New looks for old powers

I love that Cryptic is against, for the most part, pay to win. They don't sell new powers and that's great. But since they wont necessarily get more money for new power sets I can understand they would be less excited about adding new powers to the game. What I'm thinking though is that, for the most part, what people are looking for first in new powers is a new look with new effects being secondary. I think Cryptic could sell new looks for the already existing powers and make a tidy profit while pleasing the customers.

The new looks don't even necessarily have to fit exactly into the old themes either, thought they should have at least a minimal, hand-wave-able similarity so that effects can in some way match appearance. For example, new looks for Electricity should probably look like some form of energy and not like rocks.

I'd be willing to pay 1500 Q for the ability to apply this to any character (and I'd eventually end up buying them all), 200 for a device or other item that changes a particular sets look for only the character it's equipped to (but I'd probably only buy one to allow my space man to shoot energy beams from Munitions powers), and none at all for a power by power item that only one character could use.

If you go the 'access by account' way rather than the 'by character' rout I would suggest that a pull down menu be added to the top of the training menu. For example, at the very top of the Force set would be a menu allowing you to choose from "Classic" and "Krackle" force powers.

Some suggestions.

Microwave Radiation:
---Electricity
replace the usual lightning theme with something that looks like the sparks thrown off by Millennial Flight. Sheets of sparks replace Chain Lightning while sparks raining down from the sky replace Lightning Storm's normal appearance.
Sold Separately, Electric Slide travel power. Much like slide travel power from the Power Armor review except arcs of lightning suspend the character from the ground.

Magma Fire:
---Fire
Replace the normal fire effects with glowing globs of red hot lava. Fire ball now looks like a dark with glowing-cracks ball of magma. And Rain of fire could look like hot lava spewing up from the ground rather than fire falling from the sky. Instead of fire-like effects flickering upward from most effects have drops of glowing magma dripping down from the powers.
Sold Separately, Magma Tunneling travel power. The character sinks into a pool of lava before tunneling and springs up on a burst of magma when emerging.

Krackling Force:
---Force
Force powers have an aura and "Kerby Dots" much like Power Flight. Even players who don't now have any Force toons but do own Power Flight will probably buy this set.
Sold Separately, Power Teleport travel power: The character disappears and reappears in a blast of light and Kerby dots.

Water Control:
---Ice
Ice powers now look like blasts of water. Wall of ice looks like geysers and shatter looks like a huge splash. And Avalanche would be a huge area of geysers instead of ice falling from the sky.

Sonics:
---Wind
Give Wind powers a sonic look of concentric rings. Gust could look like a burst of concentric, translucent rings. While the Wind Breath will look like the character is screaming. Hurricane would be fast moving rings spreading from the character and Air Elemental could look like a constantly exploding Sonic mine that Viper sometimes uses.

Most of the technology set I have no idea for but...

Energy Shot:
---Munitions
Replace bullets with glowing energy blasts a bit like the Wrist Bolter's appearance. Have the Rocket Launcher fire a cannon ball of energy and the Grenade go off like a burst of plasma.

The melee powers of Martial Arts is also hard to alter but perhaps you could give auras to the weapons, or around the hands and feet for Unarmed while attacking. Maybe the blades could drip blood when drawn.

Aura Manipulation:
--- Telekinesis
For the ranged powers replace the weapon/blade theme with streams of wavering psyonic powers and globs of shifting telekinetic energy looking more like Ego Hold than a lance. Let us buy a telekinetic look that drops the mind-weapon theme.
Sold Separately: Psionic Weapon pack. More weapon sets for the melee aspects of the set. Some axes, more swords, maybe a whip or two.

Telepathy isn't something I've even gotten out of Westside with so I have no ideas for the set.

Lightning Weapon:
---Heavy Weapons. Cover the weapons with an electric like aura and replace the fire-like effects with lightning-like effects.
Sold Separately, Weapon Flight. With one arm extended forward the character flys with his weapon drawn and held ahead of him/her.

Quarts:
---Earth. Instead of dirty rocks have the character wield chunks of translucent crystal. For some characters this will allow the player to mix Ice powers and Earth powers under a similar appearance.
Sold Separately, Dust Teleport. The character shatters into a cloud of dust (maybe a bit like how Sandman got around in Spider-Man 3) and reappears in a smashing of stone.

Explosive Fists:
---Might. Something like the Visualizers that we get sometimes. Each attack results in an explosion.
Sold Separately, Rampage travel power. Based on Athletics but with a heavy, thundering theme rather than a graceful acrobat. The forward running would be about the same but with heaver, stomping steps. The backward movement wouldn't be flips but rather a Thing-like hopping skip and the jump animation, both backward and forward, would be a bit like when you jump straight up with Super Jump. This would fit great with themes similar to the Thing, Rino, or Juggernaut. Superstrong characters who don't fly and are not known for great leaps or grace.

I don't have lot of ideas for most of the Mystic set. Maybe instead of the usual effects have "Magic Runes" instead of energy bolts. However...

Corruption:
---Infernal Supernatural. Instead of the glowing blasts of otherwordly energy each power would be replaced with ugly swarms of insects. The chain attacks could be replaced with nasty ropes of slime.

Sold Separately, Zombie stance. The zombie stance and animations are available from the costume creator. Also, maybe, add a travel power in the vein of Acrobatics but with a shuffling gate and clumsy, tumbling leap.

Power replacers were essentially this. They just screwed it up and made it part of the hard code instead of a separate thing.

This is a really great idea. Champions Online is acknowledged for its advanced customisation system and our priorities become how our characters look than how strong they are. Most players who take their gaming seriously on CO resorts to picking out random powers from random sets - so they could become well-built players, but they lose concept and theme.

My suggestions for Telepathy are customised mind auras. 679316-wqattack.jpg
In the same cartoon, Psylocke's telepathic aura resembled butterfly wings next to her eyes. It looked very personalised and reflective of the characters. Other suggestions include avatars (a psychic projection of the character's head) or just simply changing the texture of the power.

As for the Mystic set, it's a popular suggestion (and it was even implied once) for props and materials. We want staves, wands, magician hats and instead of obelisks we want books, skulls, candles, etc. I personally think the ruins are unattractive in the game (why I don't really play it) but if it looked like this Young-Justice-01x19-Misplaced-05-600x337.jpg then I'd be on that set all day! Magic circles are popular in anime, so that side of this demographic would probably like to cast Eldritch Blas with a magic circle in front of them.

Anyway, really great idea and I support it! /signed

/Signed. I like a lot of these suggestions.:)

    Personally, I know I'd dieee for (i.e):

-Psionic Reflective Shield - whether as a new power or FX replacer for a bubble/Block enhancer (preferably a new power :D).

    TKRPShield.gif

    - Telekinetic Eruption, NOT have a resulting Ego Form - maybe as a 2pt Advantage, trade that off for additional knockback(fair?)

    - A Tunneling-puddle-type travel power that really looked like water.

    watermimicry1.gifwatermimicry2.gif

    - Earth's Quicksand, also have a water-y look (maybe your arms/hands turning into water as well. ugh. that'd be awesome). Right now, color it as you might it's just so dull, dark and opaque that it can't pass for anything else.:(

To name a few. Just seeing how much the Auras/passives system allowed and contributed for customization, new characters, I mean, I really believe this kind of thing goes such a long way.:)

You have a wonderful picture of Emma. And Yes I very much agree with this idea. Hopefully we can either get something like this in the Aura's System OR an actual feature.

Love that also! I've done a few illustrations for Psiren (gearing up for a PRIMUS page) and have been trying to establish something like that, a power signature or psi mask of sorts. That's a great idea, absolutely it'd be a very welcome feature! /SIGNED

I've looked some stuff up and am now more up to date(ish). Thanks much for the heads up though, I could not be more excited to get back to playing! :) VIVA PSI!!!

PS: Maybe not the thread to say this, but I love the name it was given (or changed to). Didn't get what that part was about. Sounds perfect to me, even though I haven't been around much, that's my opinion. Anyways: super excited to try it out! :) [end of aside]

See you all in-game soon!

What would you think of a set for Force where all the powers look like the block from Power Armor? All the blasts and bubbles look like they're made of digital "shields"?

That'd be cool! But how would you envision powers such as "Crushing Wave" to look? In fact, It seems like this aura is only suited for the force fields in the set.

I've always wondered why they never gave the ability to change how powers look.

Some powers, thematically, work for characters, but look silly because they're not exactly what the theme is.

Palm blaster energy builder for power armor... Cool, they're laser beams. But they're so thin. I wanna shoot bricks of power.

For the most part the only difference between magic and technological powers is in the visual effects, right. I'm thinking we could get some good diversity by cross skinning some of those powers, though in some cases this suggestion will break a little from the theme of the thread by offering new weapons in addition to new visual effects, but since those could just as easily be sold in the package as well I'm going to go ahead and suggest them here.

    Medic:
    -- Celestial

Healing bomb, new look for Rebuke. The character winds up and throws healing grenade.

The EB is replaced with a gun attack much like the sonic blaster.

Celestial Conduit gets a gun and animation like Tractor beam.

Ascension, in addition to the normal effects temporally straps a couple of fixed, jet-like wings to your back instead of the angel like ones it gives now.

Generally give the whole set a Gadget feel.

    Artificer:
    -- Gadgeteering

New weapon models mostly here. Wands in place of guns for the pistol type attacks. Easy enough.

The rifle attacks are maybe more tricky though. I'm thinking staffs here. or the "shotgun stance" powers the character holds the staff under one arm, much like a they hold the guns now, but for the "rifle on the shoulder" attacks, instead the character stands much like when using Lightning Arc, holding the staff out a head of them, vertically with the blasts/beams projecting from the gem on the head.

Support Drones and Munitions Bots get new models too.

Drones are replaced by a couple faeries that fly around on butterfly wings, and when transformed become nasty little imps with staffs.

The bots are given a golem makeover. Turn them into short little rock dudes using the elemental earth costume set, but with one hand looking like a volcanic/stone cannon. When transformed they change into crystal and stone spires, the attacks don't emerge from any gun or cannon but rather seem to emerge from the crystal surface.

Orbital Cannon gets a ritual makeover too. Instead of a big laser coming from the sky, a magic circle draws itself under the target then a pillar of arcane power blasts up from the ground.

Just where ever possible give the set an arcane look. I don't think this set needs to deal with the Darkhawk powers, though.

I don't know if it would require building whole sets from scratch or if it could be mostly a copy paste operation, from the discussions of adding new emanation points I get the feeling it would be a huge pain, but I would extra love it to have the option of useing the entire Force set out of "ray guns".

Again, I'd like to restate I'm suggesting these additions as payed "power costumes", not freebee give me's.

Force Constructs: the powers look like transparent, glowing versions of objects.

    Force Bolts: (undecided)

    Force Blast: Fist

Force Eruption: An anarchist bomb appears around the character while the power is charged.

Force Snap: a big fly swatter appears behind the target and smacks them toward the character

Force Shield: change from a simple circle to a kite shield

Force Geyser: A stick of dynamite appears and goes off under the target

    Crushing Wave: dozens of baseballs

Containment Field: The target is held in a big fist

    Force Cascade: Big ram's head

    Force Detonation: (undecided)

It's not just ranged powers that could use some cosmetic allowances. The powers belonging to the Savage for instance. In game the Qularr often use the attacks from this set but if you look close you'll notice that theirs seem to be different and I don't mean the fact that the claw trails are usually greenish in color. I'm talking about the number of those trails. They only have two instead of the normal four. It is consistent with the number of fingers they would use to claw with. It would be nice to be able to do the same to our Savage builds and even alter the animation so they keep their hands closed during the strikes like the fighting claws animations. This would go great with the already existing clawed bracers included with some of the costume sets like the Nighthawk set, Serpent Armor set, and the Steelhawk set. Also a variant of this to allow the bladed arm wings included in the latter to be used as sword-like weapons would be too awesome for words.
