I have a Silver subscription for CO and I've been thinking of going Gold recently. I have no problems making the payments for the game, but I do have a little problem. I stopped playing CO for a couple months and the game now warns me that my graphics card is no longer capable of running on normal settings, so I have to play on lowered settings. The settings aren't a problem, the graphics still look great, but the game will crash, depending on how active the game is or where I am (i.e. - tried talking to a Tailor to alter something on my costume and the game crashed). I have a Mac, I play through WineSkin, and I've read that it's reliable for Mac users, which it has been for me lately. I can still play effectively, everything runs smoothly, my only problem is the lowered settings, that I mentioned, crashing my game. It doesn't happen often, maybe once a day; It's just annoying.
I guess my question is... Is it worth it now, given the lifespan of this game so far, to go Gold, or should I continue my Silver membership?
I'm mostly asking because 1) I'm not a big fan of restrictions (character design, archetypes, costume pieces, in-game options, etc.) and 2) I don't want to start paying for a game that is eventually going to randomly die out, much like CoX did that fateful day.
Every game will die eventually. That's just entropy.
However, when PWE had a round of layoffs recently, CO went unimpacted; the words of one unnamed insider were that it takes so little to "keep CO chugging along" that there's no percentage in cutting it. We're just sitting here making more money than we cost.
If you like the game and think you'd get more out of it with a Gold sub, go for it. I went LTS last year, and haven't regretted a moment of it. (Although I really do need to get a couple more toons to 40 - I'm running low on character slots!) If you're going to be disappointed if there's nothing really big, along the lines of a STO Season, coming down the pike, then don't get the sub, because one thing we're all pretty sure of is that we're only getting incremental improvements at best. (Happens I like the game the way it is, so that's not an issue for me.)
"Science teaches us to expect -- demand -- more than just eerie mysteries. What use is a puzzle that can't be solved? Patience is fine, but I'm not going to stop asking the universe to make sense!"
My main reason for asking is because, I come from CoX. I played from beginning to end. I rolled characters religiously, playing every AT, and had an amazing time doing so. I started playing CO because I missed the creating superhero characters. That is literally my only reason for getting into this game. Now, I know that this game is nothing like CoX. I know nothing can ever replace what the game meant to me, but what this game is and for it does have to offer, it is, by far, the best substitution in it's absence.
Another question, while I have you all here: Once I go Gold, will I have access to all powers and AT's at character creation? I would love to roll an electric blaster toon and a tank-like character to revive my lovely Saiyan-inspired CoX toon.
Yup, access to all powers aside from the 3 you unlock by leveling an Automaton to 40.
I think the character slots and costume options that unlock by going gold is worth the subscription, and don't forget about the monthly stipend.
If the game is warning you that your graphics card is too old or whatever, but it's running fine at the higher settings, then just ignore it and put your settings back. No reason to lower them if you're having no problems. It's possible that the game just doesn't recognize the Mac hardware properly.
Former die-hard CoXer here, so I feel ya. I went gold after a week of testing, because the restrictions were too tight for me.
And, yeah you get everything right away (well, except for the Reawakened stuff), with, of course, the "have to have two from this set or three from any set" restrictions.
It really does open up a "whole new world" in this game. Just the "free character slot for hitting 40" alone has been worth it to me, and there's so much more.
EDIT: Fine, Biff, say everything I was before I finished typing!
Oh, I did want to add that I spent over a year and a half with a low-end graphics card and it was awful. Finally got around to spending very little (I think it was $25 or $35) on a mid-ranged card and it also made a world of difference, look and performance-wise.
If you want to take the leap for the long run I say wait until we hear what the dev team is going to do next. If its promising and you want to stick around for a couple years, get a lifetime. Its worth it especially when it goes on sale.
Basically reward Cryptic by buying subs when they do something that you are interested in.
So, is a lifetime subscription exactly what it sounds like? I pay a set price and I play forever or... How does it work?
And I wouldn't say that my graphics card is bad. Maybe you're right, maybe the game just doesn't recognize the Mac's software, seeing as how the game doesn't have a designated Mac launcher. I've played WoW on this Mac before and it ran fine, never once crashed. Not at the best graphics, but above average, same as CO now.
Sidenote: I've taken this Mac to a local Simply Mac store and they had their tech examine it and they told me that there is nothing I can do to upgrade this MacBook, unless I just flat out buy a newer one. I got this one from my school and they put the most up to date hardware into it. Unless I buy a newer MacBook Pro, I cannot upgrade it. Sucks, but it's good at the same time.

Yep, lay out the $300 (or $200 if you catch a (very rare) sale), and you get to play for your life or the life of the game, whichever comes first, with all Gold bennies plus a few.
(Yes, I was a bit flippant there, but we have lost a few players over the years - most notably AngelOfCaine, who's memorialized with a statue in the park just west of RenCen. It's a monument to all the fallen players, but it's in the likeness of Caine's best-known character, Crimson Bolt, with angel wings.)
"Science teaches us to expect -- demand -- more than just eerie mysteries. What use is a puzzle that can't be solved? Patience is fine, but I'm not going to stop asking the universe to make sense!"
Oh, sorry, I missed where you said it was a MacBook. Yeah, "integrated graphics" really can't be upgraded (or rather, it's pointless and it's cheaper to get a new one). It's why I gave up on laptops, et al. I want something I can pull parts out of and replace.
Lifetime is an indefinite monthly subscription, 16 character slots to start plus the usual free slot for every character that you get to level 40) and all the veteran rewards up front.
So if you are thinking of wanting to go lifetime (try subbing for a month to see if you like what you have with a subscription card you can find in stores) and are still cautious, the wait to see what comes next may be worth it.

Yeah, if you're thinking of going Lifetime, it would be best to wait and see what the new guard of devs have planned for the game.
In the mean time you can try out a month or two of Gold.

I see. Well, I probably wouldn't do that. I mean, ideally, it's a good deal, but I don't see myself shelling out that much just for a lifetime sub. I like to have control of what I pay-to-play. I'd probably go for a monthly sub.
Thanks for the help, all! I'll look into upgrading to a monthly Gold sub.

Unless I've been out of the loop for too long, MacBook Pros have actual graphics cards, but they're built in a way that you can't swap parts out. You can really only upgrade RAM and hard drives. Technically the graphics card is "integrated" but it's not in the way most people think of the term.

I never regretted my lifetime subscription, and it's a steal when it goes on sale. Either way, I'm sure you'll like Gold. There's some finagling you'll have to do with your current characters in order to play as them once you go Gold, but I think Jon is better versed in that area

Oh, I'm FAR FAR more likely to be "out of the loop" than you. I never was much of a hardware guy.
I was crossing my fingers replacing my desktop's card, hoping I didn't screw it up.

No, you're right, they are. But the way that mine was built, it actually has 2 different cards in it. I go to a pretty predominant art school and all the MacBook Pros they give to the students are built with 2 different cards, as a bypass for all the different programs they have us using. One card gives us the highest quality imagery for graphic design while the other card can switch on automatically for the greater 3D arts and simulations.
It's weird but I don't funk with any of it.
As far as the RAM and hard drive, I have 8GB of RAM (2 4GB sticks) and I have the chance to upgrade to 16GB but due to money restraints, I haven't been able to yet. I can get the RAM straight from Apple, so it'll be the same brand. The hard drive as well, I can upgrade, with caution, but for what I have now, about 750GB, I'm good.
Oh man, I would never pay Apple prices for RAM. Brand doesn't really matter, as long as it's the same specs that the computer wants, you're okay with mixing Apple brand with some off-brand. I don't think you need an upgrade for this game, though, but in the future, just use a site like Crucial.com to upgrade.
Well, last time I checked, it was about $100 for an 8GB stick. I don't know if the price has changed since then (probably not, let's be real), but I was looking at $200 and change for 16GB total.

I agree on never having regretted getting my LTS. And I got it a day or so after it first went up for sale before launch.
The one thing I like the most about my LTS is that there's no "lost money" if I take a several month break from the game. And I'm not losing access to characters nor do I have to spend $10 or whatever the monthly cost is if I want to play for a week.
But trying the game with a 1 month subscription is probably a good idea before comitting to a LTS. The upfront cost is definitely not for everyone, even when it's down to the pre-launch $200. But if you really enjoy the game and Freeform access + free character slots for hitting level 40 LTS is probably worth it, if only to put away those annoyances that can pop up with a recurring subscription.
Funny how I won't think about dropping money for an X1 but when it comes to this LTS, I'm thinking about it.
Anywho, next question: Obviously, I have a Silver sub, but I just subbed for a Gold. How long does that take to activate? I got an email stating that I changed my payment methods but my account has yet to change to Gold. Anyone know about how long that takes to change? In-game, it still says I'm Silver, and on the website, I still get the message asking me if I want to go Gold.
1. top right hand corner of the character page- should say gold. When it says it there, your account is now gold.
2. characters (already in use)will be listed as silver, they can be changed to gold using one of the buttons.
NOTE: you get 1 free change from AT to FF or a different AT. That's total per slot.
But as long as you stay the same AT, you can change it from gold to silver and back as much as you want.
3. mine took 2 days, waiting for c/card to transfer.
now Between 2 accts 90 level 40's and counting.
:biggrin:I love the free slots.
Go gold if you want freefoms a lot, but don't go LTS.
Now, CO might not be shut down soon, but the game isn't some first grade title with a lot of development incoming in future.
So, look at the game now, be sure it will always be in the same place, never any better or any worse in terms of content and player population, then ask yourself it it's worth the price of LTS.

24 hours and my account still hasn't changed to Gold yet. I guess it might take a day or 2, depending on how long it takes for my CC to clear.
Don't understand why it would take so long for my CC to clear, though, as I've done business with Cryptic before, back when they owned CoX. But, whatevs. Maybe I'm just nitpicking.

It has to clear your bank. And unfortunately, not all banks in the US process charges on weekends. Probably be Monday.

I can only speak for myself but as a fellow ex-CoXer I say yes. In fact if possible go lifetime when the first sale comes up (but not before). As many already mention the freedom of free-form is enough to do so. And it looks like, for various reasons this game is going to stay put for a while.
Anyway it's your choice. if you like it then go for it (and join the rest of us goldies and lifers). I think you wont be disappointed if you did.
Comments
My complaints about the game aside, this game will not be closing anytime soon. The Devs have stated it is profitable enough to keep the lights on.
If you enjoy the game and plan to make freeform characters, then go gold.
