So I've been leveling my first FF, Glacia. She's my Ice Fairy inspired by Elsa from Frozen.
Currently I've been testing and trying to find a way to make an Ice Controller. I know I've seen someone running around with Ice Form and Manipulator. Is it possible to have a viable build?
I know that the only two holds are Ice Grenade and Ice Burst w/ Freeze Dirtbag, but what about the roots, like Ice Wall and Ice Cage, can they work with Manipulator?
afaik, ice roots will not be increased in duration w/ Manipulator because they proc from a separate entity (the ice objects), though ice cage can proc the toggle easily. You could make an Ice build based around setting up ice cages and shattering them for some burst dmg. Its def not the most efficient dps build out there, but it could be fun to play around with. Bonus is you can interrupt pretty often w/ Ice Cage's adv.
Obv you wanna pickup ice burst w/ the freeze adv, ice cage w/ adv, wall of ice, ice form, and shatter just to fit the primary theme. Frost Breath w/ adv to guarantee chill is also nice to boost shatter dmg. Prob want to gear mostly for Int since Manipulator and MSA scale w/ it- also some Dex for crit to proc cold snap, and either Con for more health, Ego for more dmg, or Pres for more healing and hold duration.
For another hold that's kinda close to the theme and can proc Manipulator, Twister is prob the best fit.
The shatter theme can work for trash/aoe just fine, but for bosses you'd prob want to keep Ice Blast w/ Hard Frost around so you still have decent single-target dmg against chilled targets- still using Ice cage/shatter occasionally to keep manipulator up, and frost breath to re-apply chill.
A conventional frost dps build or a shatter build using Concentration and not going for hold/root strength would fare better overall since control is rather lackluster in this game. But the ice controller concept could work, to a degree.
I can suggest a build, also collecting the nice ideas from flowcyto, above.
Basically you can rely on Ice Form, crits and Ranged damage role for DPS.
The controller aspect is taken care of with PRE, its specs and Manipulator.
The key power, for AoE, and procs of the spec is Ice Burst with adv.; it takes care of everything (AoE, Paralyze, Ice objects). The tap of ice breath for auto-chill and then the creation of ice objects/shatter is going to be the routine for normal solo situations.
For bosses see the specs section below.
SS: PRE for hold strenght and the nice specs. DEX for crits to feed Ice Form and overall dps. REC for energy. INT would do as well, but in this case I prefer REC but it's up to you.
Talents: I buffed EGO for additional DPS, but I could see going for CON for survivability.
Specs: the group utility is all in the specs. PRE/Sentinel/Overseer make the paralyze from Ice Burst a killer move, heavily debuffing the Boss (Vulnerability, Wither/Trapped/Sentinel Mastery). Personal and group healing is done through Sentinel Aura and Mastery.
Notes:
-healing-wise I choose Conviction (triggeers MSA) that has a small AoE heal with the advantage.
-The challenging strikes in Frost Breath are very useful in solo situations. In some missions you need to get the attention of mobs to save the NPCs. In a group situation, where you do not get the attention of the mobs is a small debuff.
That build looks like an awful lot of fun! Anybody test it (or something similar) yet to see how well it works? Man, I need to start leveling some of my babies.

Most things die quickly, but if they don't like in Gravitar or Warlord, I pop CoPD and alternate Ice Barrier and Masterful Dodge, as well as Ascension and Palliate for heals...
Ok as far as the controller route goes it's a bit more complicated than expected.
As always you can blame Manipulator for not proccing as it should, specifically Ice Cage works (and basically you can go to 8 stacks ASAP), but Ice Burst does not
Also Ice Burst has a huge cooldown, so INT, at least as a SSS, is a must.
Finally, Ranged Damage Role + Offensive Passive is more than enough damage to compensate for Manipulator instead of Concentration. Of course the control-oriented specs will make you lose on survivability and damage overall, but for solo content the controller aspect is more than enough, while for group content the added bonuses from the specs should compensate in part.
Right now the support aspect is taking over the control one, at least at higher lvls... I should fit in a stun, but I cannot find something that's on-theme and good. Suggestions?
