Artifact appearance change question

So I changed the look of my artifact weapon and am in the process of refining it. When I eventually upgrade it to the next state, will it lose the appearance change? I'm a bit concerned since I used a unique weapon and there's no way of getting another.

yes once you upgrade it it will revert back to its normal form, found out the hard way.

Didn't for me.... my sword kept the axe skin I put on it after refining it to blue and then purple quality.

In my experience, when you increase a piece of artifact equipment in rank (if you use marks and wards) it should retain its appearance.

If you infuse a piece of gear with elemental power (if you use Black Ice Shaping profession) it will consume your old item and give you a new one, removing any visual changes and reinforcement kits.

Maybe that's what's causing confusion?
