So, I went to my first ever Renaissance Fair. Honestly, I always kinda thought it'd be cool to see one, but I suppose it wasn't a high priority on my list like gorilla fighting or midget wrangling, so I've never gotten around to it.
So, I was shocked when I realized it wasn't a bunch of teenagers dressed like elves, neckbeards dressed like overweight pirates, and ugly women dressed as ugly women showing cleavage. Sure, those where there. But this is what I learned:
1- There's booze there. LOTS of booze. And you should have an awesome hand-crafted mug for this booze, as well as a belt thing to hold this booze vessel. I bought one, a wooden one- but it saw its share of beer. Not to mention, mulled wine and mead are awesome.
2- Costumes are awesome, but not required. At first I expected to get ribbed for not having a costume (none of us did in my trio), but on the contrary- a lot of people don't wear them; but the ones that do are more than happy to tell you how to go about getting one, what you should avoid when purchasing one, and how to stay warm. Seeing as now I'm sold, I'll be getting my costume together for next year- maybe sooner. I'm thinking 'Inquisitor', just so I can accuse everyone of heresy. I've already started making the list and ordering pieces.
3- The people couldn't be nicer. Everyone there is having a good time, and they'll tell you what to try and what to do. Even at the campsite, everyone was having a blast and sharing drinks and food. It was awesome, I've never felt more welcome.
4- It's not all for kids. Actually, where I was at- kids were kind of... encouraged to finish before 5 PM, because there are some raunchy comedians and poets, as well as plenty of drink flowing. I can honestly say that the campgrounds compared to Talladega's campsite parties, and by all means- google at your own risk.
5- I'm pretty good at throwing axes. Come at me, bro.
Anyway, I probably learned more than that- but, by all means, share your experiences if you have any. If you don't, I highly encourage you to go to one. They're a blast.
I've been a repeat visitor to the local rennaissance/medieval faire for the past few years and my first experience shattered a lot of the preconceptions I previously held about the events.
Last year I even got to attend without paying for a ticket, at the cost of having to wear a costume. Even though I looked like a dork I caught no flak for the many many mistakes I had made in putting the costume together. A couple of the vets pulled me aside and we fixed and even improved upon a few things. It was awesome to see so many genuinely helpful people. The only costume heckling I've ever seen take place was two years ago when a bunch of ******** teenage kids dressed up as evangelion and homestuck characters and made it a point to be public nuisances.
I plan on returning again next February. I also highly recommend everyone to visit one at least once in their lives.
hahaha nice. I remember my first renaissance fair. It was kinda the same as you described. And I loved the shows. Also I had to bow bfore the "queen". It was an overall good experience. Oh and I watched live jousting! That was way more violent than I thought.
Why I remember of the renaissance fair: Portable toilets, no place to wash hands, people eating poultry, pork, and beef with their bare hands.
Never again.
You don't carry hand sanitizer with you?
This one had normal restrooms and sinks, but being in the military I've kind of made it a habit to have a little bottle of hand sanitizer in my pocket.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. The Steampunk invasion of local Ren Faire (Bristol, outside of Kenosha, WI) is an annual trip for my family. We always have s great time. It's a rather amazing display of creativity.
