3D Printing Champions Characters?

Has anyone tried to 3D print one of their Champions characters? I've heard that there are programs (Audodesk 123d?) that can stitch multiple images together to create a 3D model which can then be printed. Just wondering if this is even possible with the images we have in Champions. I.e. going into the green screen room in the power house and capturing multiple views/angles of a character and stitching them into a single model.

Not long before the CoH shutdown announcement, Arcanaville was just starting an experiment with capturing the commands being sent to the video card via DirectX (I think. I can't remember if that was what CoH used. Edit: Nope! It was OpenGL), and turning those into 3D models. As I recall, she had managed to get a really low-rez model and print a just barely recognizable model of one of her characters, and she was working on capturing cleaner images. The last time she posted in that thread, any form of production worth making wasn't possible; it was more proof of concept.

I'm not familiar with the stitching method you mention, but I imagine any output you got would need serious cleanup. Our camera controls don't let us position it with enough precision, and the characters never stop moving, even if it's just the breathing animation.

I'm not saying it would be impossible, but I imagine that even with the best tools, it would be a lot of work.

And then, after you had a good model, you'd need to cut it apart and add all the hinges and ball joints and other points of articulation.

Edit to add: Voodoogirl copied some of Arcana's posts to the Titan Networks forum. It looks like someone was able to use those instructions to capture a model and get it printed by a third party 3D printing company!

I have no idea how applicable the instructions ate to Champions, though.

Export images using demo record and a orbiting camera.
Feed those images into insight and make a 3D model.

Clean up in Blender or StudioMax or whatever you got.
Export to 3D printer (coming to your local office supply store).

This is the most comprehensive the forums have on potentially getting 3d printed models from Champions-Online.

I do think if Cryptic created an export process of character models for this purpose with a $10 transaction fee or something, it would be popular, innovative, and generate a lot of buzz. Get on it, Cryptic!

There are programs on the internet that allow the capture of a Direct3D scene, complete with shaders and textures.

Since CO uses textures that are being influenced by color choices, and some that overlay eachother, it can be difficult to remap the textures.

You can easily take the character model and print a blank which you may hand paint, however.

3D Lockbox, anyone? Just think... you could win a physical version of the lockbox and smash it open for free..
