I've gotten so many coal wards* since the 'nerf' (I'm not convinced anything was nerfed). I never have to buy them, ever, and the droprate have been about the same since the open beta (about 3%, or a little less than 1 in every 20 coffers). If there's an appreciable difference between now and then I haven't noticed it. Pray to RNGesus. Sometimes your luck just stinks.

Keep in mind folks: You don't get them "from invoking" - you have to spend your Celestial Coins that you get from invoking on one of the Coffers that have a chance to contain them, then open those coffers. Just wanted to be be clear on that as some of the wordings of these comments leave me with a perked brow.
Invoking on over 20 characters, I get aywhere from 1-4 every two weeks. I buy the first of the three 11-coin Coffers only. I don't open them up individually. I put them in my Account Bank and every two weeks, I open the whole lot by double-clicking them in rapid succession on a single character, while alone in an instance (currently using my Stronghold, before I'd just switch to the least populated PE instance). Not sure if being the only one in an instance matters, but I am weary of RNG so will try anything to make my RNG odds better.

I just buy Elixirs of Fate and then sell them on the AH, and use the AD to buy zen, which I then use to buy coal wards using a 15% off refinement coupon.
Actually, huh. By the math, if each coffer had a 3% chance of dropping a coal ward, I'd be better off buying the coffers instead of reselling the elixirs. Welp, time to shift gears.

I dress up like a scotsman, drink some scotch and walk around my house backwards singing at the top of my lungs before coming it to open boxes. I get roughly 1-3 every 2 weeks from 6 characters.
Yeap! same thing works for me!

...dang. And I always sacrificed a human female...
What do you sing? "Scotland the Brave"? "Flower of Scotland"? "Danny Boy"?
so basically unless i have an army of alts, chances of getting one is slim to none
No, your chances are 3%, same as everyone else. People who open more coffers are naturally going to get more coal wards, that's just how math works.
That is not correct. What you mean to say is your chances are 3% PER BOX, same as everyone else. Clearly opening 20+ boxes per week instead of 1 increases your overall chance quite a bit. So that changes his chances from "slim to none" to just "not likely".

Well obviously it's 3% per box, that's how odds work. It isn't cumulative. That doesn't make me incorrect, it makes anyone operating under the assumption "Well if I open 19 boxes of junk my 20th box should have a coal ward in it" incorrect. Each box you open has a 3% chance of having a coalescent ward in it. Opening 20+ boxes still gives you 3% chance per box, but the chance you will get ONE coal ward out of all those boxes increases, yes. These are two completely separate things. It doesn't make what I said any less correct.
You have a 3% chance for each coffer, no matter how many you open. It's random. Somewhere there's a guy who's opening up two of them today, one for each of his two characters, and getting a coal ward in each box. As I said. Pray to RNGesus.
Based on pure probability, the chance of getting a ward, when the chances are 3% per box, is... 3% per box. However, you greatly increase your OVERALL chances if you open 20 boxes at the same time, each with a 3% chance than if you only open one box. If you take 20 tries, at 3% chance per try, your odd of success are NOT 3%. It's 3% per try, yes, but without getting into binomial mathmatics and Bernoulli trials, the point is, the probability of success actually DOES increase the more tries you make. It takes a bit of a conceptual leap, especially if you don't understand the mathematics behind probabilities, because it requires you to adjust your frame of reference a bit. But, you DO have a better chance of getting a blue ward if you open 20 boxes at once than you do if you only open one.

I don't believe that makes any difference whatsoever. I have a friend who opens 50 coffers at a time and gets zero Coal Wards. I open them in batches of five since the invoking changes in Mod 6 and I have gotten roughly 10 during that time. I currently have 4 in my inventory waiting for RP event this weekend. I only open the third coffer (Celestial Artifact Equipment) not that it makes any difference either I bet.

I stock up all the boxes and open them up during 2xRP (i.e. today). I don't know if that gives better luck for Coal Wards but it does not create an extra inventory space problem when opening them up "pre-maturely". I got a few Coal Wards since I joined in mod 3. Last 2xRP, I got 1 or 2 Coal wards.

I follow the same route, only I open them once I have reached 11 coins on 10 characters across two accounts. So 10 coffers opened every 5 days or so. I would estimate I get 1 Coal Ward in 20.

I just buy them when I need them. The odds are too low for me to deal with this. I know not everyone wants to do it that way so I understand. They are expensive.
It does make a difference - unless you set your frame of reference to be 6 months... in that case, you can take all the tries you made and set them as a REALLY LONG trial. Just because your probability increases as you include more tries in the trial, doesn't mean it will ever reach 100%, and therefore, it doesn't mean you are ever GUARANTEED a success. So, yes, it's entirely possible to open 10000 boxes and never get a single blue ward, however, it's incredibly unlikely such a result would occur.
I save up 15 and then open them. The last 2 stacks I opened I got 3 coals (2 and 1). Before this I opened the boxes as I got them and never got a single coal. Call it coincidence but I'll keep stacking them

For purchasing, get VIP. You get a lockbox key daily. Open 30 lockbox should give you enough T-Bar to buy a C-Ward if not more.

VIP pass is definitely the best way of getting coal wards IMO, but the more people buy VIP the less valuable it is.

No matter how many ppl buy VIP, 200 Taurmaline bars remain 200 Taurmaline bars. Coal Wards are no less valuable purchased in this way.

Not true.
Scenario 1: Get coal ward (BtA), buy up shards, make a lesser weapon enchant, sell on AH.
The more people capable of doing that, the lower the value of said weapon enchants, the lower the value of the coal wards going into the weapon enchants.
Scenario 2: In order to better cover the cost of the VIP pass, sell items from lockboxes. The more people do that, the lower the sale price of said items on the AH, the less AD returned from the VIP pass.

since the nerf, which was what 1.5 yrs ago? I have gotten exactly 1 coal ward.
it's BS
