Gamepad question

neverwinter1973neverwinter1973 Posts: 203 Arc User
I've been playing the game with mouse and keyboard which is pretty good and now wondering how the default gamepad option works.

I'm gonna make a new character and start from scratch using the gamepad.

Has anyone here played DC Universe Online with a gamepad ? It's simply amazing and I'm wondering how Champions Online default gamepad works in comparison.

This should be interesting. Overall, how does any vet gamepad players feel about the default gamepad option for this game ? Good ? Bad ? Decent ?

Open for discussion if you like.

The gamepad works. Default settings are okay, but to get the most out of it I always used something like Xpadder or JoyToKey to customize the settings.

If you're expecting an experience anything close to DCUO, you're in for a good swift kick in the Wonder Twins. DCUO's core combat mechanics were designed for controller first, then mapped to keyboard & mouse, which is the opposite of CO's design. This game is still rooted in tab-targeting and a big-ish power tray for all of your attacks and actions.

That said, Cryptic was originally working on an Xbox 360 port way back in the Don't Tell NCSoft We're Working For Marvel days, so the built-in controller support is reasonable.

Choose your enemies carefully, because they will define you / Make them interesting, because in some ways they will mind you
They're not there in the beginning, but when your story ends / Gonna last with you longer than your friends

It might be because of my gamepad (Logitech Dual Action) but the default mappings are a bit wonky. Still, once you set the mappings for your style the gamepad works well for CO.

Er... I think there's one power that isn't compatible with the gamepad, I dunno which one, though. On the other hand, some of the powers really benefit from gamepad play (Button mashing for blasts and combos, Plasma Beam, period <3).

I use a controller (xbox) and prefer to. But the default settings? Nope. I never use the default settings. In fact, I don't think I even tried the default settings and just remapped everything right away.

There are some things I need / prefer to use the mouse for. The tutorial boxes cannot be closed with the controller even though there is a cancel function that works most other places. Sorting through my inventory is done with the mouse. Since I changed the interact key to 'spacebar' sometimes I simply use that instead of the controller. When you die, the popup box for rez can be closed, so I mapped release to the keyboard. I see this as a bonus so that I don't accidentally release during something like Grav, Warlord, etc instead of rez. However, if you die right as you are preforming an attack, you could accidentally release anyway. But I've only done that once or twice in all these years.

Strafing Run is irritating to use with the controller. I got it to work once, but have no idea how since I was just mashing all the buttons.

Have they made it possible to remap your keys in NW yet? Last time I tried it (when I swore off trying it ever again for this very reason), the particular keys and mouse-keys were fixed and unalterable. And I didn't care for them, as they were anything but intuitive for me.

Yeah there are a few people who swear by the controller. I'll use it when I've been playing other games with it and it's still plugged in when I run Champs. I find the default key setup to be fine. Give it a try, you'll probably like it.

Welp, from what I am experiencing thus far, I'm able to set up my controller and map the keys exactly like DCUO if I wish. Now the combat itself....well....yeah...DCUO's animations seem more fluid and of higher quality. But as a whole, the gamepad operation itself isn't bad at all for this game, in my opinion.

I personally find the controller to be fine. I've been playing CO with a controller the vast majority of the time for nearly 6 years. The only things I even have custom keybinds for are pet controls for my pet master builds and that's all done using a keybind file as opposed to third-party key mappers.

How do you use the device tray with the gamepad ? You know, like the healing device packs or the might device packs or the resource boost.

Here's a good start for remapping the controller: http://co-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=51461

I have powers mapped to the two triggers and the dpad, works out pretty well. You might also want to look into being able to attack without having to target: http://co-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=89337

And another thing to check out is the program xpadder as it comes with some neat options (turbo buttons being one).

It's a combination of pressing Right on the D-Pad, then a button, e.g. on a Xbox controller:

    D-Pad Right + X: Device 1
    D-Pad Right + Y: Device 2
    D-Pad Right + B: Device 3
    D-Pad Right + A: Device 4

I can never remember what the 5th Device slot is, so I put the Teleport to MC there, I click it.

    ---

    I have a helpful preference I found. It's on your Power Tray, slots 4, 5, and 6.

Those slots are usually activated by a combination of Left Trigger + a button. They also work if you hold down Both Triggers, the command for Block. So usually I put my Active Defense and Healing powers there, so they're easy to activate while Blocking.

It's just a setup I found intuitive, to Block and use an Active Defense or Conviction, etc.

Ah okay. I got another 1 for ya. How do you target non hostile objects with the gamepad ?

I know sometimes you have to target canisters or rubble to free victims trapped underneath it. I use the mouse left click and cursor for that. I haven't figured out how to do this with the gamepad if it can even be done.

On the D-Pad, press up when you're close enough to interact with it.

Press the D-Pad up again when you're holding something and you just want to chuck it away.

If there are multiple options, like choosing where to go on the Jet, you can press up or down to scroll.

You can turn off "Never auto-target Objects" in your Control options, then auto-target will work on those objects as well.

You can also just use your mouse in those rare instances, since it will still be functional.

I think only the mouse works on certain things like people trapped under rubble but I will try again.

    Thanks for the reply.

Update: I think you're right. What do you have your maximum targeting distance set at ?

Reason for this question is, when I have never auto target objects off, at times, I will attack the objects instead of the enemy that is attacking me.

Hmmm, maybe if I switch yes to attack threatening enemies first that will fix this problem.

I play CO with the Xbox 360 pad. Works perfectly. Champions Online was meant to be a Xbox 360 game so so gamepads are just epic here.
