My guess is that Coulson really did die in New York, and somehow they 'uploaded' his psyche into the original Human Torch body, hence Agent Coulson = Vision.

Anyone?
It's a magical place, man.
My brother thinks he's a Life Model Decoy. I doubt he'd be Vision. I dunno though.
I reckon they brought him back somehow and did something to his memory system, Tahiti is a trigger word for him I reckon, since the way he responds is -always- the same.
But he could be an LMD, Fury is meant to have a lot of them. I dunno though, for an LMD he seems pretty insistent about finding out exactly what happened to him, but apparently "lacks the clearance".
As for AoS, loving the FitzWard and entire development, even IF I have to wait a week to see it, it's well worth it
On the other hand, he did die in the direct presence of one Norse god, with another nearby, and he died bravely in battle. Perhaps the "magical place" isn't really Tahiti???

The last time he said it, he hesitated before saying "magical." I don't think he did that before.
1) he's the vision....
2)LMD (although I'm not sold on this one...)
3)Dr. Strange? perhaps "rezzed" Coulson, and gives the good doctor a launch point for his movie in Marvel Phase 3?
4) and this one has no real evidence to back it up, just conjecture.... cloned? Like Peter Parker and Scarlet Spider?
and for the record, totally fan-gurling this show.. love it!!
1st thing, Coulson didn't die. Yes, Loki stabbed him. But Fury just used the opportunity to 'Avengers Assemble!', by showing the bloody cards and telling that Phil is dead, because every 'Avenger' liked him.
He is LMD, but not in the sense what comicbooks presents them. Coulson is actually an android, he's the original Human Torch, or rather the body (>wink<but not the Vision>wink<) which can be seen in Captain America movie, at the Science Fair/Stark Expo.
And Coulson has no idea that he isn't "real". Hense the memories of Tahiti and the girl with a cello. If you follow how he moves, speaks and the way he "acts", there is a bit of 'android' in there.
Marvel twists the lore in movies hard.
And he is the force that keeps Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. watchable.

In the episode FZZT Coulson is getting a physical and when it's time to draw blood, he gets out of it by saying he doesn't like being poked. Can't imagine though that someone making him bleed would blow the whole thing.
First Human torch was an android. perhaps testing the blood would give it away?
I'm just theorizing though, I've seen no real evidence that points to the Human Torch / vision connection other than... uhm.. wishful thinking?
either way, they've sold me so far. Even if joss whedon isn't writing every script, its his show and I'll stick with it.
He was kicking nazi assses with Invaders. http://marvel.wikia.com/Human_Torch
The original Human Torch, Jim Hammond, he actually had "blood" in his veins. He wasn't robotic android, more like synthetic human. Because of that, Vision is called an synthesoid.
The original Human Torch began his existence in 1939 in the laboratory of Professor Phineas T. Horton, one of the pioneers in the field of artificial intelligence and robotics. The culmination of Horton's research was an android who mimicked virtually all of the functions of a human being, including independent thought, but was composed entirely of synthetic materials.
In Captain America story with Baron Blood, Union Jack and others, they used his blood to heal Spitfire, she fought with the Invaders back in the war. The blood made her young and return her powers back. Whole story is in Captain America: War and Remembrance GN, was reading it just yesterday. So declining for the exam maybe something to do with him being synthetic and someone would notice it.
But hey, i'm just shooting from the hip.

It was The Invaders not the Defenders. Had to wave my nerd flag there for a moment .
And since The Human Torches body made a brief cameo in Capt America, I love the notion that they would follow along with the comics well enough to have the Human Torch's body and Coulson't brain patterns = The Vision!
Ofcourse it was Invaders.
All this Crusaders, Defenders and typing faster than a speeding bullet made a mistake.
And since Age of Ultron is going to be a movie, ofcourse we'll be seeing Vision also. And Coulson is mixed in that soup of synthetics too for sure. Paint Coulsons face red and guy even looks like Vision from the comicbooks.

From what I recall, the comics had Odin rez Coulson. This could explain a bit as well. If they go for that route. Time will tell, but the last episode was great for setting up something big.
If he is a LMD or Vision, I won't care either way. If he was rezzed by Odin/Loki (Lokin? Odie? :P) I won't care.
Devil and the deep blue sea behind me
Vanish in the air you'll never find me
And none of them is my personal favorite - that what Coulson remembers isn't Tahiti, but Valhalla, and he was returned to Midgard by Odin at the request of Fury. (Odin's reason for complying with the request, I can't imagine - I just like the idea...)

I'm still gonna stick with the Vision theory for now. Seems to make sense to me.
_on a side note.. Mar-Vell? weren't the Kree supposed to be blue-skinned? It's probably explained in a comic I never read, but I'm pretty sure they were blue.

Asgard is the very first thing that came to my head when he said "magical."

Well, off the top of my head: Odin felt responsible since it was his "adopted" son who killed Coulson.
And, yes, I think you and Biff have something since Midgard is indeed a "magical place."
And the word Tahiti could easily be his misremembering, or barely remembering, some part of his trip, a persons name or the name of the medical complex he was healed in, a tool used to heal him etc.

I don't think it was Odin only due to the fact that the Odin they have presented in the movies, doesn't come accrossed as someone who would care Coulsen died.
I hope he ends up as the vision, but I won't count on it.
I am betting on him being a LMD and at the end of the season we'll see the group find the real Coulsen in stasis in a SHIELD base somewhere.
I said before, whatever they end up giving us will most likely be a let down due to the show falling flat so far, course it is only my opinion, but the Whedon shows I have watch tend to have crappy 1st season, but great great in the 2nd season and beyond.
