October signifies the rising of the Blood Moon, a time when dark magick rises throughout the world and the forces of evil gain in power. One such is the mysterious force referred by its followers as "The Nightmare", that which Lord Nightmare draws power from. During this time, Nightmare and his cultists become more active and dangerous with some members even transfiguring into creatures of pure terror whose appearance can be described as "unspeakable". Nightmare, eager to begin his conquering of the City of the Future, comes to the heroes with a challenge: Impress him or face destruction. And such marks...

THE 13 DAYS OF NIGHTMARE

A series of quick, one Category costume contests that occur once a day starting October the 19th and ending October the 31st, contestants will create costumes and receive prizes that (for the most part) are thematic with the category save for 3 days. There will be ONE Winner who receives the prize of the day and 2 runner ups that will receive a consolation prize of 50G apiece. Auras, Devices, and TPs will be allowed only if they do not detract from the costume and actually work thematically. The time is 8pm Server Tim, at a currently unset location.

DAYS!

  1. Rise of the Undead Heroes The Bloodmoon brings the bodies of those who died in the Battle of Detroit to Life, and so Nightmare challenges you to make an undead version of your Main.

  2. Grimdark The air is dark, the stench of death all around. It is perfect for the Grimdark Legion to come out and fill the streets. The Nightmare challenges you to create the most stereotyped Grimdark character you can. HOWEVER, Redblacking is an instant DQ.

  3. J-Horror The Japanese... If their comedy doesn't touch your sanity, their horror will. The Nightmare wants to see some of the most disturbing tales brought to life. From Slit-Mouthed Woman to Aka Manto... any concept is allowed.

  4. Cosmic Ahh... Who says evil cannot stretch to the stars? With the new Cosmic Knight set coming, the Nightmare wants to see how well you can utilize them to create a defender (or Conqueror) of the Galaxy.

  5. Lovecraftian The Nightmare is a great lover of the works of H. P. Lovecraft. Craft a creature based on his tales, but do be creative. Your future God doesn't want to see one million Cthulhus.

  6. Cultists Without his Cultists, the Nightmare wouldn't be where he is today. Create what you think a loyal servant of the Nightmare would look like.

  7. Classic Horror Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolfman.. all still hold to this day in the Horror Genre. Create a costume based on these and other staples of the Horror Genre. And who says it must be monsters? Hitchcock and similar are welcomed as well!

  8. Caliga Clones BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The Nightmare simply wants you to insult his insignificant leader by crafting parody clones of him.

  9. Creepypasta/Internet Horror While the Nightmare is very much unamused with these "Creepy Pastas" or "Horror Games", he does enjoy the terror others feel when they read or play them. Craft a costume based on popular creepypastas/games. BUT DO NOT DARE BRING WESKER. Nightmare despises him.

  10. Sentai/Mechs A more lighthearted Category. The Nightmare wants to see tributes to one of his favorite series.

  11. Folklore Long ago, many were spooked not by demons or vampyres.. but by supposed Ghost Cowboys and Witches. From the Headless Horseman to the Black River Witch (Arabic tale), these ideas haunted men and made them wary when out alone. Craft a costume based on Folktales, be them American, European, Middle-Eastern, South American.. etc.

  12. Liberated Robots We have repelled Mechanon, but his work can still be felt. Create a Liberated version of any robot you can think of.. from toys to toasters.

  13. Space Terrors! Xenomorphs, Vashta Nerada, Mole Men from the Planet Qugar 2. Space is full of mystery and wonder, so it's no wonder people have crafted horrors to occupy it. Create a costume for aliens or the like that may one day feast upon your flesh.

And on Midnight of Halloween, there shall be one final CC

The Bride of Nightmare Being a cult leader and supervillain bent on world domination gets lonely. Therein, the Nightmare desires a bride! SO craft one that would greatly compliment him in terms of looks and personality!

So having read him, I'd think Lovecraft, especially in his later science fiction stuff, might say there is a lot of overlap between categories 4, 5 and 13 than some might think.

But pointless quibble aside, this sounds like lots of fun! I hope to enter a few candidates!

Suppose I need to be a little clearer! Cosmic would be costumes like Thanos, the Skrull, Galactus, Star*Guard, Lantern Corp... so on.

For Lovecraft, I always forget that he wrote science fiction NOT pertaining to the Elder Gods/Outer Gods/Old Ones. >.> But Space Terrors would be more like Aliens, Pitch Black, B-Movie Horror, etc.. Ya?

I'm saying that Galactus, Day the Earth Stood Still, Pitch Black, Event Horizon, Alien and many other science fictional horror themes can be traced straight back to "The Colour Out of Space," "The Whisperer in Darkness," "From Beyond" and The Shadow Out of Time. Much of Lovecraft's later science fiction-y stuff reads like straight up flying saucer abductee stories--even including missing time and horrifying surgical procedures.

I mean what does Galactus represent? Cosmically huge alien power that sweeps humanity aside like bugs. That's a game ol' Cthulhu, that ancient priest of bigger, more awful space gods, knows very well. Back in the 20s and 30s, the genres weren't so sharply defined as they are now.

But I'm not really arguing the point, honestly. You're right too. In modern times these early subtle differences have become more pronounced and really do merit separate categories. Genres spread and subdivide, like evolution.
