Whenever the developers decide the game is in a state which they want to label "launch," the beta will end. It doesn't really impact us as players. It's simply a marketing thing.

Honestly, some never come out of it really. They might declare it at some point though. Typically, when you only see a few bugs or issues, it's done. This game will probably need a lot of time to iron things out, being it's Cryptic & all.

Oh, so the rumored "drow" race truly WILL stay exclusive after the founder packs are gone then? Launch could (hypothetically) be a year from now, but I remember something about vanilla drow coming out 60 after "launch". That's too bad, we'll never see them then, huh?

    Sources or bull****.

They have said more than once that they are treating open beta as launch. you will get your drow access in 60 days.

Then why are people still debating the definition of the two? And where's the dev post that says "Drow available June 30th"?

While it's called "Open Beta" it's really a soft launch. Betas are usually free notwithstanding paying the founders fees to get in one. You usually receive an invite/key and then go play a beta, for free. Since they are taking your money if you want to give it to them, it's a soft launch. IMHO :)

And to note soft launch is just a nice way to break it to you that the game has simply launched.

Its not really an 'Open Beta' since they won't be deleting characters and are fully willing to take your money.

They're just calling it such to cover their hindquarters for anything wrong with the game. But I can't truly fault them for it based on the last two launches. Its probably a good idea for them to work out any really bad kinks before letting themselves be reviewed.

NONE of that matters as long as they're holding their additional content for "post-launch". Like I said before, the game could hypothetically be in "open beta" indefinitely, justifying them NEVER releasing, because there's no official launch.

Now, I know that hypothetical situation is ludicrous. I'm positive there WILL be added content (eventually), and it will probably be sometime after they get the game working (done with stress tests) and balanced with current content. But everyone saying, "Oh, it's just another way of saying launch," is simply false hope for people hoping for new content in the near future.

The most solid added content I've heard of and which is ready to be next out the door is the drow release after "official launch", which could be next year for all anyone knows. Warlock? Ranger? Dragonborn? Sure...... eventually. But all the talk of this being an official release of the game is only false hope for those waiting for new stuff.

I agree - and a first few days of an open beta serving as a stress test is probably a good thing.

Typically, an open beta is a one month process, the same is happening right now for Marvel Heroes where the next month is open beta. You normally keep your stuff (except for the case of DDO which had a cash shop for open beta and then had to wipe but refunded) and you have to deal with freebie trolls who want everything for 5 cents. All the experienced gamers/guild leaders here have already said our peace about this forum, but yea, this game has drawn a conspicuous amount of total No-Nos.

This is the definition of beta I will never get used to. I mean for me beta is just that. It's a beta test where they prepare the game for launch by squashing bugs, doing major balance changes, and testing stuff like server connectivity. Once the beta is over all characters are wiped and it's a "fresh start" for everyone. The purpose of open beta for me is to have enough players to show all the logon problems and issues that only real players can generate because every frikken mmo will have them. If they treated beta as real beta at least some bellyaching could be avoided but hey, it's their game.

I would point out that the only games I've ever heard of that didn't end open betas with a sever wipe have been a couple games designed as F2P titles. So normally speaking you don't keep your stuff after an open beta.

Though I suppose if F2P titles continue to be the 'norm' and they insist on calling their initial launch an 'open beta' you'll eventually be correct.
