Ok I know this is gonna sound like a noob question, but when I have a freeform character and I notice there are F7,F8,F9, and F10 buttons above my powers and when I click one of the its talks about roles and stuff, somebody please tell me what they are for?

Short answer: The F buttons allows a freeform to switch between setups of role, gear, block enhancer, passive, general power arrangements on the hotbar and choice of costume.

Edit: I assume it now also remembers your chosen aura per setup, but to be perfectly honest, I've completely forgotten to look on my character with multiple passives and therefore auras.

Those "build" buttons are a legacy thing from way back in beta. Originally, the powers tray was going to be limited to 7 powers and there would have been a wider choice of power selection for freeforms. However, due to constant nagging and whining, the developers caved in and expanded the powers buttons to the 14 that they are now, and the end result the build buttons became pretty much novelty with little use as the ability to produce variety in separate builds is quite limited.

The original intent was to have various builds and options for builds that allowed you to change your role for situations on the fly instead of being shoehorned into a specific build set, like the game currently is now. The game was also balanced around just having 7 powers at a time as well.

At most the builds button can be used for is changing costumes, roles and gear, but other than costumes there is little value in changing gear and role changing is also of little value except maybe from a main role into hybrid if you feel it would do better.

We've requested dual builds for freeforms for a while to give them more worth but it has been said they aren't confident in the cost to change the engine to support that type of system. It would be nice for some of us that would like alternatives or those who want a PvP build and their PvE build, and even better for those who have concepts that have their character changing forms to represent such a change.

So short answer, the build buttons really don't have much use other than novelty or quick costume changes.

Probably the most common use of the build functions, that I have seen, are:

A character with two passives. The ability to switch on the fly from tank role with defiance to ranged DPS with Quarry for example.

One button costume changes where each build slot has the same build but different costumes.

'Caine, miss you bud. Fly high.

I'll agree that the builds thing is great for quick switching from dps role to healer, etc. and for having multiple passives without having to hunt them down and drag them into place after swapping. However there are other uses as well. Personally I also use the builds ability for characters that have multiple identities.

Example: Moral Compass - she is a human that has an angel and a demon sealed into her. One build has a costume that looks 100% angel with large white wings and white / gold colors dominant in her costume and a bright divine glow, she has a brightly glowing golden halo over her head, and the costume itself is sort of 'prude' in the amount of skin covered up. A second build has a mix of angel / human with much smaller wings that are greyed down a bot, the white is gone from her costume and instead she has a mix of light yellow and drab brown in her costume which reveals slightly more skin and the glow is much more reigned in, meanwhile the brightly glowing halo has completely lost its glow and faded to a dirty yellow. A third build has a mix of human / demon. In this build her costume reveals quite a bit of skin and the costume colors become a mix of brown and red, her wings become an even darker shade of grey, and her halo becomes a dark red. A fourth build has a costume that looks 100% demon with large black wings with black and red colors dominant in her costume and a deep demonic red glow. She has a black halo with red spikes sticking out of it. And her costume has become very revealing and a coiled black whip has attached to her hip.

I could have simply made the costumes and left the builds out of it. But by using the build system it enabled me to also change the powers available to each version, and also to change simultaneously their auras and power colors. This lets me have a bright yellow for the angel, orangey-yellow for the half, a deep red for the demon, and a orangey-red for the half. It also means I can use the Shadow Form aura for the demon and the Seraphim or other auras for the angel and the halfies.

By linking all of these changes to the build, I can then simultanously switch everything at once instead of having to swap them one at a time.

    So still no use.

These days they're used to accidentally remove all your equipment. Some people can make use of two or three of those things but by and large they're not good for much.

    New effects for old powers

More EXP for Adventure Packs please.

Yah, I also use them, although only on a few characters, to switch between two passives in order to go for a tankier approach, or a more damage-oriented approach. However, since I can't toggle Crippling Challenge or Challenging Strikes to be on or off of a power, this doesn't have quite as much utility as it could.

I may design an FF build more like one of the earlier posters mentioned, where it plays and feels almost like two completely different heroes in one body, and only slot powers that have CC/CS on the tank side, and only slot powers that DON'T have CC/CS on the DPS or support side. I do often end up feeling like many of the powers available to my FFs are superfluous, as I usually find myself using the same 2-4 powers in some sort of combo or chain. There's room to build a split hero, I just haven't really come at it seriously yet.
