Re-posting this here so it doesn't get lost as the CoT thread gets longer.

--

Hey all,

I need to step in here for a moment. Unfortunately, one of the rules that all the PWE forums work under is that we minimize/don't allow discussion of other games.

I've been wrestling for a bit with how to handle this one. Up until now, Project Phoenix / City of Titans has been a hypothetical game; now, through a year of work, the Titans folks have built something concrete enough to be called a game. Their hard work does them credit, it's very impressive to see it at the point of getting funded. The fact that City of Titans is a realized project, though, means I have to treat it as another game.

That being said, I don't want to shut down discussion on this, or discussion of CoX overall. But for the main page of the forums, it's important that the discussion be focused on Champions specifically. As such, I've made a new off-topic section, and moved this thread into it.

The new off-topic section is a sub-forum of General Discussion, so it'll be easy to reach. This section will be for discussion of things like City of Titans, but also anything that isn't really Champs-related. It can also be a good place for threads that've morphed into being more fun than on-topic -- I don't want to shut down conversations about food, but the General Discussion isn't really the place for that. An off-topic section is a good place for them to continue.

I think this'll work well for the boards as a whole, but I'd welcome feedback in PMs. Fly high, heroes.

Considering how lax the posting rules are, it probably wasn't deemed necessary. I always assumed the categories were just suggestions anyways.

The Comic-Culture section of the (old) CoH boards was one of the most popular, funny and intellectually-stimulating sections of the whole forum and although we discussed other things... even other superhero games or rival MMOs and videogames - the larger picture was that it pulled us closer as a community.

Thus I heartily applaud the creation of this forum section.

I remember around launch, there were a number of threads requesting an Off Topic subforum and we were shot down at every turn. "This forum is only for the discussion of Champions"...

No it's not, that thread was unreadable. Like many threads (all of them) where CoX was brought up, it pretty much had a refrain of "I'm only here because CoX shut down" and "this game is crap compared to the game I used to play". "Try this new one, it's going to be amazing". We're limping along, and some of us were here before we played CoX. Some of us never even played CoX. Lots of us (myself included) started here and alternated. And for those of us who love it...

If I woulda came on CoX's boards and kept advertising random other games, I would imagine the response would be the same. It's really frustrating to come on a board for a game I really enjoy, and have to keep reading what basically amounts to spam about games that will steal what few players we have.

Hell, I was one of the people that started an early CoX channel when the game was closing down. I nuked mine and consolidated it, with CoX channel, in the spirit of bringing the community together. Answered questions, and was really active on the CoX channel when people got established. I still am, when I'm on, because some seriously cool people lurk there. But seriously, the attitudes of some of the players when it comes to the base that was already here, the game we all enjoy, and the fact that people get *offended* when we ask them to stop posting about competitors? There's a flame war in every one of those, it happens way too frequently, and frankly it's tiresome.

None of this is befitting of the rep CoX had as a community. I dunno if it's because we got a bunch of the dregs along with the cool people, but screw any community that'd come to a new video game and just bash it constantly, after ours made every effort to make them feel welcome. And I'm not saying "Don't point out the warts and ask for fixes". However, if we're such a terrible game that people can't stop comparing us to a game that died nearly a year ago? If I honestly have to hear things like "CoX still gets more updates than this"? Go play dcuo, if that's how you feel. We can't really afford to lose players, but we can definitely afford to lose people with attitudes like that. And I'm not saying that's all CoX players, but you know who you are, and you're making the rest of them look *really* bad. If I didn't know enough of the community, play it a lot, and talk to so many of the cool members here? I'd honestly think the average CoX player were a selfish pretentious troll with a chip on their shoulder, that they'll now swing at every other game they come across, because nothing can compare to the precious.

I am sick of being told how inferior the game I decided to stick with *before* the close is to a game that's reached the end of its lifespan. That bit of good will is squandered. If you can honestly reread the last 5 or 6 pages (I got bored and lost the plot part of the way in, and had to backtrack, then got annoyed and gave up) of that thread and tell me it's not a flat out argument about how weak co is, and the constant tired comparisons to a dead video game, you're lying to me. That's the case with every one of those threads about the new plan Z that's catching momentum.

I swear, if we lose the OT forum because people think it's just a reason to spam the new CoX possible alternative, and troll or flame every thread after it inevitably closes down? I'm gonna be *pissed*.

You're free to take it up with Turtle. I know I'm not perfect, so if I messed up, he should handle it.

That thread was closed for a variety of reason. First and foremost, I didn't like the tone and attitude that it had come down to. To me, it did feel like they were being shills. Yes, the attitude was directed towards myself, so I can understand how someone would think I closed it it out of personal disagreement or to get the last word in. The truth is that I would have closed that thread if that attitude was directed to anyone. You'll probably note if you look at all the threads I close, that I don't just close threads where people are giving me attitude. If I had a history of that, then this would make sense. Hell, there was a thread recently in the bug forums where I was accused of trying to keep an exploit silent. I didn't just fire off a jab and close the thread.

Further, the thread had gone horribly off-topic. It was no longer just about the Kickstarter, it had become about how much better City did things than Champs. Not only is that off-topic, but it's also not good for the community. We hear that stuff all the time, and nobody that actually likes this game likes to hear it. Honestly, it's getting to the point that I think it's trolling.

Also, the reason that another thread exists is because I gave the author of it permission to do so. Normally you aren't allowed to start a topic of a similar closed thread. I gave my permission, saying they could talk about their game, but to stop with the attitude and stop putting down other games. We had a perfectly amicable conversation about it.

Truly a selfish thing to do, no?

But hey, you're all free to call them as you see them. Wouldn't be the first time and it won't be the last, I'm sure.

Really? Because I seem to recall only two conversations going on; One) the one about CoT's finances and whether it could or could not conceivably happen as a project, and Two) the tangential argument me and cybersoldier were having with lestylo about CO's lackluster writing.

I don't recall anyone saying those things you're accusing of anyone of saying, and if someone did they were an isolated poster that I don't recall anyone paying attention to.
I am sick of being told how inferior the game I decided to stick with *before* the close is to a game that's reached the end of its lifespan. That bit of good will is squandered. Well, I'm going to tell you truthfully that that's not what I saw. I saw the discussions I described above. The only thing that came close to CoH vs. CO was concerning the quality of writing, which I feel CO is unfortunately lacking and needs improvement in.

Heck, I could care less if CoT succeeds or fails. We'll cross that bridge and worry about it when we reach it. However, I did see a lot of baseless accusations from people claim that because CoT calls itself a "spiritual successor" of CoH that it was going to be a carbon copy of CoH, and that seemed to me where the "attitude" was coming from.

But go ahead and call me a "liar" if that comforts you.
You're free to take it up with Turtle. I know I'm not perfect, so if I messed up, he should handle it.

    I probably will.

That's exactly what it looked like. You were too involved to make a mod decision like that. When you get that involved, you should probably recuse yourself and let another mod look at it.
