Game crashes in loading screen after choosing a character

Hello,
My brother just got this game and can't post so I'm posting on his behalf. He said that he can log in fine and created a character but when he clicks Play it goes to the loading screen then right as it's about to play it crashes completely to the desktop. When he logs back in his newly created character is still there but when he clicks play it goes to the loading screen then crashes again.
I'm sorry I don't have any of his specs since I'm at the office, but he's playing it on Windows 8 and all his graphics card drives are up-to-date and DirectX is version 11. I don't remember his specs off hand but I do know his computer is slightly stronger than mine and I run the game fine.
Any ideas what it might be?

There have been massive lag spike issues getting worse and worse for me all week. Not sure what to do....and unfortunately they hardly respond to any questions at all.
