How many of yall are sportin' the....

Notice a lot of re-designs (particularly the New 52/Injustice) are ditching the underwear over pants look. I guess they feel it's a bit goofy looking, but how about you guys? Do you generally go for a somewhat classic hero look, an urban defender style, some mystic/tech armor, etc.?

I always thought the underwear over the pants was ridiculous and I'm definitely glad they changed it up.

As for me, I always go for modern and practical.

I can definitely see the arguments against it, but sometimes on an esthetic level I like the way different-colored trunks break up otherwise monocolored outfits, like Superman's classic costume. That was of course the prototype for all the super costumes which followed, and was based on the tights of circus performers and wrestlers. On that level it actually is practical -- if you're wearing skintights for freedom of movement (and to show off your physique), the trunks give your junk some added support and modesty.

One of my guys wears nothing but a towel around his waist. Even won a Costume Contest once.

Unless I'm doing a parody of a superhero, I tend to stay away from the undies of power. I tend to lean more toward straight up tights rather than sticking a super thong on the outside. The leotard, on the other hand, can look pretty nice and I often pair that with tights underneath.

"Over the pants" underwear was used mostly in the old days as a color break (as mentioned). I use it sometimes and sometimes not, depending on the effect I'm going for.

Um... kind of? I mean there's Kagami.... who literally gains her super powers from magical panties, and she also wears a leotard in one of her costumes for fanservice.

Does a full body suit count as either of those? you know, the skin tight outfit that covers you from neck down and includes shows and gloves as part of the suit?

Generally I tend away from the "traditional" superhero outfits because they're kind of boring to look at and they don't express very much about my character's story or personality; there are exceptions of course.. everyone likes a nice leotard now and then :3

Ya I hear ya; think I settle for more full body tights and the occasional leotard. If I give someone the brief treatment, it's usually through a mech suit design (subligars) or some monster modesty (briefs, but no pants.) Heh, makes me think of this...

I never go for underpants over tights.

On the other hand, most of my 32 toons have at least one classic superhero spandex outfit, usually a couple. If I were a superhero, I would wear something stretchy, tough, and breathable, like a full outfit made of underarmor stuff.

Most of my characters do the full tights deal, but I don't like to break up the costume with the over-undies or belts, even. I like a clean, continuous design going top to bottom.

For female characters I usually break it up to show some midriff, but when I don't, I still usually avoid using belts or over-undies.

Sometimes it's a matter of balance with the rest of the costume, especially accessories.

When Prime had bulky boots, gloves, and shoulder pads, I felt that kit needed a belt, or else her torso would look undefined. Now that I've switched to various disappears-when-black parts and IDF tricks to represent force fields, the belt had to go because it broke the clean lines of her silhouette. (That's also why I'm ditching the robot samurai "skin" and going back to side stripes.)
Choose your enemies carefully, because they will define you / Make them interesting, because in some ways they will mind you
They're not there in the beginning, but when your story ends / Gonna last with you longer than your friends

Hmm, taking stock of my characters.

    The No(es):
*Impervious, no. He wears 'regular' clothing that is zone appropriate.
    *Destiny, no. Pants and blouse.
*Second Hand, no. Pants and jacket.
*Art Man, no. He wears a full suit. While there are patterns and a belt to break up the line, he is without an underwear pattern.
*Blink, nah. If you were to think of her as a real person, then she is wearing a white full-body-stocking-armor, a blue long-sleeve Lycra pull-over dress, a white leather belt to keep the dress in place, blue thigh-high leather boots, a blue cloth cape and a blue cloth hood. All reasonable for armor, comfort and concealment.

    The maybe(s):
*Blueprint, maybe. He wears a black full bodysuit and then his powered armor over top of it, but he does have a crotch plate. So, maybe metal underwear counts?
*Her Shadow, maybe. She is a liquid metal robot that molds her body to the uniform of her kind, which is very bikini-esque, but if you think about it... she's actually naked. So, I dunno wear she fits : )
*Zap, maybe. She wears a full-body metallic suit that she controls with the magnetism aspect of her powers, but she breaks up the bodysuit line with a windbreaker. I call it a maybe, because I did it to accentuate her rear-end (which is perfect). Thus, I did it for fanservice (mine), which is really what these tropes are about.

    The yes:
*The Parasite, absolutely, right down to the letter of the trope! Not only for parody purposes, but Doctor Douglas (the real Parasite) is from that era and he needs sexuality from his host to draw attention away from the Ankh, which holds his consciousness.

Edit: Oh, and the Parasite is below, in their Leotard of Power.

I've always hated the underwear over tights look, I'm so glad most new designs in general don't use it.
I have only 2 chars so far, one is a superhero, and he has a (more modern looking) tights uniform. the other one is a werewolf and he uses semi regular clothes.

I always had a neutral attitude towards the "undies on the outside" thing. It works if you can make it work, ya know?

When I first created him, Lupine wore nothing but briefs, if that counts. :P Normally, I go for modern/urban/street-level looks, occasionally touching the tights.

EDIT: Oops, almost forgot: Thunderous Thunder Thighs is rocking the leotard!

Personally I never liked the "underwear of power", most of my characters tend to wear street clothes and/or battle armor or some sort...

Of course, some of my "battle armor" tends to show more skin then truly practical, but that wasn't the actual question.

Exactly, it's all tools in the toolbox. I wouldn't throw a tool away simply because I don't use it much.

Hm i dont know, not a fan of the undies over tights.. but tights themselves are fine, i tend up mix it up with a few parts.. i can never seem to ever make just a 'full tights' hero without chucking on some sort of armor on them, it just isnt my style.

For me.. i go Power Armor all the way. XD
