Pets & Sorcery General Advice/Recommendations

Hi all, another CoX ex-pat here. I just started playing CO this past week, and I've been trying to get myself up to speed with all of the mechanics and whatnot. I've read a ton of guides, both general and specific to certain questions I had, but a lot of them are apparently out of date.

On to the specific question at hand:

I'm interested in rolling a character that blends Pets and Sorcery. I can certainly be talked into pulling from other sets as well. I love the customization options of Freeform, even though I'm still a bit overwhelmed by how all of the stats/mechanics interact. The main thing is keeping to my concept. In CoX, concept always drove my characters, but within that concept, I did my best to build effective toons.

I would really like to build a character around Attack Toys, Ritual of Arcane Summoning (for a Giant Robot buddy) or Primal Summoning/Command Animals (because dinosaurs), and one of the Auras for the passive (I think?). The idea here is "immature magician"--both in age and temperment--so pretty much anything could be handwaved into concept; that's the nice thing about magical characters (for instance, some of the force field type powers in the Force set look interesting, and Epidemic looks like a shoo-in for a Whoopee Cushion/Fart Gas power).

I'd like to focus on survivability, both for myself--since I've been having a spot of trouble with that on some of my other characters (again, I'm only on day 3 here)--and for my pets.

Any and all advice would be very welcome.

Oh, and hello!

Hi Moxie, i too played COX for just over 7 years. Going for a magic based character in CO opens up A LOT of options. But i do find it to be slightly limiting because there are so many powers you 'need' to take unlike in COX. Non the less CO still offers a lot of customisation.

For me i feel the key to a good 'Mastermind' build ;) is defence, defence, defence.

Take Tyr's Familiar and Arcane Golem R3. These are going to be your mainstay heavies, hitting hard, drawing threat, and generally not dying. Additionally, Tyr's familiar has a panic button if, for some reason, you need energy. You won't.

Get the radiant summon to R2 and take the advantage to remove it's circle. This allows you to have both it and Tyr's Familiar constantly active.

Lastly, pick up Pyromancer's Blades R3. That is going to be your mainstay damage, and it's going to do alot of damage. With Rapid Response from Commander tree, this thing fires in roughly .5 sec summon time. This is easy to throw out and it's damage is great, for no real drawbacks.

Pick a circle that suits you, depending on whether you want to fire damage or support your pets.

I would recommend Aura of Radiant Protection for your passive (support role) and either IDF or Compassion. Your pets simply will not die. Compassion ticks off of Radiant Summon's healing, to boot.

You'll run through most content with just Tyr and the Angel, with Pyro Blades cutting away at convenience. Arcane Golem comes out for Alerts, Cosmics, large fights in general, or if you just want to see that huge golem going bash bros with Tyr and wrecking **** everywhere.

If the agro management in this game wasn't so poorly coded (Your golem will CC something and it will often attack you personally, for instance), then these three could easily be thrown into a room and left to mop up while you go make a sandwich or something. On Elite. Pyro Blades is because you don't feel like waiting.

    ----

Alternatively, if you want to go more 'support' oriented, take the Arcane Golem to R2 with advantage and bring the Radiant Summon to R3. Take Sentinel as your second spec tree with Compassion.

Both of your AoE healing auras will stack, netting an easy 150Hp/sec to everyone. This is ontop of the Radiant Summon's own healing, which is pretty spammy.

    ---

If you want to go even worse, pick either of the two previous setups with Int as a secondary SS and stack reduction gear. Toss Illumination (with aoe advantage please), then Celestial Conduit whatever at random (it doesn't matter) - because it's not enough that your pets barely take damage, you want your pets in Gravitar and Pyro Blades just don't kill fast enough.

I should add that, in good old MM fashion, your pets will easily outlast you and your primary issue will be keeping yourself alive moreso than your pets because of bad design.

Don't forget, sigles also are pets. My Sorcery toon uses the commander skill tree to augment them. Because you are already going to use pets, sigles will be stronger.

Thank you very much for the replies, much obliged! There is definitely some food for thought there.

I think I'm going to keep a pet master type in my back pocket for now, as it doesn't seem to be particularly conducive to learning the ins and outs of the game.
