what your priorities should be.

But to be honest, the green items you will get together with some rank 3 or so enchants in them should do just fine up to 60.

dont buy it if you dont want to, use the pieces you find, its possible to just get through the leveling wearing rag tag bits and pieces. The leveling is so fast anyway.

Appreciate all the help everyone. One last question, I might be misreading the overall CW guide, but I'm not finding what stats I should be targeting for a tiefling CW who plans to follow the spellstorm path, should I be looking at 20 Int, 15 CHA, 13 WIS? or 18 INT / 18 CHA / 12 WIS?

Both are valid choices. I--personally--would go for 18 INT / 18 CHAT / 12 WIS.
