So, I was looking at passives and a lot of the newer content. I was also reading about the new Fire and Ice alert and how every player's going to be 25 feet or more from the others. I looked at the UNTIL Sky Carrier mission, where people have to split up a lot and a healer is probably stuck babysitting the engines while the dps flies around handling the waves, popping up to heal the vent as needed. I looked at the Lemurian invasion where everyone's fighting in a MASSIVE arena.
I looked at all of that and finally came up with this idea - while in Hybrid role, support passives still grant their miniscule buffs to anyone within 50 feet. While in Support role though, they buff anyone within 100 feet, allowing the people masochistic enough to roll with AoPM, AoRP, or AoED in support role to buff people while they are responding to the many and varied insta-death fields being thrown around by event mechanics. Please include IDF in this as well. I hate trying to play a support char and seeing my role completely wasted because no one can afford to sit within 50 feet of me long enough for it to matter.
I understand the feeling. I have a DPS/healer with mostly 100' powers. But the 50' range on most support powers (passive, IDF, spec auras) means I have to get closer than I need to. Being within 50' of a boss/enemy group means you're next to the 50' attackers and within 50' from both the melee attackers and the 100' attackers. Not a bad arrangement since most powers (including healing) have a 50' range. Annoying if you run with 100' healing, but understandable.
The problem is, as you mentioned, when people are everywhere (Hi-Pan Custom Alert comes to mind). Suddenly, it's not a straight line anymore. If your group has the boss inside a pincer formation, where do you place yourself for maximum benefit? At best, you could stand next to the boss and cover everyone attacking within 50' or less. The 100' attackers would be out of luck, but you'd still be able to heal them if you have a 100' heal. But there may also the issue of your own survivability since you'd be in the middle of all the action.
Of course, it can be argued that you'll be running around responding to whatever needs responding to anyway. And if you're far away from your group, should they really benefit? There aren't any player PBAoE powers with a range greater than 50' other than Smoke Bomb and the Gravity Pulse vehicle weapon and those have their own issues. And likewise, it can be argued that if everyone else is constantly pushing forward, they might not need reinforcing. People low on HP tend to wait for their HP recovery (powers, items, out of combat regen... all the same) or for someone else to take point. Part of running support is figuring out who needs it the most. Another part is realizing that master-of-all-trades/self-sufficient builds are quite common and coupled with the game's general lack of difficulty, you might not need to do much support. It's pretty much the same gripe the crowd controllers have.
The everlasting adage of support characters, "If I can't see you, I can't help you", still holds true. Unless you're running exclusively click heals and bubbles, I'm sure you've had the "wonderful" experience of people getting out of range while you're trying to heal them. It's pretty much an extension of that.
It'd be nice to have 100' support auras (it might be overpowered though), but I understand the 50' range.
Note #1: I noticed that you omitted AoAC. That's what real masochists run with!
Note #2: This is probably better off in the Suggestions section of the forum, rather than the Combat and Powers section.
Grind for the Grind God! Tokens for the Token Throne!
Well, I left off AoAC because what it does is something few builds need or can take advantage of, especially at level 40. Also because I haven't used it a lot, admittedly. I was looking at a way to make rolling a support toon more useful. Look at the new Fire and Ice alert - one mess up and anyone within 25 feet of the target eats 80k unblockable. if everyone spreads out, as is sensible, I'm mostly useless if I have decided to roll a support passive. I don't really count Seraphim as a support passive, it feels too selfish, the group buff barely worth mentioning except as a means of acquiring heal aggro on mobs that aren't picked up by a tank or dps.
As for why here instead of Suggestions, that's twofold. One, I wanted people used to looking at powers to at least think about it, and two, the Suggestion forum is mostly where good ideas go to die and be buried under a flood of "make me OP" posts, IMHO.
While having the AoE buffs is nice when on a team, fact is a character should be able to survive on their own without being buffed or healed by other players, so if the others do get out of range of those buffs, they shouldn't have to rely on you to survive.
