Assasin = Rogue/Sin, This is your stealth class and used as close combat DPS
Vampire = Necromancer without the summons. This class is your DoT and DPS
depending on build. If i recall correctly can be a sub healer, sub tank, and possibly main healer
Warrior = Warrior/Fighter/Knight Basic close combat sword. Pink because only real mean wear pink :P
Mage = Warlock/Mage/Magician Your long range attackers with little health, My opinion on the races are Human is for DPS and Kindred for DoT.
Protector - This is your Tank. When you see a Protector in a PvP situation you will probably think F***. This class can be made to be HIGH Damage or Tank. So if you want to be able to take hits like a boss and deal some damge then choose Protector. if i remember they have slowest attacking speed. Not 100% sure though.
Assasin - These guys have DPS down. They attack fast and swiftly. So fast their opponents are sometimes stunned. Assasin have great speed attacking and good damage. Not as high as a Warrior or Prot but they make up for it with speed.
Marksmen - This class has a good Story behind it in my opinion. So if you want a Story choose Marksmen. They are range attackers and they use guns. They have a decent hp amount and are DPS but they still lack Defence so dont go aggro crazy. Now, I think of them as a PvE class but they are still good in PvP. If in the hands of the right player you can be amazed at what a Marksmen can do :P
Priest - They are your healer of the group. If you are planning on PvP you will still be good. When you are in a instance you are expected to be the healer. If you arnt a healing priest you still have a healing spell(s). They are good at everything in my opinion. They are DPS and a Healer in one. Usually seen as a Healer
Mage - High Damage, Mobbing, DPS, or DoT. This class has all those options but still lacks at HP. Mages can be made for PvE, Instances, PvP, or what ever you want. I think they are the most flexible class. If only they had more Health Points. Mages are the only class that each tree will effect your role the most. Ice mages are focused on 1v1 PvP and single targets. They are made for kiting. Fire mages are the DD of range classes. They lack safety but make up for it by dealing more damage. Lightning mages are for mobbing. Their skills increase area of some attacks and a few other nice perks. EVERY tree has a AoE spell.
Vampires - DoT, DPS, sub tank and sub healers (possibly main healer if you go into the blood tree). They can be a healer but not the most reliable. They can do Damage over time and do more damage or do DPS which is damage fast and quick. So do more damage over a period of time or Do damage quick and painless :P Close Combat
Bard - They are a Sub healer support class DPS, Depending on your tree. This is kind of like a long range Vampire but with music and doesnt do DoT. They also have just lovely buffs. If you want a buffer this is it It also can be a sub healer or a main healer if your talents are stacked right. I highly recommend this class if you like a unique and challenging playing style.

A modest correction, if I may? In terms of tanking potential I do lean toward warrior preference but prots and warriors are actually rather close to being even, and I'm much willing to explain why this is the case.
It's quite an incorrect statement to argue that prots have higher defense, because it's simply not true. Warriors are far more sturdy, and the mere fact is that most people are so MMO-stupid that they can't play a class properly.
Prots are better at cranking out threat over large pulls but warriors can definitely hold a boss better. A warrior is far more gear and build dependent than a prot, so yes, the comparison to a Paladin is quite accurate for prots. They take very little skill to play, and they're the lazy-mode favorite tank. I am not arguing that they're ineffective, but simply that an Aegis Warrior played properly is that much better, minus that aoe taunt.

If i may rebuttle,
What you say is true somewhat. Warriors can hold a boss better then a prot. I kind of beleave that. BUT protectors can take more damage then a warrior.
Also with the player comparing. You compared the average "lazy" prot to a skilled warrior. Now think of a skill protector vs a skill warrior in tanking. With both good gear and a good tree. Who is the better tank? Protector hands down BUT warriors deal more damage which kills boss faster so less damage taken. Thats my opinion. This is a guide for the AVERAGE player not the skilled. The average warrior is not a decent-good tank while a average prot is a good - amazing tank
Skilled well there just drop dead godly tank :P lol

If I may add,
On top of that most warriors don't roll aegis because Elem and Phantom Warr's can also tank pretty well and aegis just doesn't compare dps wise. Now high end instances, I was in a party with a prot and warrior, don't know their trees (should've asked ) but the prot was handling the adds and the warr was taking the boss. Given it was AC and the warrior was 76 (way over leveled) and the prot was 72, but alas, this is how it worked. It worked fine, there was no aggro pull there was no confusion.
I completely agree with your statement Ashaw that the player makes all the difference. I don't know if you saw the post(s) regaurding my dilemma with prots, but essentially: High level fail prot <<<<<<<< 10 level lower prot. We're talking similar build, similar gears, and one couldn't hold aggro the other held aggro of those 15 levels above him. So it's really all up to the player.

While leveling a prot does outweigh your average aegis warrior because of their low gear dependency, but I intend to hold firmly that the sturdiest endgamer is a properly equipped Aegis Warrior.
Any class that STARTS with additional threat is going to be the tank of preference, but that doesn't make them the best.

But archeden, read what your posting cause your saying a Average amount of skill player, with low-decent gear as a prot vs a Skilled Good geared Warrior... Who is the better protector??? That will 99% of the time be the warrior.
Now if you do a
Marble Protector, Just as skilled as you, and Good of gear as you
vs
Aegis Warrior, Your skills, Your Gear
whats the better Tank?

Only an illiterate person would think that I've made an unbalanced comparison. Prots are this game's paladins, as you said at the beginning, and they're exactly that. Aggro machines that come second in hit-taking.

Warriors = Medium-High HP, High Defence, DPS-Damage Dealer, and Medium Attack Speed
Now if you add gear, build, skill into it then i will have to say this
Protectors can take more damage while taking same or more damage then a Warrior.
Warriors can take less damage but recieve less damage.
Bosses = High Damage to their target = High Defence and HP wanted
That goes more to a Warrior, IF it was so
Protector goes more to mobs cause they do less damage while being more they still deal alot more damage.
Because the defence isn't all that much of a diffrence to damage recieved.
While Protectors have i think more then 2k HP then a warrior. Probably more then 2k. Ive never compared end game Warrior, Prot HP and defence so if someone could please post. With NO Gear on
The chance of a warrior dieing with the average Divine Priest is probably 20%
The chance of a Prottector dieing with the average Divine Priest is probably 15%
Really this is a matter of opinion. But im 100% sure only a few people Spec for Tank as a warrior since they can already tank but their specing is worth more in damage. That way if tanking the boss dies faster but if not tanking is a decent Damage Dealer/DPS

I can tell you right now as a Marble Prot, I can give any Warrior and 20 second headstart on the boss and before the fight is over I will have usually taken aggro back and hold it for the duration of the fight. Marble Prots have WAAAYYY more aggro generation than even an Aegis Warrior. Now if there are multiple adds its probably better to let a Warrior tank the boss and let the Prot manage the adds since a Prot is also better equipped to deal with aggro on multiple mobs.
In general, Warrior does have a much higher base HP but that just makes it that much harder for the Priest to heal. Its easier to heal a 5k hp Prot taking 500 dmg/hit than a 50k hp Warrior taking 5000 dmg/hit.
I also refute the idea that Prots are a "lazy-mode" tank. If a Prot is doing hit job well, he can and will maintain aggro on all mobs and bosses even in the face of massive AoE spam attacks. The Prot must lead the way for the group and pay close attention to his hp/mp, his buffs, party buffs, bosses buffs/debuffs, and the healers' hp/mp. So I wouldn't call it being a "lazy-mode" tank I call it being a true tank whereas a Warrior is more of an off-tank trying to fulfill the role of main tank. They are in no way close to even in tanking ability.
Also, Protectors do have a much higher defense than Warrior's, heck 3 stacks of CS buff is an automatic +150 def and that will only increase with each level.
First i want to thanks to Ashaw
Dude this guide help me a lot but put me a doubt to between protector and assassin
I guess i'll protector because of my experience (isn't much but i've try some mmos) in other mmo's i must of the times go to warrior or tank and only in my first and second mmo (i still play my first mmo sometimes) i had try assassin so i guess is better Protector now and if i don't like go to assassin
I only read the first 2 pages so if i said something which are allready in another page in the topic please tell

Now high end instances, I was in a party with a prot and warrior, don't know their trees (should've asked

Well everyone as there preferences
illiterate?? is that like stupid or semething?
Protectors = High HP, Medium-High Defence, Damage Dealer, Slow Attack speed

Cause I don't care.
