Ok, I'd like to make a toon using, primarily, the Unarmed Powerset.

Problem is, I'm at a brick wall here as to what to make him, concept wise. I want to avoid using the classic Martial Arts Master/Karate character concept for this toon because... well, it's been way, way overdone for this powerset IMO.

So, I would appreciate any ideas y'all have, since I haven't got a clue here.

An average joe spiritually possessed by a MA master? Someone with godlike reflexes? I'm not any better concept-wise.

My unarmed character was an old black and white move heroine who somehow got brought to the real world through magical fire destroying her film reels. You could go with something similar, like a modern action movie star who learned martial arts to make his acting more authentic, then starting heroing to drum up publicity for his latest film. He found out it was a lot more fun than doing countless takes of fake fight scenes, so he stuck with it between movie shoots. Sort of like Sapphire; she's a superhero, but still does concerts.

You could also make a basic urban hero who uses good old fashioned punching and kicking to take care of criminals in his neighborhood. The Rising Knee power would be good for that. Knee to the crotch is a dirty fighting technique that would fit the concept.

Soldiers usually have some martial arts training as well, so you could make a PRIMUS/UNTIL agent who doesn't use guns. Could explain his lack of guns with some sort of latent ability that makes technology malfunction when he holds it.

Another possibility would be a magical artifact that boosts his natural abilities as long as he's wearing it. Heck, you could even make him a testosterone-laden wizard who shuns 'fancy theatrical spells' like runes, sigils, conjuring, and instead uses his magic to increase his muscle mass to godlike proportions. He uses this to punch demons so hard it opens a portal to hell and sends them home. It could be a nice reversal of the stereotype of the physically frail mage.

Or you could make a luchador. I don't think I've ever anyone make one with that costume set.

And I'm afraid that's all the ideas I can come up with on a whim. Hopefully this has sparked a few character ideas you can use.

Rising Knee. Thundering Kicks. Might Energy Builder. Dragon Uppercut. Grab a blast attack (I suggest gust)...You just made a street fighter :D

Average Joe was an 18 year old high school drop out, working construction as he supported putting his highschool sweetheart and now wife and mother to his child, through college, when they were mugged and left for dead on their way home from a night at Mickey D's.

Only Average Joe survived after two months in a coma with the memory of watching the terrible massacre of his wife and child.

Now he patrols the streets ready to dish out punishment upon those who would prey on the weak, using the MMA training he had begun as purely a fun activity, he's turned into so much more...he is the Back Alley Redeemer.

Take Open Palm Strike and its advantage.

The advantage on Burning Chi Fist gives you the closest thing to elemental melee attacks in the game (Shinryoku seems to have a permanent version of this). Your imagination can provide whatever reasoning behind the effect. Could be especially fun if you're doing a fist/punch specialist and mixing some punch attacks from Might.

On a scale of serious to silly, what kind of characters do you like to play?

You know, I don't know it's animation. Does it look like Gust's? Because Gust's makes me think of Ken and Ryu.

Tend to prefer serious toons, but I'm just looking for concepts. Besides, nothing says I can't do something fun with a silly toon!

While Gust may RESEMBLE a Hadouken. Open Palm strikes advantage IS an actual Hadouken.

    Some random musings...

    (Semi-)Serious Concepts:

    - A computer genius with a love for martial arts films, but lacking the physical prowess to perform the moves. He makes a mechanical exoskeleton and programs it to execute a handful of martial arts attacks. Now he lives his dream of being a kung fu crime fighter.

    - A wolf/bear/toad/whatever raised by a kung fu master (in the vein of Ninja Turtles or Kung Fu Panda).

    - A horror-themed demon or cyborg warrior (the Roin'esh hand pieces make it look like you're punching with creepy bladed weapons).

    - A pint-sized personal robot, marketed to wealthy families, designed to bodyguard their children in an increasingly dangerous world.

    Ridiculous Concepts:

    - A pencil pusher whose late-night-at-the-office coffee binge caused a superpowered caffeine buzz (a different take on the traditional "speedster"; I'd recommend One Hundred Hands and Superspeed).

    - A deer whose forest is being bulldozed to make way for a shopping mall. After an inspiring training montage, he vows revenge against the corporate fat-cats who destroyed his home. Hooves of justice!

A lot of the kick attacks have a dance-like rhythm to their animations, which opens up some amusing concepts. For example, one of my characters is a Special Forces ballerina. Other dance-themed concepts could be:

    - A male cheerleader who was bullied one too many times.

    - A disgruntled dance competition reject.

    <snip>

    Huh...

Y'know, that exoskeleton concept sounds fun. Although it technically violates the "no Karate/Martial Arts Master" theme I wanted, I don't think anyone's taken that approach to the concept.

Bonus points for the control system naturally all-but-requiring voice activation in the given setup, and therefore performs the classic "calling out your attacks" shtick that's seen in Martial Arts movies/Tournaments.

The thing is, the only reason why it would technically violate your desired theme is that he would require the exoskeleton to fight. Without it, even a mere mugger can make short work of him.

Oh, and by the way, for the chi effects from the attacks, it would be safe to say it's lighters turned on during the attack. If you feel like plugging in the shuriken? Could be darts launching from everywhere in the exo.

How about a sports theme? Say, a former football player who's developed a more formalized version of the maneuvers to ram into someone, grapple and throw them, strip the ball from their hands, block their forward movement, etc. Or a gymnast who adapts his leaps, tumbles and rolls for combat purposes.

The idea I had for unarmed was a character with the power to see a second or so into the future, allowing him to counter attacks and move out of the way of bullets etc. Didn't get as far as explaining the origin or theme though, but it seemed like a neat explanation for the stuff they'd be able to do.

Perhaps Captain Chronos just drops in and bestows this ability on the character. Why? Because Chronos calculates that giving this ability to this person at this time will have a positive impact on the future timeline he's trying to change. (That's been the Captain's rationale for doing weirder stuff than that.)

Not all origin/themes have to be complicated. Could be as simple as mutant born with the ability.

Could also go the route of super soldier/assassin/whatever project and that's what was developed.

Could even say it wasn't the projects goal or desired effect of the process and demeed a failure.
