What am I not getting about "Steel Defence"

Never really noticed this before, and its never really mattered tbh. But since starting Cloaked Ascendancy with my GF it appears that my alleged 3.5 seconds of immunity to damage through Steel Defence when I pop a daily is actually 0.0 seconds immunity.

Is this another one of those special Neverwinter things, where the words mean something other than what they suggest they mean in the English language?
Is there a special "unless" caveat that I'm not aware of?

    Im not sure of the mechanics of Steel Defence myself. I use it all the time in MSVA when Storvald uses his drumivate attack, I have been insta healed for 1.2 million before, im not sure if that is steel defence or a clerics gift of faith. Im a tactician and still need lack the ap at times to pop a daily when needed. Any tacticians played around with having damage resistance over the cap to buff the ap gain?
