Crash To Desktop

Just curious, does anyone else suffer from this constantly? I have it happen multiple times per session, sometimes when changing toons, sometimes, with no warning - BAM - no game just the desktop. Then I get the usual useless 'CrypticError' what were you doing when our game failed? I never have this issue with other MMO's I play onlie so I strongly suspect Cryptic's hardware or server connection glitches and cuts me off.

This has been happening frequently in the Well of Dragons, usually in the middle of one of the HE's. It has been less common for me outside of the Well of Dragons, but still happens in HE or Stronghold Dragon Flight.

Sudden drops to desktop are MUCH more likely to be on your end then on PWE's server end. If you want to test it, pull your CAT5 cable while in game.

I would shoot for Video related issues. If Windows, check the Event Viewer under Administrative tools.

I have had at least 5 CTD since the last patch. (Dec. 8, 2016)
None in the 4 months before that. All in demonic HE's (IWP, DR, WoD) that were above 50% - and had more than 9 players.

Craptic Error tool started every time. No issues on the verify.

Yes - during the Dragon Run in Well of Dragons. Its happened about 4 times now. Especially annoying as I have set up and invited players to the DR and then crash out after one dragon. And of course when I log back in its all over.

I've had a few CTDs and all of them came in sessions where I'd been doing demonic HEs in IWD. They all occurred after I'd left and were preceeded by graphics not rendering. The actual crashes came during points with a LOT of FX going on.

No one has mentioned video cards yet. Roll call?

    NVidia GTX 960 or 970
    Not necessarily the newest drivers.

Radeon somethingortheother. I bought it to run Skyrim, so early 2012 model.

ETA no, 2011. I bought it to run Oblivion, which I started a year before Skyrim.

Radeon Somethingortheother is not enough to go on. It's sort of like saying you bought a Ford Somethingortheother. ;)
Any given year AMD will release 5-10 Radeon Graphics Cards. We don't know if you bought the 2011 Ford Taurus with 3 wheels (some Graphics Cards are outright bad and not worth comparing to a functioning car) or the 2011 Ford Mustang GT.

Press Windows Key + r to bring up the run box. Type in devmgmt.msc
Look for Display Adapters. Press > and you'll see Radeon Somethingortheother.

Crashing to Desktop is not a server issue (you are not alone to assume such) as clients don't normally crash if you lose connection to the server; you get sent to the login page of the client. There are a plethora of reasons it could happen though mainly due to any Windows Developer's biggest frustration: the plethora of hardware configurations.

    Two simple things to try:

    1) Update Drivers
    2) Switch the game back to DX9 (while that option lasts)
    3) Drastically reduce the game settings and gradually increase features until you start seeing crashes again.

Unfortunately these things tend to be hard to diagnose both for players and devs. :(

    +1 here

It can be easily tied to the NW.70.20161025 update branch. Well of Dragons and also the Spider HE in the Stronghold are frequent crashes. I had more over the weekend simply because with the Underdark event running I spent more time in the WoD than usual. But the Spider HE frequently crashes since a few weeks. Also very limited occurrences in the Shores of Tuern.

Not going to run further tests, that's the job of QA. Have fun with this ;)

And drivers are uptodate, switching to DX9 have done jack all for me and I run the game on lowest possible graphics setting in WoD. None of it have helped any, despite this rig being far above spec :/

This is definitely not computer or user issue, it is something with Cryptic and the game and it is getting worse. I have found that if I switch characters very slowly I don't get logged out. However, almost every time I try to do a dragon run in WoD it crashes by the end of the first dragon. It has also started crashing when I run back up to the start of Dread Ring to turn in quests. I hope dev's can figure out why this is happening soon because it has gone from annoying to very problematic. Thanks!

    Please supply computer specs.

Compatibility issues are computer issues. The code in this case is likely incompatible with certain hardware some/all of you share.

Think of it this way: when you tell a mechanic a car is not acting the way it should the first thing they do is ask is for the make, model and year of your car. Saying "the car I have should work fine" does not help them diagnose the problem in any way and they are going to repeat "what make model and year is the car?"

Before they can diagnose anything they are going to need to know the make, model and year and likely to take it for a test drive.

Telling a software developer that your computer handles everything else without any problem, that the computer is above specs or anything other than the computer specs is not advancing the conversation.

The devs obviously will not show up at your house and take your computer to "test drive" it but when people who experience a problem report the computer specs they can look for similarities and determine the actual hardware which conflicts with the code and thus work to resolve the issue.

Without supplying computer specs you are actually asking for a mechanic to fix your car blindfolded.

Specs. Okay, I'm running on this, bought in September this year. Better giving it this way lest I forget something.
Also it seems to come and go. I just did a Dragon Run in WoD. Instance maxed to capacity and everyone (or near as) was doing it. But I did crash at all. The hour before we were at 2/3 capacity and were weren't that many at the dragons. Crashed at second dragon.
So it's not just the number of people present/stuff going off at once that's mucking things up.

Cryptic loading screen crash. This happens after the game itself crashed while I was doing nothing. I have no idea how the game could have gone from running flawlessly to not at all under d3d11 (Kubuntu 16.10, latest stable wine/drivers/updates etc, d3d9, 10, 11 installed, compiler_47 disabled, mono, gecko, and xact installed via winetricks - all on a pc with i5 6500, 8gb 2133 ram, nvidia gtx 750 ti 2gb gpu ... on a sesame seed bun) The loading bar on the cryptic boot screen gets to about 90 - 95% before crashing. Any penguins - or indeed, anyone - out there with a suggestion of how to proceed from here? More info about my system is available if you need it.

    Many thanks in advance :)

Since the new fishing zone was added, yes I had a ton of crashing to desktop as well. Recently it's been a lot better *knocks on wood*. Not sure what happened. I used to crash almost once a day. Especially if on a DR or right before Orcus. From Feb 2016-the Fishing update I maybe had this happen twice? Since the fishing update, several times a week.
Again, it hasn't crashed on me for just over a week so maybe they fixed something? I have a friend however who still crashes daily.

    @sundancewanderingwolf
Mine comes and goes. Like one update I'm fine, next I start crashing like crazy and it'll continue for 2-3 weeks before it gets "fixed" for a while.
As noted, it's likely some sort of compatibility issue somewhere in the code. But with the numbers of different hardware we all use, without specifics from us there isn't much they can do. So I'll encourage you to post the specs of your computer as well as those of your friend's if you can get them.

I can say one thing. Using DX11 makes things infinitely worse for me crashing wise, which sucks as alternatives soon will not be existing.

I'm not happy that other players are having this same HAMSTER problem, I am gratified that I'm not alone, it is not my computer, it's Cryptics issue, I still suspect that their hardware is to blame, overloaded servers and such. Just suffered another one while changing toons. It also seems to freeze my comp for up to a min as it slowly finishes whatever is associated with this issue. I will not hold my breath waiting for them to figurte out what is causing the crashes.

No. If it was only the hardware at Cryptic you wouldn't be crashing. You'd might get SNRs or be disconnected, but not crashing. There is something in the code of the game that interferes with the hardware or software we have. But withouth knowing our hard- and software specifics they certainly won't be able to solve this.
So if you won't help by providing that, the yeah I won't be holding my breath.

Well for a start what graphic card do you use? And what processor? And what system do you run on (Windows 7, 10, something else)? Also which DirectX version are you using?
The source might lie elsewhere, but those are the obvious places to start with.

since i have installed dx11 on my evga 960s while doing a fresh install of evga drivers how come I'm unable to to dual log or is that because I'm not running on dx11 ?

I've been crashing several times a day now, most frequently during Dragonflight in SH (70% of the time, not good), eDemo (over 50% of the time as well), and Tiamat (not quite as often). I've probably crashed during other things, but none that come to mind right now.

    Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
    Intel Core i7-3630QM @2.40Ghz
    12gb RAM
    Nvidia GeForce GT 750M

I was running the game on DX9 (never changed it back after they fixed that bug from ages ago, but I just switched to DX11 to stop that stupid pop up in the launcher.

The one thing I've noticed is that of the limited specs here, including mine, 2 of them are GT 750s, and one is a 760, which is probably pretty similar.
