Downloading the game and have a few questions.

1. How far can you get and how much access do you have to the game before you need to spend real life money. I'm not opposed to spending money, just would like to know where the game stands on free to play.

2. Is the game solo friendly ? Like to go off and do my own thing when grouping slows down.

3. Is there default gamepad/controller support ? Can you simply plug in a controller/gamepad and good to go ?

Thanks.

    1. All content is free. You can equip anything. There are no show-stopping cash shop items.

    2. Yes
    3. Yes.

    1. You get access to 100% of the game without spending any money. Some things you can get faster if you spend money, but otherwise everything can be acquired for free, though some stuff you will have to farm Questionite for.

The exception is changing the color of your powers, that only comes with a subscription.

    2. Yes, this is one of the most solo-friendly games I have ever played. I hate finding people to make groups, and this game never forces me to do that.

    3. Yes, I and many others use gamepad for this game, and there is plug-n-play support.

Um. 'fun' is subjective, but it's not actually that generous a f2p game.

Star Trek Online is way more generous, just off the top of my head.

The fact that freeform is restricted to subscription (along with coloring and emanation points) is a ... big limit.

Star Trek isnt as fun as Champions and not as generous if you dont have a $25 bucks sparkle ship your screwed. Also the zone in Trek is full of what I call "mentally impaired JJ haters". I am a silver player in CO and I can say that colouring and emanation points don't improve game play at all.

I have 4 AT toons and one FF toon and I also have to add I have had no trouble with soloing the content of the game with my AT's

My advice to new players. AT's that are good Grimore , Unleashed , Behemoth, The Mind.

Ones to avoid The Soldier and Inferno.

Technically, freeform slots are available in Z-store. I haven't checked the exchange rate lately, but if it's still hovering around 200 Q/Zen, buying a freeform slot without using cash would require farming [Dr. Evil voice] ONE MILLION QUESTIONITE!

    tumblr_mjufu7DCi21rwwihlo1_500.jpg

But yeah, Star Trek Online does a better job of making sure that features that come with a subscription are unlockable in Z-store for free players. I'm not sure if that's a feature gap in CO's ancient version of Cryptic Engine or just the usual "whenever somebody gets around to it after working a 60-hour week on STO and NW" product planning we get.

I recommend glacier or behemoth for new players since those AT's are tough from the get go. less repeated faceplanting. I keep seeing grimores and mind AT's dying over and over in starter zones.

I see free forms dying also. Poor players will die no matter the tools you give them and dieing in CO is something to be ashamed of games a cakewalk.

Also, please do take note that as a Silver Account player, you have a 250g limit.

I mention this due to some that don't realize this and get mad when any money (resources) they earn, are not given to them after the 250g mark.

Solution : Put it in a Super Group bank that you run. ( that only you control the money in, so others don't remove it) Or buy a Hideout and put your money in the account bank there.

Your toon can only hold a max of 250g on it's person.

In this game, you can not remove the g cap like you can in STO.

Not sure in Neverwinter allows it. I only played that one for 1 day. ('nuff for me to know it's not my thing)

    That's absolutely positively BS.

Purchased ships are generally different, not better (with the exception of Fleet ships, and even then the difference is tiny)

    "mentally impaired JJ haters".

JJ Abrams haters? I can sort of understand why Startrek fans pre-abrams movies might dislike them. Personally, I think they're pretty good but they're not very startreky compared to previous incarnations. Too action oriented with thin plots, they're really great sci-fi action adventure movies but they're not very good startrek movies in that they seem to miss the spirit of the Trek universe. They're very "hollywood" I guess. One big thing I noticed is the casting philosophy is really different. In the new Trek movies it's all bout getting young, hip attractive celebrities, where with the shows their casting pool seem to usually have a Theatre background, especially Shakespearean.

But anyway. That's another thread for another game. :P

There is a big difference seriously REALLY BIG DIFFERENCE in dps and defence. Your talking to an anal mentally impaired JJ hater here. I have to have the biggest Klink ship with all the best consoles. It cost me a pretty penny and I'm a freaking long time playing Trek lifer. I wouldn't recommend endgame to free players using default ships in Trek.

I smush max level froobs ships like they are bugs! Seriously I rip them asunder! I smite those muthers! Don't talk to me about froob ships.

Champions on the other hand I have taken out FF's with my Soldier AT. Smoke nades and Sniper rifles are a fantastic thing and I soloed the Endbringer with the same freaking toon. I dropped to silver when FTP came out and I haven't really noticed the difference gameplay wise.

Well, ok, if you're going to state outright that you have a blind hatred of all things Abrams and anal mentally impaired...

When I still did PvP, I did tolerably well with a patrol escort (free ship) against KDF. The bigger factor was whether it was pug vs. premade than anything else.

The vo'quv and vor'cha do quite well, although I'll grant you that red-side the drain console is... really hard not to get.

I am a new player just about to start playing this game, could you immediately start arguing with each other over every tiny little thing so I get a good idea of what I can expect from the player community?

    Thanks,

See people agreement can be achieved on the CO forums. But yeah when really looking at it both STO and CO are rather generous it all depends what your after in a game.

Its not an argument its a difference of opinion and thats always a good thing, if everyone agreed nothing would happen. Its also about choice also good. Both CO and STO are free so its all pure win.

Just two chaps poking a bit of fun at each other no rage involved.

OK, well, here's my take on it-

You'll probably want some costume parts. Save Questionite for that, maybe make a list of the ones you want and set a goal.

Other than that- not much else worth hurling money at.

My advice to new players. AT's that are good Grimore , Unleashed , Behemoth, The Mind.

Ones to avoid The Soldier and Inferno.

Huh? Mind and Grimoire are ones I'd recommend new players try to avoid.

I'd recommend based on how you prefer to play... for example:

Prefer being harder to kill and like to punch things with your fists?
    Behemoth.

Prefer being harder to kill and like ice attacks?
    Glacier.

Prefer being a ninja or samurai with deadly combo attacks with a single blade? Don't mind being a squishy melee DPS?
    Blade.

Like the whole jedi or sith thing? Don't mind being a squishy melee DPS? Want some PvP capability?
    Unleashed.

Like being a supportive healer? Ok with not having as much damage potential?
    Radiant.

Like archery attacks, don't mind being a bit squishier, like combos, and want some PvP capability?
    Archer.

Want a challenge, love fire attacks, know how to use hit & run ambush tactics, like playing on a team?
    Inferno.

Like gun attacks and hitting very hard, even if it means you're a glass canon?
    Soldier.

Mind and Impulse are the weakest two archetypes to play. They are slow to level, Impulse isn't as good for damage or survivability than others, and Mind is terrible for damage potential and is mostly useful for its AoRP (aura of radiant protection, on of the best support passives in the game).

Grimoire would be excellent, IF it just was in SUPPORT role instead of HYBRID!!!

Seriously Cryptic, wtf?! I've been saying this for years, and even more so since they nerfed AoPM's benefit to self (from where it was, this nerf happened right after On Alert thanks to excessive whining about AoPM+Imbue+{insert alpha strike power here} on these very forums... -_- Even after Imbue was changed, they never did put back AoPM like it was.). As a result, it's better for the Grimoire, especially with regards to it's healing and shared benefits, if it would just be in support role.

I still don't know why Grimoire isn't in Support role - most of the powers are useful for supporting other toons while they take care of doing the heavy damage. (There are some exceptions, but up until at least lvl 21 or so, which is about as far as I've ever taken a Grimoire before getting tired of it, it's mostly about support.)

This is the most solo friendly game I've ever played.
And I'm including Single Player Games in this:rolleyes:
As far as spending Real Life Cash you don't NEED to spend a dime on anything.
In fact, the only real must-haves in the C-Store are Costume Pieces and the Freeform Slots (or a Subscription). Because, make no mistake, it's all about Character Customisation with this Game. You can make anything from barley able to hold their own Toons to full out Superman levels of power, depending on personal preferences (at least with Freeform).

I started when CO was in beta, bought the lifetime sub and played. Decided to come back, and see (from post, game is downloading) that a lot has changed.... I am just wondering, what does my old life time sub give me now? Is there anything I need to buy? Is my old lifetime sub the same as PWE lifetime sub?

Well, you should have a mountain of Zen waiting for you in the form of your Monthly Stipend. This should be MORE than enough to get you just about everything that you could want in terms of Costumes and Powers that don't come with your Subscription. Don't forget to claim your Hideout. Vehicles are mostly useful as aids to Travel (they can be FAST) and as concepts. They are pricey, so I'd wait a bit before buying one. I would say AVOID buying Lockbox Keys, at least until you are up to speed on exactly what is/is not useful in game at what level. Club Caprice has a VIP lounge that has just about everything you need to manage your character all in one place. Very handy. You will have a HUGE number of Vet Rewards waiting as well, some of which are VERY cool. I won't spoil THAT surprise.
Welcome back and hope you enjoy your stay!

Also, take a look at the Stickies in this section called "Transitioning From CoH" and "So I'm Just Out Of The Tutorial". They can provide you with LOTS of good info.

TBH, when I was silver I found the Radiant to be the most solo-friendly AT. Not so much damage, sure, but having a self-heal is rare among ATs and extremely useful for a new player to the game.

I am a silver player in CO and I can say that colouring and emanation points don't improve game play at all.
I'm a silver-turned gold-turned back to silver player, and I can say that the one thing I would actually pay for is "the ability to color my powers and change their emanation points", even if it was a per-character purchase instead of account-wide. If you actually care about "I'm called the Blue Scarab, but all my powers aren't Blue" type things, then coloring matters. Some of the default power-color choices are garish, to put it mildly.
