My opinion, having characters on a invis background is good, generally you cant go wrong with it, but you still need a background of some sort to tie it all together, eg with mine, most of mine is blank space, but i have the black background to tie my images together, and its all in the same overall color scheme.
Edit: TO modify your sig, id probably change the text so its the color of his beard, or the brown on his arms. Most likely since your using a bold text id make it a beard color with a internal glow/outline of his armor color with something like a white background with a border to tie it all together.
The background would probably best suit his shoulder to the cuff of his wrist.
I edited my sig to make it more seasonal, what do people think? xD

I like it more than your current one. The fuzzy background doesn't seem to match the character, in my opinion. <_>
ANYWHO... worked on mine a bit... and added some text. It also still doesn't pop for me with the color of it.. I'm going to play with it tmmrw.
With or without text?... Not many decent text options with Paint.net. T_T
