refinement point overflow

Question: When you refine an artefact and you go over the rank required to level it up to the next tier (say green to blue), are the excess RP lost? Or do they just carry over?

I ask because I spent all my AD on some new artefacts from the AH and I want to throw my old artefacts of the same type into them, but I am worried that I will waste a huge amount of RP if I exceed level-up thresholds.

So could I fill up the artefact with as much RP as possible, then just do multiple upgrades, or should I invest just enough to get to tier 1, then upgrade, then just enough for the next tier, etc....?

The refinement points stay there once you refine. You won't lose them, they will be there after refinement. if you lost them, refining would be a nightmare because you would lose tons of RP refining old items to new.

Thats what I wanted to hear. great, I can dump my old artefacts into my new ones and upgrade when I get around to buying the marks.

This is valid until the last step in refining I mean the last rank.

I know this sounds obvious but you WILL loose your RP when you're 10k till Mythic and dump 20k to finish it off.
In above scenario, 10k will be lost.

Note that if using RP stones (enchants, thaum, reso etc...) the game won't let you add more than enough stones to reach the final cap. It will let you waste the excess from the final stone, however. If you dump a stack into the artifact and the slider isn't letting you use the whole stack, you know it is maxxed. Best practice is to put less in, in case it crits. Even if it doesn't crit, I like to leave the last stone out and use low quality ones to avoid waste.

Ex: The game will let me put 45 gree reso stones, but I only add 44. The I put some white reso stones, or white pearls or similar - I saved that Gond RP for this purpose - and avoid wasting RP.
